United States --(Ammoland.com)- Almost every morning the Disney Channel runs shortened versions of their “golden oldies” between some of their modern day cartoons as a way to fill time until the next scheduled show begins.
One morning recently my kids were watching the Disney Channel when they featured an old Mickey Mouse classic called ‘Mickey’s Parrot‘ which was originally released back on September 09, 1938.
In this episode, a parrot belonging to an escaped killer wanders into Mickey’s basement. Mickey hears it talking and thinks that the parrot is the killer who is on the loose who he just heard about on the radio. Mickey then goes and grabs his double barreled shotgun off of the wall and prepares to defend himself.
Well, wouldn’t you know it… in the version they presented on the Disney Channel the other day, they had digitally removed the shotgun and replaced it with a broom. Yes, Mickey grabbed a broom off of the gun rack, shouldered it, and prepared to defend himself with his handy, dandy tactical… broom.
Really, Disney? Really? Do you think we have come to the point as a society that we can’t even allow guns to be seen by children for fear that it will cause them to become crazed, blood thirsty psychopaths? Do you really think guns are so evil that the mere sight of one will cause blood to run in the streets? Give me a break!
Disney cartoons from that era have featured firearms literally more times than I can count. They’ve depicted firearms in terms of being a legitimate means of self defense, as a means to take game animals, and they have shown firearms as the indispensable tool that they are for every cowboy and cowgirl of the old west. Several generations have now been brought up with Disney cartoons that have depicted firearms as an integral part of their plot, and now you are telling me that we as a society can no longer handle it?…
That our children must be completely isolated from the mere sight of a cartoon gun? Ridiculous!
No one outside of Disney can definitively say why they would choose this extremely misguided approach to self censorship, but I find it very disturbing. Did they choose to do this because they are anti-gun? Did they do it because they actually believe that kids seeing firearms would be detrimental? Perhaps they are just so afraid of the loony liberal soccer mom’s that might email them about it that they felt it was just the easiest path to take. I dont know the answer to the question of “why” they are doing this, but my response to them is the same no matter what… SHAME ON YOU, DISNEY! SHAME ON YOU!
If Disney is actually concerned about child safety with regards to firearms, then I would suggest they team up with the NRA and devote some significant airtime to letting Eddie Eagle educate children about what to do if they find a gun. Not allowing children to be exposed to even the sight of a gun is not the answer. In fact, that’s what gets kids killed.
The responsible thing to do is to talk to kids about guns. Tell them about the dangers, and educate them about how to be safe. Disney has a captive audience to say the least, and they should be doing everything they can to educate children (and parents) in our nation about gun safety. Disney should be doing their part to give children the knowledge that they need to keep them safe if they do ever happen to find a gun. Spreading the message of “Stop. Don’t touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult.” is the path they should be taking. If Disney actually wants to make a difference when it comes to the safety of children, then they should be providing the millions of children that watch their network with useful information about firearms that will actually prevent accidents.
Disney sticking their heads in the sand and hoping that kids never see what a gun looks like is not the answer. Talking openly and honestly about gun safety is what will actually help children. How great would it be if an entire generation that is going to grow up watching the Disney Channel could be exposed to such valuable information about gun safety?
What Disney is currently doing is misguided and extremely dangerous. They are not helping to keep kids safe, and they are being extremely counterproductive towards preventing gun accidents in America.

I'd suggest that since there are waaaaaay more firearms in the US now than there were in 1938 (and much finer and more accurate firearms they are, too!) that this is an example of libs believing that if they can't see something, it's not there, so they don't need be concerned that it will disturb their cocoon. (MMGW excluded!)
At the conclusion of the movie, ET, the agents no longer have handguns, but have walkie-talkies in the revised version of the film.

A town by where I live had their weekend annual celebration and some famous bankrobber had robbed a bank there so they do a re-enactment every year. All the kids that show up get a free toy.
The free toy is a toy gun.

Cartoons are produced and edited by corporate attornies nowadays. It comes down to Disney limiting their exposure to possible lawsuits put forth by every whack job out there looking for any lame excuse to sue for a paycheck. I would call it censorship by possible litigation, or PC CYA vanilla mode.
I grew up watching Coyote and Roadrunner cartoons, and I have as of yet used an anvil, TNT, or rocket powered rollerskates to off someone (although I have entertained the thought from time to time).
I remember Chuck Jones, producer of many of the classic Looney Tunes, coming to speak at my college campus years ago. The move towards PC editing of cartoons on television was already underway. Jones led off his appearance with an impassioned plea.
“Tell these heavy-handed idiots to stop raping my cartoons!”
Years ago my daughter had a VHS tape of several Dr. Seuss cartoons. One of them was Horton The Elephant which contained a scene where a fish, seeing Horton up on the top of his tree/sitting on his nest while crossing the ocean on a ship, pulls out a large frame revolver and blows his own head off (in a “well, now I’ve seen everything” sort of way).
I was really surprised by by own adverse reaction to it, moreso that the scene was still in the cartoon.
My oldest just attended an Eddie Eagle program this summer.
It works. Good, common sense handling of the topic at an age-appropriate level. Note that nowhere in what they teach says "Be terrified at the mere sight of a gun." Which, IMHO, is exactly what needs to happen. :-)
The same program used that advice on things like lighters and matches. Again, it works.
Too late. I caught some on one of the cartoon networks, and barely recognized them.
Fortunately, the originals are on DVD and are uncut. I've grabbed a couple of sets, with my favorites.
I’m glad I got to see them all when I was a kid. Even back then, they were pretty old(this was in the mid 80s). I looked forward to watching them during ‘Saturday morning cartoons’ every week. Back then, the only time you’d see cartoons on TV would be on Saturday mornings.
Early this year, the commie idiot mayor of London banned tickets for kids to next year’s Olympics for the biathlon because he deemed guns to be “violent”.
The UK who incidentally, have a team participating in the competition argued they do have programs showing the safety factor of the sport. Later, the mayor OK’d.

We bought a group of DVDs with all the the unedited versions, the “Censored 11” and Song of the South.
I did not know that...then again, I’ve always hated ET and haven’t watched it for the past 15 years.
Speaking of Snow Job, in the current 2011 comic version he’s far from a lib and uses guns more than he does his skis.
My cousin in high school watched the just-finished GI JOE cartoon series on Hub and it’s far from your typical lib slant. In it, Snow Job is depressed because he lost his buddy in war but managed to help one of the on-the-run Joe’s escape Cobra by being a soldier once again and remembering his training in the Army. Last time I checked it won’t be renewed this season and probably got caught by the lib censors in Hollywood..
Growing up in the New York City area the local tv stations used to edit the housekeeper out of the old Tom and Jerry cartoons. When we finally got cable tv, we were able to see the entire unedited cartoons on TBS.
