.. Labor Dept. announced proposal that would help ensure the safety of youth on farms. But,...as farm advocates claim (they) are far too restrictive.
Heres what the government thinks is common sense, says Craig Anderson, Agriculture Labor and Safety Services division manager at the Michigan Farm Bureau. Eliminate work to protect workers. If you dont work, you cant be hurt on the job. Who can argue with that?
The DOL assumes that youth under age 16 lack the cognitive ability to herd animals on horseback, use battery-powered drills, put hay bales on a bale elevator or use any equipment except if powered by hand or foot.
The grandparents own the land, their children are buying into the farm and may have some land on their own, and the grandchildren are working to understand what it takes to be a farmer. If the parents and grandparents operate the farm, the grandchildren under 16 would be prohibited from working on the operation."
"Don't let the spin fool you," Anderson says. "They'll say there's nothing for farm families to worry about because there is an exemption for children working on their parents' farm. The DOL proposal says it will maintain the family exemption, but later limits the exemption for any business or multi-generation farm."
The document would seem to eliminate working with 4-H and FFA animals, or proper care and well-being of animals. DOL says youth would be prohibited from engaging, or assisting in treating sick or injured animals.
Youth also would not be allowed, under the proposal, to cut and separate cattle from a herd if riding a horse. Such restrictions and inconsistencies are why Anderson and other Michigan Farm Bureau officials are pleading with farmers to submit comments to the DOL before Nov. 1.

I had to excerpt much more than I wanted to, the entire piece is well worth a read.
Today’s bit of further evidence that this gubment must be destroyed.
These idiots need to understand that life is dangerous, whether you are 6 or 60. If they get away with this they will kill the family farm. Maybe that is their goal.
This is part of a planned attack (my opinion only) on small farms.
A large agra-business managing thousands of acres can afford to hire help and pay benefits for same. Not so for a family farm.
This is no differant than the new requirements from the NTSB stating all farm vehicle operators will be required to obtain CDL’s.
BTW; If a farm does not sell or transport any product across state lines, where does any federal group have the authority to come on the farm ?
I own a farm. I will have milk cows next year, probably in February, one month after the arrival of my SON.
He will be working the farm with his daddy as soon as he is big enough to move safely among the large animals.
We are going to start him in 4-H as young as possible starting with small animals and working his way up to cattle.
Fedzilla can stuff it.
Obama seems to be targeting every possible group in the USA to alienate.
I grew up on a farm/ranch where it was expected the kids would be driving tractors by age 8 and big trucks by age 10.
I learned that work would not kill a person by doing those tasks.
Obama wants to make kids afraid of work so he can distribute wealth to these future non-performers.
From what I understand, there are far fewer injuries to kids on farms than there are injuries from kids on their skate boards or bikes.
Leave the farmers alone.
The Lord bless and keep you, and preserve you from EPA regulations, taxation, and all other enemies to the well-being of you and your family.
My brother is a dairy farmer, and the EPA and somatic-cell requirements right now - together with a brand new $3 million (before interest) school that will have about 40 students in it in about 10 years - are likely as not to put him and the other small farmers in his area out of business. It’s tough to be a little guy in a world where the people with big money can do whatever they want to little guys.
I will have the advantage that I am not looking to make a living at it. It is more a labor of love. Yes I will be selling dairy products and eggs up and down our valley here but I think that if I am lucky we’ll just make enough to break even.
I also am a prepper, and I see having a fully functioning and self sufficient farm as being a necessity in the not-too-distant future.
Maybe with 9.1% unemployment, the DOL could restrict workers to AMERICAN CITIZENS?!?!?!??!

For crying out loud, I started working around farms when I was 11 years old. While I was never a farmer, I liked it and my parents wanted all 6 of us to learn work ethics and the value of hard work. I wanted to earn a little cash. We were dirt poor and we needed the extra cash. We NEVER took government handouts.
Heck, my brother and I used to buck hay... we would set the hook under the back bumper of the truck and the driver would drag us across the fields to the next group of bales. I would get a hay rash and beat up a bit, but it was fun and guess what—I am still alive!!
I had my son and daughter out doing the same kind of things when they were young.... I wasn’t poor, but I wanted them to learn the same things and to stay busy.
My kids didn’t get into trouble with the law, (I was a cop, I would have killed them—or so they thought. LOL) and they were never dopers.... they were kept too busy to get involved in that garbage.

Obama’s goons see Teamsters driving every tractor in this country. Remember how dismissive he was of that farmer who asked him about burdensome regulations being developed?
The goal of a communist state is that you can get NOTHING that doesn’t come from the communist party.
This is why he is targeting for destruction any demographic that has any lick of self-sufficiency.
The left has been trying to destroy “the gun culture” for quite a while now, making it harder for a father to pass on his ability to use firearms to his offspring.
I smell big ag constituents and social weirdos against small farmers again.
