CBS Poll: Most want taxes on millionaires increased
CBS News ^ | 10/04/2011 | Brian Montopoli

Posted on 10/04/2011 10:08:16 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto

Most Americans believe that taxes on millionaires should be increased in order to reduce the deficit, according to a new CBS News poll.

Sixty-four percent of Americans said they believe those making a million dollars or more in taxes should pay more. Thirty percent said taxes on such individuals should not be increased. Democrats were extremely likely to support such an increase (83 percent did so), and independents also supported it, 65 percent to 28 percent. On the other side, 54 percent of Republicans opposed such an increase, while 40 percent supported it.

President Obama has proposed a tax increase on those making a million dollars per year or more as part of his deficit reduction plan - the so-called "Buffett Rule" - an idea Republicans deride as "class warfare."

Republicans often argue that increasing taxes on the wealthy will impact job creation. But the new CBS News poll finds that just 18 percent of Americans agree. More - 25 percent - say the increase will actually help job creation. A slim majority - 51 percent - say it will have little impact.

Still, there are mixed signals: Asked the most effective way for the government to get the economy moving, nearly half (47 percent) chose cutting taxes to encourage investment. Fewer - 37 percent - preferred spending more money to create jobs. A majority of Republicans called for tax cuts while a majority of Democrats called for spending to create jobs.

Views of government:

Americans have a highly negative view of the role the government plays in their lives.

The Nazis sure could have used this tactic, couldn't they?

Oh, wait...

1) Robbing Peter to pay Paul has always been popular

2) Loaded push poll question. They’re asking about raising taxes to pay off the deficit. How about if they simply ask whether people favor raising taxes on millionaires without adding the deficit part? Or put another way, “do you support raising taxes on millionaires to support lavish pay and benefits to government union workers?”

This is kind of taking on the flavor of those moments in the Coliseum in Ancient Rome when the Emperor asked for a show of thumbs up or thumbs down on the gladiator laying in the dust under the point of the sword.

He shouts, “Raise taxes on the rich???,” and the crowd goes wild.

“Raise taxes on you???.” Thundering silence!

Got a friend that claims to be conservative. But he’ll vote for increased taxes for others. This is Oregon, so the loons are the majority. It apparently hasn’t dawned on him that he keeps voting for candidates that lose, but he usually ends up on the majority side of ballot initiatives.

This poll was conducted by telephone from September 28-October 2, 2011 among 1,012 adults nationwide.

What percentage of their income should a millionaire pay.

2) What is the current percentage millionaire's currently pay.

“64% of people think we should raise taxes on someone else.”

#####

And it is especially easy when that “someone else” is an evil “millionaire”.

Once upon a time, when the United States still vaguely resembled a meritocracy, people of accomplishment were actually admired and emulated.

Then came the hippies, the Norman Lears, the counterculture, the Howard Zinns, the ACLU, and good became bad, up became down, right became wrong, ad naueseum....

I propose a compromise.

Increase taxes on democrat millionaires!

Release their tax returns so we can verify they pay it, or turn them over to Roseanne Barr.

Deal?

and send them a thank you note for the 20 minutes of government spending their extra taxes will pay for.

Millionaires do not pay taxes on their accumulated wealth.

People on the way to becoming millionaires are taxed most ruthlessly on the income flow that goes to BUILD the million, but passive gains are not taxed, as equity once established, that is, clear title without mortgages, the growth in its imputed market value, and in fact, its power to earn return on investment, continue to build value and contribute to the millionaire’s net worth.

The net effect of TAXING millionaires, is to reduce their return on investment, not to diminish their accumulated wealth.

Republicans often argue that increasing taxes on the wealthy will impact job creation. But the new CBS News poll finds that just 18 percent of Americans agree

In a related story, 82% of Americans have no concept of basic economic principles.

I suppose this is good news, I'd have thought it would be a higher number.

I would add:

Why should a “millionaire” pay any more in ACTUAL DOLLARS to support the government than the less wealthy.

What has personal income or net worth got to do with one’s obligation to pay for government?

And, at the crux of what asymmetrical taxation actually is: “What right do you have to steal from another man because he has more than you do?”

This is the part of the poll that actually matters. Almost half asked in this CBS poll (which likely skews Democratic) think we should cut spending to get the economy moving. Only 37% believe more spending, which is what Hussein supports, is the right approach.

I’d love to see a polling outfit starting doing polls without the built in leftist premises.

“Should we increases taxes on the job creators even through Washington DC will use the money to expand the bureaucracy”

“Would you like to see millionaires who already pay 70% of the taxes taxed more even though unemployment will go up another 1-3%.”

“Should the rich, who already pay nearly all the taxes shoulder the burden while 50% pay zero into the system.”

Sixty-four percent of Americans said they believe those making a million dollars or more in taxes should pay more.

First I don't trust CBS to do accurate polls.
Second, how many of those troglodytes understand that increasing taxes on the rich won't reduce the decifit?
And last, how many of these troglodytes know that the top 1% already pay roughly 40% of the Federal Tax.

Conduct a poll on people who already know these things and you will get a very different result. The average smuck out there simply doesn't appreciate how much taxes the rich already. They have been misinformed by the MSM.

If you TAKE money from a millionaire and GIVE to a poor guy for nothing, the millionaire will eventually run out of money.
What if the millionaires could HIRE poor people so they could WORK and EARN money instead.
The result of that work could be SOLD for more money and the process could continue, or even grow.

Oh, a system like that already exists you say? Or at least used to?
Who would have thought!

Much of what the government spends money on does more harm than good; this is particularly true over the past several years with the massive uncontrolled increase in government spending. I believe my business and non-profit investments are much more beneficial to societal well-being than sending more money to Washington.

RE: If you TAKE money from a millionaire and GIVE to a poor guy for nothing, the millionaire will eventually run out of money.

I don’t think these people want to bankrupt the millionaires by confiscating their wealth. They want them to pay their “fair share” ( whatever that means to them ).

To most of them, that means INCREASING THEIR MARGINAL TAX RATES.

That it will do zip for the economy or the deficit is beside the point.

Why the half measures?

While we’re at it, we should enact laws that provide for the scarification of the beautiful, and the amputation of the limbs of the athletic.

This really should be followed by lobotomies for everyone with a higher than average IQ and/or advanced degrees.

And, for goodness’ sake, why is it that you feel you have the right to own a car that goes faster than mine!

Should women with a refined fashion sense be allowed to wear more beautiful outfits than other women?

No, of course not!

And why is it that the government sits idly by and allows those with a gift for the use of the language to become successful writers???

That is clearly unfair!

The government I’m looking for would not only rob the rich, it would, in fact, see to it that everyone in America is just as stupid as I am; just as ugly as I am; just as spastic as I am; just as untalented as I am.

It’s the only way to be fair.

My point is taking money out of the economy to put back into the economy does nothing good for the economy.
If instead money is used to pay people for real work (as opposed to gov't make-work programs or outright handouts) then something of value is created.
THAT is good for the economy.
Economy is more than moving money around. It has a purpose. Leftists don't get that.

Actually, there are already excise taxes on property (in Massachusetts, registered cars) as well as property taxes. One argument against capital “gains” taxes is that they are largely taxes on inflation. If I own a candy store which I purchased for $50,000 in 1970 and sell it for $1,050,000 in Januart 2011, guess what? I “made” a million dollars in “capital gains” even though the $50,000 in 1970 could buy over 1400 ounces of gold, while the $1,050,000 in 2011 would only buy about 750 ounces of the yellow metal. In other words, the value of my asset relative to gold was half as much, but I would wind up forking over a big share of it to the government as “capital gains”.
