Man who begs for money on New York streets revealed to be legendary comedian living in $3.5m home
UK Daily Mail ^

Posted on 10/14/2011 12:36:41 PM PDT by Lazamataz

was once known as 'The World's Foremost Authority'.

Professor Irwin Corey, comedian, actor and left-wing political activist, strolls along Manhattan's East 35th Street pan-handling every day, seven days a week, for the last 17 years.

Of course professor Corey - who has enjoyed a long and illustrious career spanning Broadway, television, theatre and comedy clubs - does not need the money.

In fact he is not even homeless, despite his scruffy, scrawny appearance, but has an apartment in an affluent area of New York which he believes to be worth $3.5million.

His reasons for posing as a homeless down-and-outer and hassling drivers for change are two-fold: Since his wife of seventy years Fran died in May he said it helps beat the loneliness.

The 97-year-old also donates all the money he raises - sometimes up to $250 a day - to a charity that buys medical supplies for children in Cuba.

Communist. Anarchist. Wants to donate to Cuban health care, but cannot use any of the money tied up in HIS apartment. Has to bum money from capitalists.

Besides, I thought Michael Moore said Cuban health care was so good..... I thought no money needed donatin'.

he’s not donating his money, that he uses to undermine America.

He’s donating the charity of others. How does that get him any bonus points?

What’s so charitable? He lies to people to get money from them which he then turns around and sends to the Communists in Cuba. True charity would be for him to sell his 3.5 million dollar home and donate half to charity and scale down on his own digs.

He’s the poster boy for some of the stupid political views and voting habits of New York and other Jews in this country. Will they ever wake up? Sadly, probably not in my lifetime. Corey probably draws a Rat Party paycheck for this facade. What a piece of human excrement!

I guess that all those stories Obama and his minions have been spreading about the terrible conditions here in the USA are false since we're OK but COMMUNIST Cuba needs the help.

And there are plenty of needy people/worthy causes right in his own backyard. Why ignore them?

Scumbag does seem strong, but this guy is misrepresenting himself to get money from others (fraud) rather than using his considerable assets to do the job. The ends NEVER justify the means, but don’t tell that to a liberal. While you may feel sorry for a guy that looks old and homeless, you would feel less so if you knew he lived opulantly and gives your money to prop up Cuba. Why can’t liberals be honest about their causes?

He should be using his own money FIRST, beyond a modest 'prudent reserve', of course.

It’s probably the deception part. He has his own money that he can donate, but instead he dresses up like he’s hungry and yanks heartstrings, and people think they are buying a hungry man a hot meal. Then, he diverts the money to Castro (regardless of where he says it’s actually going). All funds donated to dictatorships support the dictator.

The guy is 97, leave him to his Emperor Norton ways.

Emperor Norton wasn't begging while pretending to be penniless (false pretenses). From what I've read, he was a penniless man with genuine delusions that he still had money. Those who felt sorry for him saw to it that he was supported financially.

Very different situation.

Its no more charity than the enormously wealthy Nancy Pelosi standing on the floor of the house and declaring the need for Americans to ''invest'.

This is almost a life imitating art thing.
The old joke about the conservative and the liberal walking down the street.
They come upon a homeless beggar and the conservative gives the man $20 out of his own pocket.
They continue on down the street, and come upon another homeless beggar.
The liberal then reaches into the conservatives pocket and give the man $20...........

Having a charitable heart is fine, but taking money from others under false pretenses is the issue here. He should donate his own money to whatever causes he wants. He has no business pretending to be homeless to drive compassion guilt in others so they give him money.

What a hypocrite! Irwin Corey made a fortune as a comedian and lives comfortably, at 97, in a luxury Manhattan apartment, which is all well and good. But he masquerades as a ‘homeless’ old man and pushes his walker around the streets of New York soliciting ‘donations’ from others who are likely far less wealthy than Corey, then gives the money he collects to Cuban hospitals run by a dictatorial regime that oppresses it’s own people, because he hates America, the country that with it’s freedom and prosperity made it possible for a mere entertainer pretending to be a goofy know-nothing to have a comfortable life well into his old age. The irony is obviously lost on Irwin Corey but his hypocrisy is not lost on the rest of us.

His eccentric costume of a professor wearing dishelved but formal clothing and high-top basketball shoes was popular but he lacked the wit/humor/warmth to maintain popularity.

He's mis-representing himself when he begs as someone who needs the money directly. If he looked like hell, begged, and had a can which said "donating what I don't need to poor people in Cuba" I'd feel differently. If he's rich, let him contribute of his own substance rather than pretend that there's a personal charity transaction between him and the donor.

I very rarely give to a bum on the street. Figure my automatic monthly donations to a couple of homeless shelters downtown help more. On the few times that I have given to them, it is usually a cold bottle of water and a granola bar or something.

Although I’m always worried they might trade or sell it for booze or drugs. And now I guess I have to worry they might send it to Cuba now too.

And if he’s lonely - he could spend time serving food, etc. at the nearest homeless shelter. I imagine it would be too much for him to invite some of them to his place for a bite to eat or get a hot shower. Perhaps if they were Cuban?
