Issa Eyes Political Connections That Drove Loan Approvals Like Solyndra

The Obama administration engaged in a pattern of approving loans that were not qualified to receive taxpayer money, according to one Republican House chairman who says the development is as disturbing as the potential loss of billions of dollars in investments.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Relations Committee, said Sunday that the administration's approval of a loan guarantee for solar power company Solyndra -- which went belly up shortly after a half-billion dollar investment by the federal government -- is just one example of a "breach of protocol" in approving loans.

Issa said the Energy Department actually approved $4.75 billion worth of loans on the last day that the law allowed for financial backing of alternative energy firms.

"We're finding it's not just Solyndra. It's a pattern of these sorts of investments," Issa told "Fox News Sunday." "One of the questions we have for (Energy) Secretary (Steven) Chu is, tell us why that last day, somehow, you had everything you needed and you didn't have it over a period of time before?"

He said that his committee is less interested in debating the merits of "green energy" and what qualifies as jobs created in that field than at looking to see whether political connections interfered in the approval process for struggling companies, and whether that interference pushed the Obama administration to back a loan for a creditor who otherwise would have been left holding the bag after Solyndra's bankruptcy claim.

"The American people have a right to except that the rule of law will guarantee that even if we don't like the policy, that it's done properly," Issa told "Fox News Sunday."

"Remember this was a $500 million earmark, effectively, by political appointees,

I am not so sure. It is a process. The administration will bluster, lie and deny. Then Issa will subpoena them. The Administration will stall till the last minute and then dump the documents on a Friday afternoon- again. Rinse, repeat.

Then we will see the nasty BS, but as in Gunwalker, we still do not have a special prosecutor. If Obama is re-elected, then we might get some traction if the Republicans take the Senate too, but if they lose, they will pull a Clinton and pardon themselves just before they leave office.

Their playbook is pretty clear. Unless we have some sort of John Dean come forward, most of this will just drag out, no matter what we find.

My 2 cents.

They also need to also investigate the company, Brookfield, affiliated with the private NY park, which allowed protesters to camp out for days. The company has recently received millions in DOE loans.

It gets ever more interesting. Brookfield Office Properties owns the Zuccotti [”grassroots” protester] Park in NYC. It is named for John E. Zuccotti, Co-Chairman, Board of Directors, Brookfield Office Properties. Also on the Board, as Managing Director, is one Diana L. Taylor. Who is Diana Taylor, you ask? Why - she is Mayor Mike Bloomie’s girlfriend.

And of course, such businesses have to employ lobbiests - you know - to plug their best interests with the Obama administration when it comes to getting loan approval for Brookfield’s Granite Reliable Power wind farm project - owned by BIAF Granite Holdings - up there in New Hampshire. The lobbiests for Brookfield Properties? Oldaker, BIDEN & Belair. As in Dopey Joe’s son, Hunter Biden. [http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/firmsum.php?id=D000036374&year=2002]

and thread at Ace of Spades HQTs, by Jammie weqaring Fool: Curious: Management Company That Runs Zuccotti Park Recently Received $135 Million in Tax Money for Wind Farm

Interesting also that they opened the park in mid-September, it filled with the protesters - right about that time [?], and on Sept. 23 their wind farm gets $135 million from Obama.

The link for Brookfield Office Properties brings up a PARTIAL 404 error, page does not exist.

Ignore that. Hover mouse over upper left “CORPORATE”; in the drop-down, hover over “CORPORATE GOVERNANCE”, and from that drop-down, hover over “BOARD OF DIRECTORS”.

At the bottom righ of that page, click on 3 for the page with Taylor and Zuccotti.

On the 404 error page, take note of the “Last Updated 10/7/2011 4:21:02 PM”

Isn’t it interesting that this “update” coincides with the White House Friday document dump?!!

You’re welcome. I just happened across this Brookfield stuff this morning, and smoke has been pouring out of my ears all day!

There are a lot of Republican officials who’d better be paying close attention to all that’s unfolding with this huge mess of a scandal. THIS type of scandal, besides the Fast & Furious horror.

Seems it should be getting time for these GOP nominee-hopefuls to exhibit some leadership and demand answers be aggressively sought. If they want our confidence in their abilities to lead and their sincerity re: cleaning up that sewer in DC, they need to start earning it. So far, there are several posters/commenters here, at American Thinker, at Hot Air - who have shown more qualifications for the Oval than the ones who think they should have it.

One potential problem is that they often include on the periphery of these scams enough Republicans (RINOs or people who only talk a good conservative game) that there’s much pressure from within to abandon the pursuit of the investigations. I suspect that’s why we ended up with only Monicagate being pursued instead of the more serious Chinagate or other Clinton-era scandals.

We’ll have to see where it all goes, but I hope Issa stays strong.
