Starbucks Corp. Chief Executive Howard Schultz, who has been on a mission to cut the national debt and boost job creation, has pledged to donate at least $100,000 of profits annually from two Starbucks stores in low-income areas to boost jobs in those communities.
Profits from Starbucks stores in the Harlem section of Manhattan and the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles will go toward two community organizations that work to improve education and job training for young adults in those areas. High-school students in those neighborhoods also will receive barista training at the Starbucks shops.
"We can't wait for Washington. Business leaders have to step up and do our part," Mr. Schultz said in an interview.
Mr. Schultz, whose political giving skews heavily Democratic, recently got more than 100 business leaders to join him in a pledge to withhold campaign contributions to Washington incumbents until Congress strikes a long-term debt deal.
He also called on fellow business leaders to accelerate employment.
Starbucks on Monday said it is teaming up with Opportunity Finance Network, a group of community development financial institutions, to launch a program called "Create Jobs for USA." Donations from Starbucks customers, employees and others will be pooled into a nationwide fund for community business lending.
Starbucks isn't alone in its quest. The traditional method of corporate giving, in which companies write checks to charities, is being replaced by efforts to work directly with communities and other constituents. According to a recent report from the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, a CEO-membership organization dedicated to increasing the level of corporate giving, conducted with consulting firm McKinsey & Co., there are long-term financial benefits to strengthening communities in which companies do business. How is this money accounted? Loans usually are expected to be paid back. Who is making the money on these loans - certainly not the people donating the money.

Although I am glad any successful businessman is willing to donate money for job-creation efforts, isn't it interesting that this liberal doesn't push for lower taxes and cuts in federal waste, too? Wouldn't that create jobs? Not on his planet.
