Millions could lose unemployment benefits in 2012 (extension is estimated to cost $44 billion)

Millions of unemployed Americans are waiting for Congress to do something other than trade barbs over their job creation plans.

If lawmakers don't act soon, the jobless see their unemployment checks start to disappear come January.

More than 6 million Americans are set to lose federal unemployment benefits in 2012, with 1.8 million running out in January alone, according to new figures from the National Employment Law Project.

President Obama's $447 billion American Jobs Act would extend the deadline to file for federal unemployment benefits for another year. Though the Senate is expected to take up the controversial jobs bill on Tuesday, it's unlikely to get very far.

While many Washington observers say the administration's jobs bill is dead in the water, it's possible the unemployment extension could be separated and sent through on its own, or as part of another bill before year's end. The extension is estimated to cost $44 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

so sad to read your post.

I pray this turns around quickly so you won’t have worry about whether or not there is an extension.

I’m hoping that once the nation understands Obama is out -the economy will rally.
People are tired of this crap.
Can you imagine how jubilant the country will be when he’s gone?
Once the recovery hits - it’s going to be big!

I hope it rallies like you wish for, but I doubt it. This country has taken such a wide, deep gash, it will probably take a long time to crawl out of. I hope I’m wrong, but without another huge advance (ie .com boost in the 90’s) recovery will be slow. I pray for fast recovery, but I’m becoming far more cynical about it. Politicians don’t care for it, they prefer strife and hardship, makes for good sound bytes on MSNBC.

Where do you live? I know here in “backwards” , high-tax, Arkansas, there are jobs. Not tons I super-high payng jobs, but jobs none the less. HP Jus hired a block of folks 30 miles north of where I’m typing this. Other companies have recently announced we hiring. Economy still stinks, but there are jobs. I have heard employers complain that there are lots of applicants, but few who REALLY want to WORK. Maybe the attitude is different... But even my family members in Michigan (no far from Detroit) are tellin me there are jobs.

And while I have a grea deal of sympathy (and have spent time w/o a job in my life), how are taxpayers responsible for paying unemployment benefits to those not working? Yes, am aware that the system is suppose to be fully funded by employer contributions... But that’s not the case.

I applaud your resourcefulness in planting a large garden to support your family. But how is continued extensions if unemployment any different than Jessie Jackson Jr.’s suggestion this past week that the government should just start payng the unemployed a salary of at least $40k per year?

But it goes back to making yourself marketable. You demo steered resourcefulness in feeding your family- use the same line of thought and resourcefulness to figure out a way to make yourself a resource an employer cannot live without.

I live in North idaho, just across the border from Spokane WA.
I’ve built radio towers, in my 20’s, that you run your cell phone off of, and hear your radio shows off of. I am HIGHLY skilled, please, mr battman, what is your profession? No details, just what you do.

You are relating my families struggle to Jesse Jacksons statements? I have paid FAR more into taxes, disability, unemployment insurance, etc. than I will EVER see from my measly unemployment check.
So, really HP hired some people in arkansas. Great. These are not new jobs, these are jobs that came from offices being shipped out of california, good for arkansas, not good for the 1200 people out of work in california. There are no new jobs, only poached jobs. Net gain for the country? 0

Please, let me know where you work, and what position. ,No don’t need your name, or specific details, not coming after you or anything, I just want to see how truly talented and skilled you are, and what a wonderful niche you have create for yourself! (10:1 I say you work for the government, or for family that has hired you on, otherwise, in the private sector, you would realize you re full of crap)

“not coming after you or anything” followed by “you re full of crap” - now nice.

If you must know - I spent 14 years as a public school band director, I have a Bachelor degree in Music (BME), and hold the Master of Arts in Religion degree. I currently serve as a church pastor - where I encounter many “stories”, both from within our church body and from the public seeking help.

I have also, when I was “unemployed”, done carpentry, drywall, concrete work, and other jobs to make ends meet. I have seen many others also adjust and apply themselves. I have also seen many people fall flat after setting themselves up for a fall. And I have seen people hurting and out of work for a long time due to no real fault of their own - some very good people with very real skills. I have noticed that the people around here with the most trouble finding new jobs are those with lots of experience and/or training, and who are “older” - over 50 or 60. They are “overqualified” for many jobs that are available. The key for most of them who have been successful in finding a job - is leveling with the prospective employer - selling themselves.

I don’t know the details of your situation. I do know that you have time to argue your point here on FR - seems that maybe that same anger, energy, and zeal could be better aimed at doing/finding some kind of avenue to earn income. I am not “full of crap” - I have seen what I have posted about. I have seen people in difficult situations, and I have seen both those who “give up” and blame everyone else, and have seen those who refuse to give up. And I have helped (as has our church) quite a few people who needed help (and references, and coaching). There are avenues to stretch the dollar. There are things we can give up. But I imagine my post will get little more than eye-rolling and a terse response that I am “full of crap”.

Now I have to go and “earn” my salary so you can get your unemployment extension.

Revisited this thread after some time. Hmm, how convenient! You have a government job! You are safe with Obama’s stimulus money! You will retire young, and get a government check and great benefits for life! How nice, and hypocritical for you! Some of us have to work in the private sector. Your paycheck, and wonderful benefits, are paid for by heavy tax burdens on people who could be hiring me! Get rid of your government job, could probably save enough to hire two private sector employees! This is wonderful Battman. You complain about private sector workers leaching, and you are helping to leach their jobs away. Better you keep quiet. I have a feeling your nice Degree in music (really? why does one need to get a bachelor to play music, I play 7 instruments fluently, never needed a degree) came from either a wealthy family, or huge student grants. You surely have a bad attitude for someone who was ‘carried’ their whole life, and has spent their working life collecting a government paycheck and benefits!

Oh, and a quick BTW, no extension, even YOUR community will get hit hard. If a lot of people lose their homes, property taxes will go down substantially. That’s where your paycheck comes from, correct? So will sales tax from those who are destitute. Your school will take huge budget cuts. I don’t think they will cut the Math department when those cuts come, but they will probably cut the music department. A marching band is not critical to education, it is fluff. Battman, you might just be writing your own pink slip with your opinion.

My income coming via property taxes? Ummm.. no. Where did that come from?

Oh - reading further down- I haven’t been in the classroom in over 3 years! But that being said, in this state, instrumental music is a state mandate, which is generally fulfilled via band and/or orchestra programs.
