Michael Steele on Perry’s Hunting Camp: “It’s Very Troubling”
TIME ^ | 10/3/11

Posted on 10/03/2011 12:00:27 PM PDT by roses of sharon

Even as Texas Governor Rick Perry downplays the story of a racist epithet painted on a rock outside a property that he co-leased, black Republicans are not giving him the benefit of the doubt. First came GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain, who said yesterday that Perry handled the episode in a “very insensitive” way.

And in an interview with TIME on Monday morning, former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele also scolded Perry. “It’s very troubling on some many levels, for so many reasons,” Steele said. Steele said questions over when and how clearly the rock had been painted over miss the point:

So I’m going to lease lease a property.....Do you paint over the rock? Or do you just remove the damn thing altogether? So, I’m sorry–my attitude is just remove the rock. That is the ultimate statement for me. Just get rid of the rock. Unless the thing is a damn boulder.

Steele stopped short, however, of impugning Perry personally. “I am not ascribing anything to anyone’s motives or decisions,” he said. He added, however, that he agrees with Cain’s criticism: “I think Herman Cain was right. It does lead one to feel that there was a level of insensitivity about how this would be perceived by the larger community. I’m not just talking about black folks, I’m talking about all folks. You would think that even in the 1980s that there would still be some sense of, ‘Do we really want this on our property? Even though we’re leasing it, still, do you really want that there? And just painting over it?”

At that, Steele, who believes the Republican Party needs to make amends with black voters for its “Southern Strategy,” simply sighed with exasperation.

I get it, but at some point OUR candidates and the former head of the RNC SHOULD GET IT TOO.

The Republican party have been enabling the MSM for over 30 years now, FGS!

How long can one remain in a political party that consistently runs us down, calls us racists, bigots, hobbits...and on and on.

I am sick of it.

Cain should be ashamed of himself. I am offended by his shallow political-correctness.

The Republican Party should be a 3rd party by now, their insults to the base should not be rewarded with votes.

If they are embarrassed by us, so be it.

Why keep voting for men who hate us????

No, you should be ashamed of yourself. Cain didn’t start this fight...he answered a question asked to him by Chris Wallace. He gave an HONEST answer. The fact that Perry is now circling the wagons instead of letting the story go is a bigger issue. If you want an honest candidate, then accept answers you don’t like. But, since you obviously like politicians who pander, back-slide, etc, then you are the one with issues...not Cain. The rock WAS insensitive...now tell me, did he have this rock displayed on his property or not?

You think that Cain and Steele would investigate better. Both are looking now like they shoot from the hip.
I wouldn’t blame Perry for restoring the boulder to its historical status at this point, saying that it’s like Huckleberry Finn, a work of a bygone day that reminds us of its commonplaces that are shocking now. Maybe put a little plaque on the rock commenting on it.

If the facts had been as Cain had believed, that wouldn’t have been wrong to criticize, any more than criticizing calling Italians spics and wops. Cain didn’t get the facts right and he unwittingly fed the sharpie Sharptons of the world.

As far as I know, Cain is not a slave and is responsible for the words that come out of his mouth.

I watched him use the word "insensitive" multiple times.

Any use of the word "insensitive" is political correctness.

Herman Cain should be ashamed. And you too.

My feelings exactly!! And Cain can take a hike - he has not done one thing FOR American but him$elf and $tockholders and he wants to lead this country. He must feel somehow he is entitled by throwing his hat in the ring.

Hey Cain - what’s going on in your mind - thinking about a beer submit in the WH and invite Perry? What about those loans your bro is giving out again - we can’t hear you.

That’s true, it’s not the “sensitivity” alley we want America to be going down, because that puts it hostage to any malcontent regardless of reason. “Niggerhead” isn’t “appropriate” today. “Nigger” always was a pejorative upon the objective word “Negro.” The reason that Mark Twain peppered his work so with the word was to rouse the disgust of his readers at large at a rightfully disgusting situation. People are creations of God, made by God in God’s image in a way that no animal is, and we indirectly slander God by tossing around inappropriate epithets about people, even evil people.

This incident happened in the 80’s when Perry was a democrat. It didn’t seem to be a problem back then. So when he was a dimrat, it was perfectly fine.

Now I'm not saying Steele is a race baiting moron, but for him to say this could easily be seen as an indicator that he is a race baitning moron.

Perry cleared it up last week.

"When asked last week, Perry said the word on the rock is an “offensive name that has no place in the modern world.”"

He gave written statements about what happened last week, too.

You're right - my mistake. I forgot all about the endangered beetle.

And then there's the issue of lead in the paint. Chances cannot be taken. The rock was probably originally painted BEFORE the EPA banned lead paint. The entire area must be treated as if it has been contaminated by large amounts of lead. A complete containment structure will need to be built around the rock, and ALL traces of paint removed from it using environmentally neutral methods.

One hundred percent recapture of all pf the paint removed will be required, with strict record-keeping and chains of custody maintained. Permits will be needed in order to transport the potentially toxic waste-paint over the highways to a hazardous waste landfill where a separate permit will be required to dispose of the materials.

Finally, extensive study of the endangered beetle will need to be performed to ensure that long-term exposure to the potential lead in the paint has not had any long-term detrimental health benefits on the poor defenseless insect.

It will be YEARS before anyone will be allowed to move that rock.

It was a hunting lease. lease/lÄ“s/Verb: Grant (property) on lease; let. Noun: A contract by which one party conveys land, property, services, etc., to another for a specified time, usually in return for a periodic payment. Kind of like renting land. It’s yours to hunt on for a fee. How big does a rock have to be to write 10 letters on it that you can see from your truck?
