Jimmy Carter asks for cash to wipe out guinea worm

LONDON (AP) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is appealing for other donors to join Britain in a multi-million dollar campaign to wipe out guinea worm, a crippling and painful parasitic disease that now exists only in four African countries.

At a press briefing in London on Wednesday, British officials are expected to pledge 20 million pounds (US$31 million) over four years to the cause - but only if other donors also open their wallets.

The global campaign to eradicate guinea worm started in 1980, when there were about 3.5 million cases of the disease, also known as dracunculiasis, every year across Africa and Asia.

Since then, cases have dropped by more than 99 percent, but the disease remains a problem in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Mali and Chad. Last year, there were 1,797 cases.

Hard to say what is more ghoulish, Jimmah's legacy about to improve because of Obama, or a worm coming out of your foot.

How much have they raised to wipe out slavery?

Leftwing Wiki seems to indicate there are at least 600,000 in “forced labor”. Many of them children sold into sex slavery.

Cool. Really, if the left wants to make the world a better place, they can start by staying out of politics.

I'm all for Jimmuh concentrating on killing these worms. It will keep him busy and out of trouble.

Maybe we can export the worm to Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Libya, Afgahnistan and Palestine. That should do it.

Jimuh Carter should contact Big Al Gore and have Big Al declare that the increase in worms is caused by global warming. Then have Big Al contact his rich global warming lackeys and have them donate billions of their excess money to the cause.

Call Michael Moore to make a movie of the deliberate extinction of this innocent worm.

BTW, Buffet, Soros and many of the hollywood stars can easily chip in some Millions to fund the extinction and the film.

Wear shoes and don’t drink dirty water. Then you won’t have to worry about the guinea worm.

I think this sounds like a worthy and honorable cause. Eradicating third world disease is one of the great humanitarian efforts (as long as the money goes to the cause, and not the graft).

As long as Jimmuh doesn’t hunt at the former “Guinea-head Ranch.”

But it’s way better then “free houses for deadbeats, built by guilt-ridden whites.”

I totally agree - let's send every dollar we don't have to borrow! Oh ... wait ... :(

So... he waits until the disease is almost eradicated, and THEN decides to pitch in and help?

Where was he when it was at pandemic proportions? Wouldn’t we all have been better off if he’d stayed in Africa that whole time, maybe helping victims to remove those worms?

Guinea worm treatment involves pulling the worm out a centimeter or two at a time and wrapping it around a stick. The pulling stretches the worm, making it uncomfortable, so it is forced to crawl out of the wound just a little bit each day. If pulled too fast, it breaks and causes a fatal infection. That slow, yet grotesque, process of guinea worm removal would have been a great use of Carter’s talents.
