WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is following through on his longtime plan to take his two daughters to see the new monument to Martin Luther King Jr.

Two days before speaking at the monument's dedication, Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha made a surprise visit to the new memorial to the slain civil rights leader on the National Mall.

In my experience it is never a safe area of town where the “Martin Luther King” stuff is. I would never take my kids there.

I know what you mean. Was in Oakland not long ago, with some people. Had a rented car. The Garmin thing in the rented car told us take Martin Luther King Blvd. It was clear that the neighborhood was changing rapidly the farther down King Blvd. you traveled.

I'd like to see Dr. King rise up and slap Obama upside the head. Shameful how his memory and legacy are exploited for personal gain.

This would be the white Chinese built monument that King’s family held up until they were paid $800,000 plus management fees.

King's "willingness to sacrifice himself for our country, to fight for a dream he believed in, like justice and equality, really gave a foundation for President Obama becoming the president," Jarrett said.

LOL... yes, because we all know BamBam would "sacrifice himself" for our country. (yes, I said OUR, not HIS).

he would tell his daughters "that this man gave his life serving others. I will tell them that this man tried to love somebody. I will tell them that because he did these things, they live today with the freedom God intended, their citizenship unquestioned, their dreams unbounded.

Nice catch!

Unlike DumBO his daughters have birth certificates.

Somebody?

“Longtime plan? It was opened about two months ago, right?”

The posted article mentions that Obama gave a speech at the groundbreaking for the memorial in 2006. Included in the speech were his thoughts about taking his daughters to see it upon its completion.

Here’s a transcript of the speech he gave-
