Occupy New Orleans' march to begin at noon today

A group of protesters calling themselves "Occupy New Orleans" will march across the city today before setting up an "encampment" at Duncan Plaza across from City Hall where some say they plan to live for months. Inspired by the "Occupy Wall Street" protests, which began in New York City three weeks ago and have since spread to at least 80 other cities, the group is demonstrating against what it sees as the disproportionate power wielded by corporations and the rich.

"I feel that corporate money in politics has completely removed the voice of the people," said David Ludman, 32, who plans to participate in the protest today. "This is the first step at moving towards dealing with that problem."

The march will begin at noon at Tulane Avenue and Broad Street and end at Lafayette Square, outside the Federal Reserve Bank of New Orleans. The locations were chosen "to highlight the continuing crisis of the prison industrial complex" and the "corrupt financial institutions that have caused so many to suffer," according to a statement released Tuesday by the group.

Taking its cues from the New York protest, Occupy New Orleans makes all its decisions through "general assembly," a series of votes that aims to reflect the views of everyone involved. The process can be lengthy -- simply selecting the march's route took three hours for the group of about 100 to decide.

That's one reason the group has not made a list of concrete goals, though it intends to in the upcoming weeks, said participant Michael Martin, 25. The movement also has no leader or spokesperson -- each member is allowed one vote. The resultant lack of a coherent message has drawn skepticism even from would-be sympathizers.

Organizers of the New Orleans protest say they expect hundreds to participate; the group

Then tell him to take the Brown Acid and roll around in the mud for three days. Then tell him that the investors in Woodstock lost everything because “UNDOCUMENTED” revelers broke through the fence. That way he’ll feel like he accomplished something.

New Orleans isn’t the mecca of industry it once was. Let’s see what’s been lost (most during the obama regime)...
Oil companies - gone.
International shipping - gone.
Ship construction - gone.
NASA - gone.
Fishing industry - gone.
Petro services - gone.
Tourism industry - on life support.
Healthcare - struggling.
Welfare - vibrant and growing.

My sister lived on St. Marten for 25 years. Go ahead. Try something like this and be “Undocumented”. See what happens.

Just how are these people going to eat? Does the city have to provide portapotties?

Probably not much of a consideration - this is just a march, not an "occupation". And although I'm sure that Mitch Landrieu is sympathetic towards this crowd, he's also smart enough to know that he can't allow it to spin out of control.

The key thing to remember about these people is that they are “UNORGANIZED”.

If you remember anythign at all about them, make sure it’s that, because afterall, our president is a communist community organizer, but these people are “UNORGANIZED”.

Got it?!

“Just how are these people going to eat?”

Pprobably very well, considering it’s New Orleans.

“Does the city have to provide portapotties?”

Why not? And set up a stage and bring in a few bands.

They will probably do what former persident Bill Clinton did when in college, he lived in a tree on campus while protesting he Vietnam War.

From another Freeper in 2010:

"I read stories from people who were in Little Rock when Bill Clinton took a mattress up into a tree and stayed up there protesting the Vietnam War. The Fire Dept would “wash him and the mattress” about every week when passers by told them the odor was unbearable. All the newspapers and articles and photos from the Campus and town Library were removed so that there’d be no paper trail. But some of the people in Little Rock recall the incident vividly."

FYI: I can't find anthing about this on Google even though it was common back when Clinton was running for president and there was a scan of a newpaper article. Down the Orwellian memory hole.

That is almost word for word what I told my husband to tell this kid. Well, not about the Woodstock guys losing money, but about the brown acid and the mud

I also asked if a) the kid planned on driving his car to the event, and b)did he make the clothes he was planning on wearing, cause if he did, he was just going to be a hypocrite

Occupy wherever!
These protesters Occupy what! Daddy’s credit card!
Do they not realize by cutting class and spending money to get to the protest!
they have given the universities and professors a day off on their ticket!
This is ludricious!
Young people should realize they are lucky enough to chase their dreams!
Dad, was the one through capitalism to have enough cash to put them in college
and now have demands because they have wasted their lives!
To have these demands only shows what America can become!
A useless population of no nothing people that have no aspirations in life!

A give me Nation of a populas that wants others to give them a life!
They have already charged a mega amount to get where they are!
They don’t want repairiations for their benefactors but they themselves!
This Nation was not built on Self regard but ones who give!
Would you like these youths to be the one to carry the banner for freedom when this Country
was founded!
The American Soldier gives without regard!
These 20 year olds only want to take!
They all could be in Fatigues fighting in a war!
Occupy Afghaninstan you worthless epitimie of Americana!
Occupy your lives make a difference by being an American and taking what was given you and become a valuable person in your community!
Instead of Whining and making a spectacle of an American youth that cannot handle the one premise your parents and forefathers were able to overcome by hard work and an ethic that was beneficial to not only you, but your Country as well!
