MSNBC's O'Donnell Accuses Herman Cain -- Who Worked for the Navy -- of Being a Draft Dodger

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain and MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell had quite a heated battle on Thursday's "The Last Word."

During one segment, after O'Donnell besmirched his guest for not enlisting for military service during the Vietnam War despite having worked for the Department of Navy as a ballistics analyst, Cain marvelously asked, "Do you stay up night to come up with the wording in these questions or do you have someone writing them for you?"

The Anti-War left bash anybody who wasn’t in combat as being cowards. It’s tiring considering most military personnel AREN’T in combat!

Anybody who thinks that the logistics and support personnel are “draft dodgers” insults millions of patriots.

It’s also hypocritical when they then run Vets as Anti-War candidates, and it turns out they weren’t in combat despite their posturing (like Pat Murphy from PA).

Gee, a Republican appears on a show on MSNBC and gets ambushed by dishonest, unfair questions.

What a freaking surprise. I never would have guessed this would happen in a million years.

If Republicans choose go on these shows, they they should expect to be ambushed and attacked. The truth doesn’t matter. That’s just how it is.

It’s so nice to see Lawrence O’Donnell speaking on behalf of the Vietnam Vets to the “offense” of Herman Cain working for the Navy and not being selected for draft.

1 - How does this moron speak for anybody who served, even John Kerry, who, in fact I have heard, is a Vietnam Vet?

2 - Is not working for the Navy in the role Cain did doing his duty as well?

3 - Why does military service matter to media types when it can be twisted to present Repub’s in a dim light?

Is it because there is a dim bulb attempting to shine a light?

I think that coming of age in a time when blacks were considered sub-human, Herman Cain is used to working with & rising above those who wish to hold him down. He also knows in order to get blacks to hear him, he has to go where the majority are listening. He's either really naive or really smart. Say what you will. The man is working very hard to be seen & heard right now.

You are right - Cain doesn’t fit the profile the hyporite, lunitic left have made for them - Cain is not in lock step and it makes them crazy and fearful some black folk may stop listening to massah and want off the plantation. Maybe they will finally find out that it was the Democrats who kept them on the plantation for so long.

“It’s tiring considering most military personnel AREN’T in combat!”

I often wonder how people don’t get this, especially considering the logistical complexity of modern warfare. How do you organize things from 2,000 miles away if everyone’s in the bush throwing bullets and mortars at eachother, or whatever it is grunts do? With ten to one people in the rear with the gear, that’s how. (For the record, I made that statistic up, but it sounds right.)

The veterans who did not wait to be drafted like John Kerry who joined. They didn't sit there and wait to find out what their draft board was going to do. They had the courage to join and to go and fight that war. What prevented you from joining, and what gives you the feeling that after having made that choice you should be the Commander in Chief?

What BS

Kerry admitted in his book he tried to get a deferment so he could study in France and was turned down

Knowing he would be drafted into the army and be sent to Vietnam he figured he was safe if he joined the Navy ---They are his words in his book

These would have been Mr Cain’s Selective Service Classifications in 1971:
2-A Registrant deferred because of civilian occupation (non-agricultural).
2-B Registrant deferred because of occupation in a war industry: (Defense contractor or reserved occupation).

It became a mark of honor to evade the draft. Many went to Canada, where they were allowed to stay. Then Carter gave them all amnesty.

Had Cain been a grunt or, worse, an officer, during VN (or any war/military action), he would be smeared with *baby killer* and held out to be totally responsible for *war crimes*. Just look at how they tried to smear Col. Alan West.

Not a leftist? You can’t win.

I like Cain, but he is using bad judgement or getting bad advice by appearing on shows and networks hosted and infested with hyper partisan liberals.

O’Donnell quote:

“I think Bill Clinton and Bob Dole—— Once they became politicians, they were guided by the exactly the same thing. Which was, whatever it takes, to be re-elected, or elected to the next step up. Their lives, prior to running for office, were really strikingly different and defined largely in fact by their relationship to the central societal question of the day for their age cohort which was what are you going to do in this war? Bob Dole went. Suffered because of it. Had to fight his way back physically. Bill Clinton evaded the draft, much as many of my best friends did. And did something completely different, unthinkable to Bob Dole.

Bill Clinton’s position was more complex. Bill Clinton’s position was ultimately was part of what got us to pull out of that war. Dole’s position was very simple, very clear, very principled, unconfused, but ultimately, with these two totally different approaches, to what seems like a question of duty and a question of morality, they each approached it completely differently. Once they became politicians, they both started to behave in very very very similar ways. Going for the expedient route wherever they could find it.”

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/choice/bill/odonnell1.html

I guess Cain is just ‘complex’...which means ‘smart’ when applied to a democrat.

He did get Cain to back track on his comments that the unemployed were that way because it was their own fault, which was a dumb remark to begin with. But Cain did hand O'Donnell his head when he was attacked on his time during the Civil Rights era and the Vietnam war. And O'Donnell spent so much time on that trivia he didn't have anything left to nail Cain down on 9-9-9 plan specifics. All in all, it was a Cain win.

Yeah, we saw the same idiocy in the GWB Air National Guard controversy.

I have not run the numbers but I would hypothesize that the death rate in crashes among non-deployed Air Guard pilots during the Vietnam War was as high or higher than the death rate of EVERYONE deployed to Vietnam (most of whom were REMFs in Saigon, not wandering the jungle.)
