Rick Perry Touts Pro-Life Record at Values Voter Summit

by Steven Ertelt | LifeNews.com | 10/7/11 5:26 PM

Rick Perry, the Republican Texas governor seeking the GOP nomination to take on pro-abortion President Barack Obama, touted his pro-life accomplishments during a speech to a crowded house at the Values Voter Summit event.

“You know, there are millions of Americans that are born into less than ideal circumstances. Maybe they were born into poverty, born without a parent. But as a society, we must stand for the principle that every life – every life – is worth living, regardless of the circumstance,” he said. “In America in America it’s not where you come from that matters, but where you’re going. As Americans, we must affirm the value of life, not just in our Declaration of Independence, but in the way that we live.”

“For some candidates, pro-life is an election-year slogan to follow the prevailing political winds. To me it’s about the absolute principle that every human being is entitled to life. All human life – all human life – is made in the image of our creator,” he said. “And every innocent life must be protected, from the most frail, who are elderly, to the most vulnerable, who are unborn.”

“That’s why as governor I have consistently worked for pro-life legislation, policies such as parental consent for minors seeking an abortion, a ban on third tri-semester (sic) abortions, an informed consent law,” Perry added.

During his speech, Perry referenced his signing of a bill to revoke the taxpayer funding for the Planned Parenthood abortion business in his home state of Texas.

“I’m proud to fight for and was proud to sign a budget that defunded Planned Parenthood in Texas,” Perry said. “Our obligation is not only to protect life and bestow freedom on future generations, but it’s also to instill character.”

Perry has received an A grade from the two leading pro-life groups in Texas.

“Governor Rick Perry has always championed the pro-life cause, tirelessly advocating for the sanctity of innocent human life in numerous ways,” Texas Right to Life executive director Elizabeth Graham tells LifeNews.com.

“Governor Perry has worked alongside Texas Right to Life, helping shepherd our pro-life bills and eagerly supporting our measures,” Graham said. “As governor of Texas, he has intervened to stop anti-life legislation on a number of occasions, and he has helped clear obstacles when necessary.”

For the pro-life movement, changing the makeup of the Supreme Court is perhaps the number one issue — as the current pro-abortion majority on the high court makes it impossible to overturn Roe v. Wade and allow for either federal or state efforts to provide legal protection for women and unborn children. Graham says her organization has been appreciative of the nominations Perry has made as governor.

“Every one of Governor Perry’s judicial appointees adheres to a strict constructionist style of jurisprudence; neither do they find a right to privacy in the penumbra of the Constitution, nor do they legislate from the bench,” Graham assures. “Governor Perry’s appointments have created the largest, most conservative judicial body in America.”

Joe Pojman, the head of Texas Alliance for Life, has also worked closely with the governor and confirms to LifeNews that “Perry has always been pro-life throughout his time as an elected official.”

“For many years, Perry has supported the fund raising efforts of pro-life organizations, including Texas Alliance for Life, and he has appeared several times at the Texas Rally for Life held at the state Capitol to commemorate the tragic Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision,” Pojman added.”We believe Perry has the right stuff to be president. If elected, he will aggressively defend innocent human life as he has as governor of Texas.”

Read where he is NOT burning through his millions either. Very low key, holding the cash together, as opposed to what Romney has burned through. Their strategy is retail politics to groups. Rick is very good on the stump, but sure needs to consider adding a few sharks to his campaign to shake things up there, among all the pals running the show, abysmally. Can’t imagine why they would have sent him into three different debates and let him wing it and so totally unprepared for the avalanche that occurred. Surprised heads didn’t role and replacements with fangs brought in. Probably the money. National politics is not like Sunday School in San Marcos. Things will be different this coming week I feel certain. We know Anita is awake now anyway. :)

14 months to go and you think your guy is aloft? Permanently? LOL. Major set up on you, by the media, but suckers are made every day. Rick is the only one standing between you and the Romney nomination, but you have both hands up your nose and don’t know that yet. Stick around and prepare to be embarrassed....again....and mourn over now the second candidate you’ve fallen for, after already getting your head handed back to you on the nose of a baracuda. You’re going to get hosed againd. Hang elsewhere if you don’t want to hear Perry supporters, who have seen him come from further behind than this, discuss his comeback.

Sorry about that. In reacting to CajanConservative, I was going to make a reference to your bluntness to CC, in a humorous way, and then totally forgot to do it. I was somewhat impressed to see that you do not suffer fools gladly. Perry threads but barely get a hearing on FR in the first place, and then when they do the Palin bots drop by. Sorry about the confusion.

The quality of the appointment of judges is not getting enough scrutiny in this election. For those who want to squawk about GWB, the guy gave us two good SC judges and that is a very big deal.

Each candidate should be asked this question.

LOL Not a problem. No, I don’t suffer having baseless assumptions thrown at me. I try to do my homework so I’m a little short with those who don’t.

” We believe Perry has the right stuff to be president.”

All in for Perry here, too. :)

Add me to the list, all in here too.

That line is getting quite stale.

“Rick Perry has several negatives but compared to Obama, none that rise enough to vote against him. If he is ordained by the Republicans, I will vote for him...but if another is voted in, I will vote for him/her.

Anybody but Obama is my philosophy, simple but true...

Would prefer Cain at this point, but that could change...”

I’m pretty much where you are, but at this point I’m leaning a little more toward Perry than Cain. The reason is that in the primary, I think we need to adopt an “anybody but Romney” attitude. Yes, I think Romney is THAT bad. If he’s our nominee in the general, I’ll pull the lever for him, but other than that I wont lift a finger to help get him elected.

Because I want Romney stopped and Perry seems to be the only candidate that recognizes how much of a phony flip-flopper Romney is, I lean toward Perry. I like Cain, but I wonder if he’ll go the distance or if he just wants to strongly position himself as Romney’s VP. If Cain is really as pro-life as he says he is, I’d really like to see him call Romney out on his flip-flops on this issue. Until I see this happen, I will continue to lean toward Perry.

Gibbering idiots on parade. Romney could be a Zoroastrian or a pagan, and it wouldn't change the fact that your redneck banjo plucking idiot preacher is still a bigot.

He’s been out there meeting and talking to the American People. Just not on TV or Internet.

Yeah that's why his polling numbers are falling off the cliff. I got sucked in by Texan elitist liberal GW Bush but I learned. Fool me once... you and the other Perry suckups apparently have to learn the hard way.

Don't worry though, no harm done. He's toast.

If he became potus Perry would govern as a fiscal conservative and reign in spending and regulations.

That's what they said about Dubya. Then he got elected and the first thing he did was let Teddy Kennedy write his education bill for him while they sat and ate popcorn together watching some propaganda piece about JFK. Sorry, I'm not impressed with big talking Texans.

Ever heard the saying down there, "Talk is cheap?".

Come on! Dubya was not a real Texan and he was no conservative either.

Perry is a Texan and a conservative to boot. An excellent record as Governor. And he's about the best candidate the gop has to offer. Beats the liberal Romney and the neophyte, Herman Cain.
