Teachers Increasingly Use Home Visits To Connect With Students’ Families

By Kevin Sieff, October 9

The two high school teachers knocked at apartment 512 of a Crystal City high-rise and waited to see the inside of Alvaro Nunez Alvarez’s life.

Up to this point, the teachers knew this about 14-year-old Alvaro: He was quiet. He had recently arrived from somewhere in Latin America. He was smart and ambitious.

They were here to fill in the blanks — to conduct a kind of parent-teacher conference on the family’s turf. There’s no better way, many educators say, to turn distant or unresponsive parents into allies and communicators, actively involved in the education of their children.

But that means venturing far beyond the classroom, penetrating the private spaces that students disappear to when the afternoon school bell rings.

When the door to unit 512 opened, there were Alvaro and his sister, standing in their matching Wakefield High School T-shirts, blushing. There were his parents, well-dressed, deferential, letting out a stream of “thank you so much” and “it’s our pleasure to host you” in Spanish.

WOW!

How do you get by with that?

Do the Culture Cleaners know about it?

Do they know who he is?

I got it from the “Southern Partisan,” back when there was one. I don’t think most people would recognize him, and these days, probably wouldn’t even recognize a Confederate uniform. Given the general academic level of educationalists, if one came in here, she’d probably ask, “Is that your grandfather?”

As someone who almost became a teacher I can tell you that in the old days this was done. It was a good thing too. It helped the teacher teach better. Of course I am referring to schoolmarm Miss Crum who taught Opie. Back then we had prayer, the Bible and the “board of education” in the classroom as well. Yes Miss Crum actually used her ruler once! On Earnest T. Bass of all people. Getting back to the subject at hand, yea back then it was to help students, now I think they are snooping and would not trust them.

I wouldn't be surprised.

It is good to keep in mind what Santayana said about those who cannot remember the past.

Keep up the good work!

I have another print of a cavalry charge upstairs, and the baby likes to say good night to General Forrest, his horse, and his flag.

I will draw the line when my dental hygeinist and its partner knock on my door to pick at my teeth.

This is ridiculous in the extreme, but I am not surprised.

That’s the part that jumped out at me too, it says everything you need to know about statists. The “private space” the kids are “disappearing” to used to be called their “home”, the most important place in a child’s life.

Now government workers look at homes as dangerous hideaways where people escape from government supervision and which must be subject to spot checks by the agents of the state to make sure there’s nothing subversive going on.

Fascists the whole damn lot of ‘em.

Parents do not have to participate. Gardasil also had an opt out. In fact the Legislature did not pass the vaccine law, so not one dose was ever given. You are just taking a slap at Perry. Uh, I live in TX, so I am up on the laws there.

Actually, there is a provision in Obamacare Law that states that qualified government agents will come to your house to teach parenting.

If it were me, I'd say "get a warrant," but that would probably put me on some (another) list.

Anyone who'd willingly let an agent of the state into their home is a moron, and is complicit in the erosion of our freedoms.

Teachers in most states are bound by law to report any "evidence" of child abuse, and I really don't think I'm paranoid to believe that their idea of what constitutes "evidence" and "child abuse" is not at all like mine.

You put it perfectly.

Can I swing by my kid's teacher's house, to see if their private space reflects the kind of person I want influencing my children?

(of course this is a moot point because my children don't go to govt schools)

Might be a good idea after the parents missed about two parent-teacher-conferences.

But only if set up beforehand!

That NCLB crap was one of the reasons my wife gave up her teaching credentials.
