Lies, Damn Lies and Photoshop [image of Occupy Wall Street turnout faked]
TimParkinson.net ^ | 9/30/2011 | Tim Parkinson

A fellow skeptic (President of the Granite State Skeptics Travis Roy) recently posted a request on the Skeptoid mailing list regarding an image that has been making the rounds on Facebook. The image is an aerial shot of a supposedly huge turnout for the Occupy Wall St protest against corruption and greed. What appears to be thousands of protesters clog the streets of New York near the City Hall, with a caption stating:

Occupy Wall Street Turnout: My TV says nothing. The only thing I hear is its [sic] a small 100 person turn out. Turn off your TV. Ask your friends. Dont [sic] trust the media they lie!
After a request from Wettstein (and a warning from my hosting provider) I have removed his plagiarised propaganda image from my site. However the original can be found on Google Image Search.

My skeptical colleague saw this image and immediately smelled something fishy. Travis noticed that the image was an aerial photo of New York City Hall, whereas the protests were happening several blocks away at Liberty Square. He sent the image to the mailing list for other opinions. To my eyes the mass of protesters looked out of place, the crowd looked too uniform and dense to be real. I took the image into Photoshop to see if I could pick up any pattern to the image. My original thought was that they had used the clone tool to make a smaller group of people look much larger. Not being able to find anything obvious, I started to wonder where the background plate may have come from. Immediately Google Maps came to mind. I looked up the location featured in the image, and then I saw it: [...]

Don’t you understand how liberals think?

This represents VIRTUAL PROSESTORS, people who support them online, but can’t actually BE there!
(Seriously... This was the excuse on Daily Kos)

Kinda like Ron Paul Internet and straw poll supporters.

The most obvious comparison of all is the shadows! Both photos shadow angles and lenths are identical. In other words, same day, and precisely the same time. One photo is an intentional fake.

I was in Zucutti Plaza last week for three days, just watching the madness. There were never more than 200 or so people there at any one time, and streets around it were running normally.

I live in downtown L.A. and have been reading the the Occupy LA Facebook page. While some have been claiming 1000s in attendance, some others in the group have been saying to tell the truth - it has been no more than 200 tops. I’ve driven by their camp out twice in the past couple of days. No more than 10-15 tents and no more than 50 or so people out there (in prime time daylight hours).

Very good eyes! But, I wonder one thing. Why did the police say they arrested 700 protesters on the Brooklyn Bridge this past weekend if there were only a few hundred in the streets? Or, was that a different day?

wait till the weather gets really cold and these idiots pack up and go back to their Manhattan condo's worth a few million along with Rosanne Barr, Sarandon all staying in their heated mansions. These dopes have no clue I bet that wall street gave more money to zero. That wall street gives more to the left. They are asking in a sort of a way what the tea party is doing, stop bailing out companies let them fall. The radicals in the white house who are left overs from the 60's early 70's can't get it into their heads that times have changed, this is not Vietnam etc.

I can confirm that the picture of the supposed masses of protestors is a lie because I work down at that end of Manhattan and walk through that area every weekday. The protests amount to small roving bands of dropouts and nutjobs making occasional "marches" up and down the street, and that's about it.

This is yet another example of what I love most about the internet — the ability of ordinary citizens pooling their knowledge to uphold the truth. This is also an example of how the opposite will be attempted using the same media. This makes me more determined to prevent the government from controlling access to the ‘net.

Until Obama was elected, the same crowds showed up in DC every September to protest/party the IMF and World Bank. Whoever decided to get ‘communities organized’ this year has put the cap on any validity that this type of protest may have ever had. It is now officially a joke.

Their list of demands sounds like the Onion published it, or ‘brainwashed’ middle-schoolers dreamed it up.

If Organizers for Obama thought that getting civil unrest underway in many American cities was going to help his reelection, they had to have spent too much time with their street pharmacists.

Exactly, this is what the protest WOULD look like if the 99% could actually afford to attend. The evil corporate overlords are preventing the real turn out from happening.

Yup, their real agenda has to be finished by then. Wonder what it really is, they are very short on concrete goals other than punish the rich (except Pelosi).

They're trying to start their own communist TEA Party. They're not doing so well. All they've gotten so far is a few high school dropouts and a few losers who've escaped Hillarys village. Oh, and a few has been actors and a couple of communist organizers who think they can create a "new wave" with this group.
As long as the pizza is free, the scrounges will stick around. And, some one has to pay for all that pizza. (That's money that WON'T make to the Oboma campaign coffers. lol.)

there are a lot of rich college kids there and they have non idea that if wall street goes then so does their family’s 401K’s and other investments

They really are clowns, wall street is main street and wall street gave more to the left than the right and gave more to obama than anyone else in 2008.

This demo is more pathetic than the last one they did in DC LOL, Most have no clue why they’re there let alone understanding how wall street, 401k’s investments and companies who give jobs work.

I have to actually blame all of the on the dopey parents, either they never raised their kids or the public teachers did which again is the fault of the parents.

Bring on those nor easter storms please and wash the great unwahsed

Wall Street is where shares of corporations are bought and sold. This is like protesting the government by picketing the ballot box.
