Chinese-made drilling rig to be in Cuba by year’s end

A Chinese-made oil rig is on schedule to arrive off Cuba and begin drilling before the end of 2011, a spokesman for Spanish oil company Repsol YPF said Thursday.

Spokesman Kristian Rix would neither confirm nor deny recent reports of delays as the Scarabeo-9 rig travels to the Caribbean island, but he said the project has always been based on a window of time and things are still on schedule.

He said it’s impossible to predict exact dates for such a complex undertaking as transporting the huge offshore rig, which is capable of housing up to 200 workers.

Note: China does not own nor operate this drilling rig.

It is a rig owned and operated by the Italian firm Saipem, a division of Eni.

In January 2010, Repsol signed a lease contract with Saipem to use the Scarabeo-9 drilling equipment, which complies with all the technical requirements and all the limitations established by the US administration for drilling operations in Cuba.

I heard they can drill laterally several hundred miles. They plan on heading right for Tampa and other military bases in FL and the southeast.

I heard they can drill laterally several hundred miles.

The world record for horizonal reach is about 8 miles. It is a very large custom built rig and only done by a couple in the world.

Liberty Island by BP and Sakhalin Island by ExxonMobil are some of the very few that have extended towards the 8 mile reach.

Forgot to include some supporting link for long reach

Drilling world’s longest wells at Liberty
http://www.greeningofoil.com/post/Drilling-worlde28099s-longest-wells-at-Liberty.aspx

After years of planning and preparation, sometime this year a drill bit will augur its way into the ground towards BP’s Liberty oil field offshore Alaska’s North Slope. The drill bit, attached to a massive drilling rig, will test the limits of how far it is possible to drill from a surface well site to penetrate a distant oil reservoir in the deep subsurface.

...

Although just five miles offshore, some of Liberty’s wells will be located about eight miles from Endicott, thus requiring Liberty to extend over world-record horizontal distances of 34,000 to 44,000 feet to reach the Liberty field reservoir, some 11,000 feet beneath the seafloor.

"Wonder how the liberal idiots in Key West feel about this?"

Well...

1) The leftmedia has deliberately been keeping most of this story buried.

2) Most of them don't read the paper or watch the news anyway.

3) If anything bad happens, they're brainwashed so-called 'minds' will just blame it on GW Bush.

Don’t know if you were exaggerating for effect or not.

The LONGEST horizontal reach so far is just a bit over 7 miles.

No one can drill hundred’s of miles horizontally.
