While you are correct about tree stands and blinds in Texas, Louisiana, etc,,, out west it’s a different story. Walking and glassing,,then stalking into a shot is how it’s done in the west.
And bow hunting in the west is done with a stalk. My buddy got his 6x6 at 26 yards 2 weeks ago. They are less cautious when they are bugling. Something about being close to getting laid makes them exhibit bad judgement.
muzzleloader and bow seasons are fun out here.

Long ago a USMC ITR instructor was discussing patrolling, he compared it to deer hunting. Then he stopped himself and said,,”well, except in Texas,,,it’s more like an ambush there”.
I think she was telling it the way it was. She was calling up a predator (bear) and got wolf. Not that weird.

You may be correct, I head no ideal that western elk were deaf and could not hear are smell. You can probably walk upon one and kick it in the ass. But the one that lived behind my house for a year, you had to hide from to get close to. But then she was an illegal that slipped across the kentucky border, I guess having no papers made her nervous .

Having spend a few minutes hunting, I can tell you it is almost impossible to still hunt and walk up an elk and get in bow range.

Sounds like you need a few more minutes experience.

I have killed over 400 deer, the vast majority with firearms, but around 25 with a bow. And at least six of those were shot while still-hunting, not from a blind.

While bowhunting elk in CO I got within range of elk three times, but no big bulls, so I didn't take one. Stalking/stillhunting deer, either with gun or bow, is simply not that damned hard, it just takes patience and concentration. I have had a herd of over 20 does come thru the woods and bed down literally on all sides of me, closest about 5 yards - damned cool.

I've met many hunters better in the woods and I, and know several who have taken elk with a bow. Visit a local archery club and you will meet some, they are NOT rare, just work hard at what they do.

To me it seemed as though the individual elk was not as sharp as a whitetail, but hunting individuals in a herd, whatever the animal, increases the odds of getting 'busted'.

Yes, I have been in a blind and had white tails come up and smell the blind. You do not move they do not see you. Period. Have set out against a fence post and had them come up to me also. None of which is stalking, and yes I have watched them and tried to see how close you could get just for fun. Almost had a twelve pointer run over me once, he was dead, but he did not know it, he turned when I jump at him, died about 100 yards past me. I had shot him at a full run in the chest coming toward me, he just stayed on course, big deer, 308 on made him stumble a split second.

Spend many an evening trying to get close to the cow elk, got within twenty yards once, she did not see me she just stayed that distance away. Had intention of killing her, just enjoyed the chase. And I do not need to visit an archery club, have a really nice bow myself, just do not use it anymore. Lost interest in it. I varmint hunt, more fun, less work.

Unfortunately. They invaded suburban and rural New Jersey and brought anti-gun laws, anti-hunting laws, a plague of disease ridden deer that consume all garden plantings and create traffic accidents and a growing threat from an exploding black bear population.

No doubt some are, but I was listening to a group of “wolf enthusiasts” at a MacDonalds. Bunch of middle aged women and a couple of men about 6 or seven total, and they were just gushing over how wonderful wolves are. Now this was in Palm Beach county, and I think maybe two of them had actually seen a wolf, But I would rate them as terminally clueless rather than dedicated leftist.

What this lady did was crazy amazing.She is an excellent marksman and has ice in her veins or it was the luckiest day of her life. Do not expect to be able to do the same unless you are over prepared. With a wild animal coming at you, your heart will be beating faster than ever before. You will have no fine motor skills. Do not just put a pistol in a holster and think you are ready to defend yourself.
The biggest threat, by far, when out hunting, is getting shot by another hunter (dress to be visible). The second biggest threat is bear. They will often stomp or false charge, so you may have some time. Cougars are the third biggest risk. The are stealth hunters. You may know they are their when they knock you to the ground.
So: DO NOT HUNT ALONE, dress to be seen, if you carry a weapon for self defense - practice, practice, practice.
