..........Now that Chris Christie and Sarah Palin have decided not to run, many political watchers are predicting that there is room on the right for one more contender to join the top ranks. Santorum said his path to victory lies in the Iowa caucuses, The strategy is to go down and talk to the people of Iowa and do town hall meetings. And I have been to 70 counties of the 99 counties. We are not hitting huge crowds but we are hitting the people who are the engine of the Iowa caucuses. And they are talking and have influence in their community.
This week at the Value Voters Summit in Washington, DC, the big news did not come from a candidate for president, but rather a supporter of Texas Governor Rick Perry. Baptist minister Robert Jeffress introduced Perry and after the candidates speech said that Republican frontrunner Mitt Romneys Mormon religion is a cult.
When asked to comment about Romneys faith, Santorum whos a favorite of Christian conservatives, said that he does not believe Mormonism is a cult and that Mitt Romney is a Christian.

Romney tells conservative voters that poisonous language doesnt advance their cause ........."Perry told a reporter in Iowa that he did not agree with Jeffress.".......
Romney responds to Mormon flare-up; Perry passes ............"At an event in Iowa later Friday, Perry was asked if he believes Mormonism is a cult. "No," Perry said.".......
2008: Herman Cain endorsed Mitt Romney:
July 2011: ......"Mr. Cain on Monday became the first of Mr. Romneys nine declared and potential nomination rivals to say publicly and explicitly something long whispered: namely, that the former Massachusetts governors Mormonism is an obstacle too big to overcome in the most solidly Republican region in the country. The South has a high concentration of evangelical Protestants, many of whom doubt the legitimacy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Romney would be a good choice, but I dont believe he can win, Mr. Cain told editors and reporters of The Washington Times.
.....his religion. It doesnt bother me, but I know it is an issue with a lot of Southerners. Source
Lord love a duck.
Cain says that geographical and religious associations make one intolerant, then calls Perry "insensitive" on race and sucks up to Romney.
IF you'd rather NOT be pinged FReepmail me.
IF you'd like to be added FReepmail me. Thanks.
Santorum said his grassroots campaign, which has had struggles raising money, was able to make payroll and that his fundraising had zoomed up in the last weeks of the recently ended third quarter.
If you have a huge campaign and lots of consultants, you need a lot of money, Santorum said on "Fox News Sunday."
I dont. I try to just be the candidate thats real, thats out there and not scripted and not messaged by a group of folks who think that reading polls is the way you get votes in this country, he added."...
1. Grow a personality.
2. Learn that your country is being taken over by commies and government manufactured drones.
3. Not necessarily in that order.
Until such time, you ain’t goin’ nowhere.
Agree. Being a snot is not a personality.
I look for Santorum to be the next one to drop. Huntsman’s probably got more money.
Can you clear up this confusion?
What is Baptist definition of a Christian and ‘a cult’?
Every church, every person has to address Who is Jesus Christ? Is He Lord and Savior of your life?
4. Don’t support A-Holes like Specter over real conservatives like Toomey, especially when it leads to Obamacare.
Not a prayer.
I’m not a Baptist.
I have no problem with Mormonism being called a cult as well as flat earthers being a cult. I would not elect either one of them President of the USA because what one believes affect who they are.
Can anyone clear up this confusion?
What is Baptist definition of a Christian and a cult?
Per RCP, we haven’t seen a poll out of Iowa since the end of August.
While I find it odd we haven’t seen any recent polling, both polls (Ras and Magellen) had Santorum at 4%.
That’s not exactly “In Contention”.
“Santorum whos a favorite of Christian conservatives, said that he does not believe Mormonism is a cult and that Mitt Romney is a Christian.”
If he was quoted accurately, I am surprised that Santorum does not understand what Mormons believe. If Romney follows Mormon beliefs he is NOT a Christian.
His religion is not why I won’t vote for him though.
I’d say let’s look a lot closer at Santorum. He’s bright, speaks well, seems to have a lot of character, and he’s pleasant. Even a little charismatic.
We need a deeper bench now since Palin ... quit.
Mormons are not Christians but hey...it’s more then obvious the establishment and conservatives would rather lie to protect Romney then say the truth about that.
Santorum doesn’t stand a chance in hell at being elected to national office. He comes across as being FAR FAR too unlikable, on camera anyway.
Romney has a problem in this regard too. He comes across as being like that executive in the company where you work that everyone hates.
The idea of ANY politician, but especially one who wants to be President, getting into “who is a Christian” makes me want to vomit.
That having been said, making up stories about the relationship between LDS and the faith once delivered to the saints is just STUPID.
Santorum was on ‘hardboiled’ with spit-boy’ Matthews and said it wasn’t a cult. He also said Mutt Romney was a good and moral man.
I about barfed when he said that.
Yep, he really just not not come across as friendly or likable.
I propose the term “SDS”.
Santorum Derangement Syndrome. :D
Does Santorum have some doppleganger somewhere?
How are you guys getting Santorum’s unlikable?
He seems like an average, likable guy next door.
IMO Santorum is too embedded in Beltway culture to be the right choice now.
Dunno, just stating my opinion.
The guy redefines “wooden”.
Don’t see it. Really I don’t.
Seems honest and likable. I’d vote for him. In fact for several reasons.
One: He’s been vetted. Two, he’s moral. And frankly he seems to be right about things.
Then again, I liked Thaddeus McCotter too.
Cain only got in to promote his book. He hasn’t raised near the money or set up political organizations in the primary states. He is not a serious candidate.
“Can anyone clear up this confusion?

All I know is the Baptist Preacher that was being grilled by CNN talking heads on the subject, said that The Southern Baptist Conventions has two definitions of a “cult” - a sociological cult and a theological cult, and he was using the theological definition of “cult” in referring to Mormonism as a “cult”. Not sure what the official Southern Baptist Convention definition of who they recognize as being a “Christian” is.
Now I have a question. Since the article that was posted was about Rick Santorum who “ said that he does not believe Mormonism is a cult and that Mitt Romney is a Christian “, what is the Catholic definition of a Christian and a cult?” Surely that is written down somewhere also.
“If he was quoted accurately, I am surprised that Santorum does not understand what Mormons believe.”
I know I’d like to see the quote. Bad reporting if it’s not in the article, but for some reason Fox News is being blocked for me, so I can’t tell.
The other thing that bothers me about him is that he doesn’t have a clue about what’s going on in this country.
Just hearing him try to recognize the cause of the Wall St. occupiers tells me all I need to know about him.
Thanks for the input. It is still a mystery as to how a Southern Baptist defines Christian and know Romney is not one. You asked about the Catholic definition of Christian. I think that would be along the lines of being Baptized in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and accepting the Apostles’ Creed. Never heard the word cult in any homily.
Its not about what you believe, but about what you believe will get you votes.
I watched some of these posters here and it is obvious they are claiming to be Cain supporters [and were once Palin supporters] but in fact are Romney supporters sent in to go after Perry. JR is now seeing this and is now tracking some of these posters. IF they are Romney supporters yes, they are RINOS.
He was ok in my mind until the last debate when he kept shouting over Perry when Perry was trying to answer a question.
He would not shut up and let Perry speak.
That was not likeable, average or the guy next door.
And it was not Presidential for Santorum to do that.
For that, he became very unlikable to me.
If you really want to know post a thread on the religion forum and we will have a discussion.
Can you post what Santorum said?
He is great on the social issues, but when he could support a real conservative he chose to support a party jumping liberal. He could not win re-election.
Well here you go [candidates conspire against him, Perry had "poor judgment" on a rock that wasn't his that was covered over, and Santorum steps in it about an insurance program he knows nothing about -- but when did that stop -- PLEASE love me again after shooting myself in the foot for endorsing Arlen Specter -- I'll say and do anything to win Santorum].

“What is Baptist definition of a Christian and a cult?”
The SBC doctrinal statement - which is not binding on member churches - says, “Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.”
Mormons say Jesus is a created being, made when God the Father had sex with Mary.
The SBC also says, “The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God’s revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy.”
The Mormons say the Bible is true when correctly translated, but they also say anything they disagree with is incorrectly translated, although they cannot explain HOW it is a bad translation.
The SBC says, “There is one and only one living and true God. He is an intelligent, spiritual, and personal Being, the Creator, Redeemer, Preserver, and Ruler of the universe. God is infinite in holiness and all other perfections. God is all powerful and all knowing; and His perfect knowledge extends to all things, past, present, and future, including the future decisions of His free creatures. To Him we owe the highest love, reverence, and obedience. The eternal triune God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence, or being.”
Mormons say there are many gods, and each person can become a god of his own world someday.
The SBC calls organizations which claim to be Christian while rejected the person of Jesus, the oneness of God, and the scriptures, “cults”.
I don't believe he will go down. Campaigns have ebbs and flows. There were such high expectations surrounding Perry when he announced that he was bound to see a drop off in support. He compounded the problem by not doing well on the "gotcha" panels. Cain has gained support as Perry declined and Romney has stayed flat around 25%. When Perry improves his performance on the "gotcha" panels his support will rise and the Cain supporters will take a 2nd look at their guy and see some of the red flags.
However in answer to your question. If Perry is not the nominee I could vote for Santorum, Gingrich, Paul maybe even Cain. I won't vote for Romney even if it's vs, obama. If that's the case I'll support conservatives with money and vote on the local races.
Knowing your preference, I’d say readers can confidently take away from your post, that you see Santorum as a threat to Perry.
