Earthquake Activity Intensifies On El Hierro (Canary Islands)
Irish Weather Online ^ | 10/08/11 | Mark Dunphy

The Instituto Geografico Nacional (IGN) has reported an increase in the intensity of earthquakes recorded on El Hierro, the smallest of The Canary Islands, during the last 24 to 36 hours. The number of earthquakes recorded since July 17 , 2011 on El Hierros has now reached 10,000, figures from the IGN confirm.

The IGN also confirmed surface deformations exceeding 35mm on the 280-sqkm island, where residents have been put on alert for a possible volcanic eruption. However, seismologists have moved to reassure the local population that a volcanic eruption is not imminent.

The agency confirmed on Friday that 890 earthquakes, most of them located in the sea to the SW of the island, have been recorded in the 7 days since 01 October, 2011. During this period, 76 earthquakes were felt by the island’s estimated 10,000 residents.

Since Friday morning, there have been 14 earthquakes exceeding 3.0 on the Richter Scale with epicentres both North and South of the NW Ridge and depths between 10 and 15 km have been recorded. The strongest of the tremors measured 3.8 magnitude on the Richter Scale. A total of 17 earthquakes were felt by the local population.

The EQ's yesterday had the accumulative energy of all previous quakes from the start of this swarm in July combined. The swarm is oddly transient and is now pushing to the northeast and have stopped their progession towards the surface. Given the seismic/volcanic shadow the swarm is generating and throw in the obvious suppression of magma, well the resulting EQ to uncap this volcano is going to be quite problematic. Stay Tuned!

A big quake in the Canary Islands could create a tsunami which could hit the east coast of the USA.

While remote this Island caused two (it is thought). If I had property along/on the East Coast USA I would just double check with my insurance agent that Tsunami damage is covered...seriously....lol!

I don’t know if you are being facetious but I have heard that several times.

The most recent entry I see on that chart is at least a month old, more-likely two.

I wonder what percentage of anyone who voted for Obama has ever heard of the Canary Islands and “What Lies Beneath”? I would guess at least 95%.
And if all hell breaks loose next year, the east coast gets hit, Who do you think Obama will blame? {Thank god I am on the west end of Florida!}

Interesting. But the article says they have had 14 earthquakes about 2.0. Not large enough to do much.

It’s not the size of the quakes right now it’s the trend.

“It’s not the size of the quakes right now it’s the trend.”

I think it’s interesting but I’m wondering why they are alarmed when it happens like that other places frequently.

Looking for the reasoning.

"A big quake in the Canary Islands could create a tsunami which could hit the east coast of the USA."

Yup! If that thing went down bad enough, I would NOT want to be on the NC Outer banks! I doubt there would even be any islands left if a tsunami were to hit that place.

Well the volcano is truly not the concern here. It's eruptions are not all that explosive, however for whatever reason the composition of the ground there makes for a wonderful blanket and battery so to speak.

The magma chamber is certainly expanding as confirmed by the inflation data from gps measurements and also a distinct rise in gas measurements.

However the EQ are being muted to a lateral movement suggesting the increasing magma is pushing left or right and not up.

Over the last week the EQ’s have become stronger and there is much to suggest that this energy has not been released instead is being captured or stress accumulation. It is possible that when and if the magma reaches the surface the resulting and or causing EQ will have plenty of energy to use.

Interesting in that this Volcano does have the history of strong pre-eruption earthquakes resulting in catastrophic consequences.
