Scandal: Friday's release of documents shows the extent of White House contact with the ATF over Operation Fast and Furious. Included is a map showing where the guns went in Mexico enough weapons for a Marine unit.
In a classic news-dampening maneuver, some, but not all, documents requested by congressional investigators looking at administration gun-running were released late Friday by the White House. Usually this is done to avoid the full impact of politically embarrassing or, in this case, potentially incriminating news.
As we noted in July, Special Agent in Charge William Newell, recently promoted to a cushy job with a tighter leash in Washington, D.C., admitted in testimony on Capitol Hill that he had been in contact with then-White House National Security Council staffer Kevin O'Reilly, who Newell said was a "good friend."
The document dump confirms this was more than casual chatting between friends and involved more than a simple single inquiry. O'Reilly at the time was national security director for North America and tasked with monitoring the activities of Mexican drug cartels.
Newell testified in July that O'Reilly had inquired about the status of the operation to brief administration officials before a trip to Mexico. Newell sent O'Reilly the requested information with the caveat, "You didn't get this from me."
As CBS News has reported, the email exchanges between Newell and O'Reilly lasted for more than a month. Among the documents produced is an email Newell sent O'Reilly with an "arrow chart reflecting the ultimate destination of firearms we intercepted and/or where the guns ended up."

I eagerly await hearing the hushed, serious tones of the ABCCBSNBC news anchors discussing this across the country tonight at 11 and a front page headline the NY Times tomorrow morning....
The couple of comments after this article are interesting, too.
Not to defend CBS, but they are only one from the LSM who have reported the scandal
There are 3 now
To be fair, I haven’t watched the evening news in a long time. My assumption that anything that would injure Obama’s re-election chances will not be reported is a reflex.
I can't wait for the nightly displays of the diagrams with the faces of the major players and the circles and arrows showing how they interacted with each other.
Oh, yeah. That was a Republican scandal.
Now that the shoe is on the other foot, we'll just have to content ourselves with "this so-called scandal is much too complicated to place before the general public. The tune-out factor would just be too much for our sponsors to deal with."
Sink the corrupt bastards.
Of course this goes all the way to obammy’s office. He had to have signed off on this, I should think.
Issa and Grassly need to appoint a special prosecutor—YESTERDAY!
I suspect the fact that CBS is reporting this is very significant. Has Big Media given up on Barry?
These released docs are a snowjob. They are about GUNRUNNER, not Fast and Spurious. GUNRUNNER was a legit op.
obammy’s excuse...I just have too much stuff to sign off on.
Ok all forgiven Ok, just too much stuff...
I waited to check if this wasnt one of the old GUNRUNNER speeches. It ISNT.
I think even that excuse is wearing thin with the public now—and of course this was explained to him before he signed off on it.
This was going to be his back door way to eliminate the 2A.
Fast and Furious ping
I was hoping this was about F&F/etc. when I saw that title but there are fifty other topics a “WH knew document dump” could have been about.
Well, it is an international scandal, so I'm sure Obama had his finger prints on the paperwork. Wonder why Mexico isn't screaming about this?. . . well some in their government are, but not the big guys. Sounds fishy to me.
Sorry, but Issa and Grassley can't appoint a special prosecutor. Congress doesn't have that authority.
That's up to the Attorney General's office, with the express approval of the President.
The best strategy for Issa and Grassley is to keep moving the investigation forward, continuing strategic leaks to the media, until a new president and a new AG take office in January, 2013.
Then, they can drop the dime on the whole corrupt venture.
Of course, Obama will probably pardon everybody on his way out the door...
Imp[each the incompetent SOB in the White House.
We can withstand a year and a half of the idiot Biden in charge.
