Belafonte Attacks Cain: 'A Bad Apple' 'So Denied Intelligence' (and more)

Full title: Belafonte Attacks Cain: 'A Bad Apple' 'So Denied Intelligence' 'Don’t think prayers were created for him'

In a "Joy Behar Show" segment scheduled to be aired on HLN Friday, singer Harry Belafonte attacked Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain in potentially the most disgraceful manner of any media member to date.

While his host and others on the set laughed, Belafonte called Cain "a bad apple" that was "so denied intelligence...I don’t think prayers were created for him" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JOY BEHAR, HOST: Now, let me interrupt you for a second, because now you have someone like Herman Cain.

HARRY BELAFONTE: Who?

BEHAR: Herman Cain?

BELAFONTE: Herman Cain?

BEHAR: You know who he is. [Laughs] And he doesn’t believe that racism holds anyone back in any way now. I mean, you know, what do you think about that statement?

BELAFONTE: Well, you know, it’s very hard to comment on somebody who is so denied intelligence…

[LAUGHTER FROM BEHAR AND OTHERS IN THE STUDIO]

BELAFONTE: … and certainly someone who is as denied a view of history such as he reveals. He knows very little. Because he happened to have had good fortune hit him, because he happened to have had a moment when he broke through, the moment someone blinked, does not make him the authority on the plight of people of color. […]

BELAFONTE: I just want to make this observation about Herman Cain. The Republican Party, the Tea Party, all those forces to the extreme right have consistently tried to come up with representation for what they call black, what they call the real negroes, and try to push these images as the kinds of voices that America should be living through. So we got Condoleezza Rice, we got Colin Powell. I know they’re heroes for some people, but for a lot of us they’re not.

And Herman Cain is just the latest incarnation of what is totally false to the needs of our community, and the needs of our nation. I think he’s a bad apple, and people should look at his whole card. He’s not what he says he is.

BEHAR: No. I don’t think he has a prayer anyway in the election actually.

BELAFONTE: I don’t think prayers were created for him.

[LAUGHTER FROM BEHAR AND OTHERS IN THE STUDIO]

Of course Belafonte is going to come out against Cain. Belefonte's assistance with the Airlifts to America helped to get Obama Sr a scholarship to University of Hawaii.

"And he doesn’t believe that racism holds anyone back in any way now."

What qualifies her to speak for Cain? That's not a direct quote. She's not a Tea Party member, or a Cain spokesman.

For Belafonte to be questioning anyone else’s intelligence is the definition of satire. Maybe they can have Danny Glover on next.

I believe they are beyond educating.

When someone cannot be educated, it’s best just to marginalize them politically so that they can’t enforce their ignorance on everyone else.

Better yet: ask Bellefonte why there are so few Black Cubans in positions of authority. All I ever see are light-skinned Cubans like Fidel. Considering how far Harry’s head is up Fidel’s hind-parts I suppose he might not have noticed.

I especially enjoyed the “Muppet” version.

Harry I hope you ask yourself one day this one question:
Blacks have been with the Rat party for many many moons now?
What in the HELL do you have to show for it?
Then some smart blacks move to the RIGHT and see the light and all you can do is call them names.
Shame on you. SHAME- - - - - NIGHT OH . . . Looser.

So what do you do if your major claim to fame is as a singer and your last big hit was almost 50 years ago? If you're Calypso has-been Harry Belafonte, you spend the last half century making a major league ass of yourself.

His hate has been directed at blacks who serve in the Bush administration. Last week he described them as “black tyrants” and compared them to Jewish people who did the bidding of Adolph Hitler.

As I see it it is the same old broken record from this idiot Communist..He sounds to me like his president hating America and doing everything in his lowly power to destroy good...Typical Communist..Now here is more of what he does so read the article please..Just another has been..who sold his soul to the Devil..He like the the other Communist want to keep the blacks in slavery except for the ones that follow his Communist ways..Go to Hell Harry and take your ilk with you.. http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/bates/050816

No, this statement isn’t ignorant or defeatist:

“Because he happened to have had good fortune hit him, because he happened to have had a moment when he broke through, the moment someone blinked, does not make him the authority on the plight of people of color”.

What the hell is Belafonte talking about. Cain had to work his tail off to become a success. It wasn’t simply the luck of the draw! It wasn’t like he won the lottery. He earned what he has. And yes, anything is possible if you work hard enough! Why is that a terrible message?!

I can’t stand the cows on that show! I’m not surprised that they would host a commie like Harry “calypso” Belafonte! Who cares what these idiots think anymore. Don’t they have a police car to defecate on at “Wall Street”.

It’s like Booker T Washington warned people a century ago, there are certain people who don’t want racism to end, because it would end their money train. They have to invent racism to continue to justify their existence.

Uhhh, Harry, or shall I call you "Boo-boo, " You are the one hit with good fortune. God blessed you with a beautiful voice. (It's gone now, but was beautiful back then.)

Of course Herman Cain is only the recipient of dumb luck. In Belafonte's mind there is no other way a black person can be successful except to be a recipient of a freak act, or sell out to the white man. There's no way in Harry's world that a black man could ever be elected President...

Ooops. That just happened, didn't it? Must be dumb luck or someone blinked.

Behar constructs a strawman anyhow. Cain did not say racism poses no problems at all to black people who pursue success, only that it’s a far smaller problem than they think.

From his Wikipedia page:

On his ‘attending’ George Washington Highs school:

^ Arenson, Karen W. “Commencements; Belafonte Lauds Diversity Of Baruch College Class”, The New York Times,” June 2, 2000. Accessed April 16, 2008. “(He said that he had not gotten past the first year at George Washington High School, and that the only college degrees he had were honorary ones.)”

And he calls Cain stupid?

From what I can tell, Cain's ancestors came here on a slave ship and Belefonte’s did not. The irony is that if Cain does get elected he will actually be the first black from slave roots to be elected president, notwithstanding Obama and Bill Clinton. How funny is that? Especially since it was a Republican that freed the slaves.

You are absolutely right, it was one of the most racist comments I have had the displeasure to hear.

Belafonte could not acknowledge the success of a black man, unless it was at the hands of a white liberal.

Herman Cain needs to go after this nonsense, it is pure unadulterated racism.

I've always been pretty naive about the level of reverse racism.

Sharpton said yesterday that Cain is not 'black enough'. I'm finally seeing that what this term means is that he isn't bitter enough towards whites because of the past sin of slavery.

'Black enough' people carry the 'original grudge' as a badge of honor and an excuse to fail.

Sorry, sort of stark, but I can't see what else it means.

” The first person who can name a successful Republican Black Man who is NOT called an Uncle Tom by democraps wins.”

Those on the left think they are slandering someone when they label them an “Uncle Tom”. In Harriet Beecher Stowe’s book Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Uncle Tom was the good guy, the hero. The villain intent on doing harm to others was Simon Legree. Those that label others as Uncle Tom are acting like Simon Legree.
