Two East Texas coal power plants to be idled to meet emissions limits (EPA forces them closed)

Luminant, the Dallas-based electricity generator that has protested federal regulators' timetable to curtail emissions from its coal-fired plants, said Monday it will idle two of those facilities and stop mining Texas lignite at some locations by the end of the year, costing about 500 jobs.

Luminant said it took the actions to prepare to meet the Environmental Protection Agency's Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, which requires electricity generators in 27 states to cut emissions by Jan. 1, a deadline CEO David Campbell called "unrealistic."

The company said it will spend about $280 million through 2012 on emissions control equipment, but won't complete the projects in time to meet the deadline.

Also Monday, Luminant said it sued the EPA in federal appeals court, seeking to overturn the new rule. It said it will seek a stay of the rule's implementation "because of the immediate and irreparable harm that it will inflict."

Luminant is part of Energy Future Holdings, the former TXU Corp. It is the state's biggest power generator.

EPA spokeswoman Gina McCarthy said in a statement that the agency's rule "will prevent tens of thousands of premature deaths and thousands of asthma attacks by ensuring Americans do not have to breathe pollution emitted by facilities in other states."

In France, the vast majority of the people who died in that HEAT WAVE were the elderly. Without readily available air-conditioning, their cardiac and pulmonary systems could not cope with the stifling heat. Thousands were found dead ALONE in their apartments.
If you think the EPA would feel bad about that event, think again. A great way to reduce Medicare rolls. I’m not kidding.

Didn't Obama single out Rick Perry for being skeptical of AGW, and didn't FEMA, part of the regime, deny Texas disaster relief? Yeah, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet.

Yes, and Obama mocked TX, and joked about the wildfires here.

Rick Perry has said that Texans don't take too kindly with being messed with. I believe that. I will support him (unless Palin jumps in, then I'm not sure) because I think he is the one candidate who if he becomes President will be serious about getting rid of all these bogus regulations, support domestic energy policy, protect the 2nd amendment, and actually support prosecutions for those involved in the ATF ops of this current administration.

I worry that other candidates, not so affected as Texas has been by these things will just say, the old "reaching across the aisle" bs, and "let's set a new tone of civility."

Sorry, I want to see heads roll, people kicked to the curb, and payback.

Will those jobs lost be counted as SAVED or CREATED by Dear Leader’s apologists?

This is part of a deliberate attempt by the Obama administration destroy the United States and turn the greatest country in the history of human civilization into a backward, third world dictatorship.

They want to see Americans without jobs and without opportunity. They want to see us forced to beg some corrupt Democrat official for food, electricity, gas for our cars, heat for our homes and medical care when our children get sick.

Wake up America. This is planned. This is deliberate. The Democrats goal is to create enough human suffering and human misery that people will be afraid to stand up for themselves and gladly surrender all that our forefathers have sacrificed and died for.

EPA spokeswoman Gina McCarthy said in a statement that the agency's rule "will prevent tens of thousands of premature deaths and thousands of asthma attacks by ensuring Americans do not have to breathe pollution emitted by facilities in other states."

You omitted the elimination of asthma inhalers with freon/epinephrine that have been outlawed "because they damage the ozone layer". What remains is prescription only albuterol with "friendly" propellents at 4x the price. Many will die because they can't afford the more expensive inhalers after paying exorbitant power bills for ineffective "green" energy.

I know how you feel. Half my family (and hubby's) live in Texas and I want to see Perry nurse a huge chip on his shoulder against those (like Obama) who feel Texas' pain and like it.

I just spoke to a guy in my state senator’s office.

There is basically nothing he can do until 2013 when the legislature reconvenes.

All calls should go to ERCOT which is the comission apointed by the gov. Call them and put some serious pressure on them so they put presssure on the epa.

OK. What’s Perry going to do about this? Will he tell the EPA to shove it and kick them out of his state and let the SHTF?

Good questions!

What say you, FR Perry supporters??

#####

If he did, he would become the immediate Republican frontrunner.

Yep. Like Cain’s “abolish the EPA” answer in Florida.

Real Jobs Pay Taxes, Not Raise Taxes

That needs to be the Republican answer to the “jobs bill”

They’ve gone mad with power.

This summer, they ordered the temporary shutdown of a coal plant I worked at years ago. All because the cooling return water to the river was 1 degree higher than their arbitrary limit...

It was record heat/humidity at the time but the bastards still forced the shutdown until the cooling system was upgraded. The margins at these plants are very slim and sitting idle for so long wiped out almost two years of profits.

There was no rationality, arbitration or discussion. Pure totalitarianism all according to The One’s plan...

If Rick Perry had any b@$#s he just would not allow the plants to close and tell the EPA to butt out. Now that might get him some presidential creds.

I thought Obama rescinded that EPA regulation by Executive Order a few weeks ago.

And since when does the EPA care about asthamatic individuals since they eliminated the use of convenient and fast-acting over-the-counter inhalers, like Primatene Mist?
