CHECKPOINTS: Governor lessens impounds for unlicensed drivers

A bill signed by Gov. Jerry Brown this week stops police from impounding the cars of sober but unlicensed drivers caught at DUI checkpoints.

The law, which goes into effect in January, will bring relief to illegal immigrants, who are prohibited from obtaining a California driver’s license. They live in fear of losing their cars at checkpoints, said Luz Gallegos, of the Perris-based TODEC Legal Center, which assists Latino immigrants.

“It’s a great victory for all of our communities and a great blessing,” Gallegos said of AB 353, which was sponsored by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo , D-Los Angeles.

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, R-Twin Peaks, who opposed the bill, said it rewards people who never should be driving in the first place.

“The vast majority of people driving without licenses are in the country illegally,” said Donnelly, the Legislature’s strongest critic of illegal immigration. “I think unlicensed drivers are a danger and a threat to public safety.”

“If these people are driving without a license, give them a ticket. If you take their vehicle away, you’re taking away their livelihood. It’s just not right.”-Besides, having no license no insurance.Let these same people crash into someone with their no license, no insurance and taking away their livelihood, you will not see any supporters stepping forward to pay any outstanding claims. It's always about the illegals, nothing else matters..

And thus illegals gain “protected status”....

This doesnt apply to citizens with no license....the reconquista rolls on...

So, these people now have a right in California to be here illegally, and drive without a license or insurance, while Americans must have both?

Since you can't move the vehicle because you have no license you will be cited for blocking the street. A tow truck will be called to remove it. Note this law doesn't cover insurance which is a automatic tow. The big problem is the citizens of Mexico would have a cheap car to purchase at the auction.

Why bother having all these damn laws and regulations if we aren’t going to enforce them? This is just flat stupid.

I was on the LAPD in the 70’s. I was a good police officer and I arrested a lot of people. But I always thought the car impoundment thing was unfair. Even then the cost to get your car back was extreme.

One-bill Gil rides again, and again and again. . . .

Pretty soon it'll be ILLEGAL to be in California legally.

Hey folks, driver’s licenses no longer needed in Cali. Screw the insurance too.

Is it illegal to claim you have no license when you in fact do? If not then why would anyone stopped at a checkpoint ever produce one? What can they do? Give you a ticket? LOL!
Everyone in “Brown’s Folly” should just claim to be an illegal alien whenever you’re pulled over. It’s better than having diplomatic immunity! No paperwork!
