Cyber-attackers could have stolen defense contractor's passwords

October 08, 2011

Passwords for servers at defense contractor Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) may have been stolen during a wide-ranging cyber-attack.

The Kobe Shipyard and Machinery Works, which builds submarines, and the Nagoya Guidance and Propulsion Systems Works, which makes missile-related products, were among installations compromised in the attack, which was reported to the Metropolitan Police Department on Sept. 30.

In total, 45 servers and 38 personal computers at 11 of MHI's facilities were infected with viruses.

An analysis of a virus used in the attack suggests the perpetrators used simplified Chinese characters, which are used in mainland China, according to sources connected to the investigation into the incident.

The servers, which were apparently used for sales work, were infected with a virus that included keystroke-logging code, raising the possibility that hackers may have discovered passwords and accessed part of the company's sales information. Some of the compromised computers contained information on defense equipment ordered by the Defense Ministry.

Is the Ning Po still at the Kobe Docks? If so send Bond-san and Aki to check it out. Maybe there is a SPECTRE link.

These attacks have been taking place for years, not only at the mentioned (or reported) locations, but (one would think) both reported and unreported locations have been under attack for unknown and known purposes. One attack mentioned (in the article) is over one year old on the Defense Ministry. There is probably a black market which buys and sells passwords (between God knows whom) and utilization of those passwords till they are expired by God knows whom. There are scammers (criminals) utilizing 800 numbers (outside the U.S.A.) to calls into the U.S.A. and other nation, who make scam attempts from the 800 numbers and the 800 numbers are modified and changed daily to keep confusing those who monitor the scammers (criminals). Looks like to protect passwords those passwords protecting sensitive data may need to be changed, via a program (and do not know how this would be possible) which can change a password at the first indication of an attack or intrusion (and daily if no attack or intrusion is detected), and relay the new password to an administrator for security purposes. Sounds costly, and that maybe is part of the plan by those doing the attacking? And then there is the security of those who would build and sell such a program, and would those building and selling such a program be trustworthy? Mom always said ... Damn the torpedoes, those computers are what is gonna get ya.

IOW, Chinese espionage. Time to look for a large contribution to one of the 527s supporting Obama.

Or Hillary Clinton.

Or pretty much any other Demwit.

Thanks TigerLikesRooster.

LOOK OUT!!! I’ve lost control of my drone and the last time I looked it was headed straight for you!!!!! You’ll prolly hear it before you see it. It was screaming “wansui!!!” at the top of its lungs.

Like they say the cockroaches will some day rule the world? Not with 18 billion hungry Chinese out there.

So you’re saying Republicans don’t support so-called “free trade”?

Really?

Hoover supported tariffs. That’s what we need to do, because it will help usher in another President-for-Life like FDR.

They probably shouldn’t have used “arotarotarot” for the password, too easy.

I don’t understand why Western democracies let China get away with this. Imagine if it was discovered that a Japanese or American company hacked into Chengdu and stole the plans for their J-20 ‘stealth’ fighter? Yet the Chinese have hacked and stolen data pertaining to the F-35 (news story some time last year) as well as this latest hack in Japan. Ofcourse there is no question what this information will be used for. Japan builds some of the best advanced Diesel-Electric submarines, and ofcourse the stealth technology in the F-35 is second only to that in the F-22 (and some of the avionics in the F-35 is actually better than the Raptor - where the Raptor beats the JSF is in speed, maneuverability, stealth and size of the radar - but in some specific avionics the JSF is actually better). Anyways, just imagine if Chengdu was hacked? Or data from the Chinese SLBM submarines was acquired (I am sure the US and other leading intelligence agencies already have it - I hope - but imagine if they did it with an ugly open hack). Anyways, some day that data may be used against American/Allied soldiers

Sad but true. You’ve been saying that for a long time C-N-N, and I pray more people are listening. And not just listening but also acting using their wallets and shopping choices.
