Scientists '95% Sure' Bigfoot Lives in Russian Tundra
Time ^ | 10/11/2011 | Joe Jackson

Scientists and yeti enthusiasts believe there may finally be solid evidence that the apelike creature roams the vast Siberian tundra, reports the Guardian.

A team of a dozen-plus experts from as far afield as Canada and Sweden have proclaimed themselves 95% certain of the mythical animal's existence after a daylong conference in the town of Tashtagol in the Kemerovo region, some 2,000 miles east of Moscow. In recent years, locals there have reported sightings of the yeti, also known as the abominable snowman.

The Kemerovo government announced on Oct. 10 that a two-day expedition the previous weekend to the region's Azassky cave and Karatag peak "collected irrefutable evidence" of yetis' existence on the wintry plateau.

"Conference participants came to the conclusion that the artifacts found give 95% evidence of the habitation of the 'snow man' on Kemerovo region territory," read a statement. "In one of the detected tracks, Russian scientist Anatoly Fokin noted several hairs that might belong to the yeti," it added. The group also discovered footprints, a presumed bed and various other markers.

The scientific community has historically disputed the existence of the yeti given scant conclusive evidence. But numerous sightings of such creatures have been reported in Himalayan countries and in North America, where it is known as Sasquatch, or bigfoot.

30 years ago, I mounted an expedition into the NW Washington area to look for evidence of the Yeti. We inadvertently got on to an Indian Reservation. We ran into an obviously Native American who asked “What are you doing here?” I told him “We are looking for Sasquatch.” He asked “What?” I said, “You know, a big hairy, stinking thing.” He said “OOHH. You mean squaw snatch.” Sorry, couldn’t resist.

My guess is that these creatures are the illegitimate offspring of Michelle Obama.

I wouldn’t want to guess who the father(s) might be, but I’d bet that Reid doesn’t have an alibi.

Ugly, monster butts, knuckle draggers, cold blooded.... it all fits.

Magellan “discovered” them in South America on his fateful round-the-world-the-wrong-way voyage, naming them “Patagons” (bigfeet)and their desolate land “Patagonia”. They even captured a pair, who died of malnutrition aboard ship. Seems they had a ravenous appetite.

Don’t believe me? You can look it up!

The name Patagonia comes from the word patagón[2] used by Magellan in 1520 to describe the native people that his expedition thought to be giants. It is now believed the Patagons were actually Tehuelches with an average height of 180 cm (~5′11″) compared to the 155 cm (~5′1″) average for Spaniards of the time.[3]

Yeah, there were some "big foot" indians.

Yes, of course...and their explanation for never EVER finding a carcass of one of these things or a hunter ever shooting one?

Well, actually, we don't find carcasses of just about any animals in the wild very often. I'm not saying I believe there's such a creature out there, but apart from most of the odd crypto-zoology myths, the bigfoot is one that isn't all that unbelievable. I wouldn't say it's probable, but it is certainly possible that there are creatures in our wild lands that have gone mostly unseen. I say "mostly" because there ~are~ reports of people claiming to see one. Only a little less frequently than people claim to see cougars or bobcats.

Wouldn't a person have to be awfully convinced of the existence of Bigfoot already to travel to the middle of Siberia to attend a Bigfoot conference? I'm guessing that not a lot of skeptics who ask the hard questions made the trek.

I actually have a plaster cast of what is reported to be a Sasquatch footprint on my office wall. It was a gift from the late Grover Krantz, Sasquatch researcher and fellow Irish Wolfhound enthusiast. He knew that I was a skeptic about Sasquatch and will only be convinced by DNA evidence but I was polite in my disagreement, so we got along well.

My biography of him might have been poorly sourced, as the great majority of he and his crew never made it home to testify. Interestingly, the cargo they returned with on the one remaining ship actually paid for the 3-year voyage, at a slight profit; as the story goes...

It is good news we have from Siberia! Now that we have actual Sasquatch hairs we can have them analyzed for DNA sequences to see just how far removed they are from men or apes! Ain’t anthropology wonderful?
