BAGHDAD (AP) The U.S. is abandoning plans to keep U.S. troops in Iraq past a year-end withdrawal deadline, The Associated Press has learned. The decision to pull out fully by January will effectively end more than eight years of U.S. involvement in the Iraq war, despite ongoing concerns about its security forces and the potential for instability...

P.S. Admins...I’ve never tried to post to Breaking News before, so if I goofed somewhere, sorry about that.
these fools can't get out of their own way.
I guess we’ll be seeing a lot of Barry and the ‘RAT Tab and Apple Choir singing “I’ll Be Home for Winter Festival” during the Winter Festival Season this year.
The Walter Cronkites school wins another victory. The US surrenders.
Bring our troops home now!! All of them!! From everywhere in the world!! Before Commander Obama gets them all killed for nothing.
Thanks for the update. It appears the administration is taking the same change-by-the-minute approach they did with Egypt and Mubarak.
As General Patton said “I don’t like paying for the same ground twice”. Thus lets pull out, but if the occasion occurs again that we need to return, we should install a parking lot first.
Frankly with the rules of engagement our troops have to work with this may be the right thing. Plus we will need them back here to remove the Socialist and Anti Americans for the offices they will be voted out of. Oh yea then tried for treason.
And here’s the danger of electing someone simply because on the surface, they seem good at debates, deliver “soaring” oratory, and look good in a suit. America fell for one of those this time—don’t let Republicans elect another one in the primaries! I’m seeing several really good Republican candidates rejected, even on FR, because they don’t possess these shallow qualities that got Obama elected. If we pick Romney for our candidate, we just have Obama with an “R” instead of a “D.”
I feel like they are doing this preparation for an Obama campaign add
“I ended the war in Iraq”
airing on TV stations across the country next year while those same TV stations will not cover the story on the horror that breaks loose when we are gone.
Yup. Obama: Let the killing fields begin.
Shoring up his base...commies and protestors/flea bags should be happy. Gee, right before the election? Go figure.
this is just embarrassing.
Sorry, I don’t see this as a valid comparison to Vietnam. We lost there. In Iraq we have won. We got rid of Saddam, crushed Al Qaeda In Iraq, rebuilt the miltarty, and put a democratic government, however disfunctional, in place. We still have forces in Kuwait. Can’t we ever win one and go home?
Of course Bush did the heavy lifting, and Obama will take credit, but that’s the breaks.
Good! We’ve wasted enough blood and treasure trying to nation build in that hell hole.
Iran is probably going to move right in.
Lost? As in lost the battle? No way, Jose. Lost the media war, thanks to commie lovers like Cronkite.
We should deal with Iran directly, once and for all. Anyway, if the Iraqis want us out I don’t see how we can stay. At least Obama didn’t compromise our troops legal immunity.
But we STILL have a military presence in Japan, South Korea, and Europe 50-70 years later. No way Obama’s going to withdraw ALL of the troops. It would mean genocide for the Iraqi citizenry. He would OWN the bloodbath that would soon follow.
Obama needs more troops for the Dark Continent.
No, I know we won all the battles. Lost as in our political goals for entering the war wer not met, because our leaders fought for a draw, while the enemy fought for a win. In Iraq we have met all of our important political goals. Now the elected Iraqi government, that we put in place, wants us to leave, and will handle their own security. I don't see how we could refuse to go.
We went to Vietnam to contain communism, and Vietnam has been communist since we left. Sounds like losing to me.
As for Iraq, it is no longer worth our time and treasure. We’ve done everything we set out to do, and its time for them to stand on their own two feet. I’m with another poster... can’t we win one and just go home for a change?
US: We want to be out ASAP.
Iraq: Please stay as long as you can.
US: We want to have permanent base to use against Iran.
Iraq: Please leave ASAP.
Just a reallocation of assets. Bring them home in time for a Christmas break so they can be in the new theatre of Uganda chasing Christian freedom fighters wanting to rid their country of the radical Islamists.
Not because we lost on the battlefield. Our media and politicians lost the war for us at home.
There you go. Hussein is simply shifting our military resources from fighting against Islamic terrorism, to fighting FOR his Muslim brothers.
No, the Iraqis would own it. They are the ones insisting we submit US troops to Iraqi law, or leave.
Arab spring is about to become Arab winter, but on the bright side, Israel won’t have to ask to overfly Iraq ever again.
Nope. We had evicerated the North Vietnamese Army and virtually wiped out the Viet Cong. A remarkable accomplishment given the the insane ROE's we shackled our troops with. All we needed to do was provide a modicum of support to the South Vietnamese (just like we need to be doing in Iraq).
Democrats in Congress wouldn't even do that for our allies. Tens of thousands that suppoerted a free South Vietnam were slaughtered or imprisoned when the country was overrun. Maybe we'll see a replay in Iraq in a few years...
So you bought that Walter Cronkite BS too? We had that one won after the Tet Offensive. The NVA was preparing to surrender until General Cronkite decided that we lost.
This was in a day and time that the media was trusted and we only had the three networks.
So what do you want to do? The Iraqi government wants us to either submit our troops to Iraqi law or leave, which, btw, we signed an agreement to do. Are we supposed to overthrow the government we set up militarily occupy Iraq forever? What do you suggest? I would like to hear a real plan.
probablygoing to move right in.
There are more than one way to win a war, or lose it. We didn’t lose on the battlefield, but we lost. As Clauswitz said, war is the continuation of politics by other means. It doesn’t matter who won the battles, if you don’t acheive your political goals. The NV goal was to take SV and create a united communist state. Our goal was to stop them. They won, we lost.
Not actually. We won decisively in military action. The lying bastard Water Cronkite falsely reported that we lost, and the rest of the MSM (sole source of information then) played along.
Even the South Vietnamese did well at holding the line and forcing the North to retreat, UNTIL the DemoRat traitors in Congress cut off their funding and ammunition.
The Rats have been traitors since WWII.
“The Rats have been traitors since WWII.”
Good Post, but actually traitors since WWl, Woodrow Wilson l.
Deja Vu all over again. Dayum!
Marxist, Muslim bastard.
I followed it all and do remember it vividly. The RVNs did well with US air support. When we withdrew it they crumpled. It is true that Congress cut off aid at the end, but they still had huge stockpiles in place. In any case, the whole goal of the NV was to bleed us until the American public got sick and demanded a withdrawal. They had a lot of help from various people on the left, but more than anything people just got sick of the war. Personally I blame Johnson for getting us into a war with no real plan to win. I just don’t see any comparison with Iraq.
Did we ever fight such a long, costly and important war and then pull out completely in 8 years?
Where next? South Korea and the DMZ perhaps?
A significantly large portion of the DemoRat party (in power at the time), American media, entertainment industry and unions goal was to create a Communist state right here in the USA and everywhere else they could.
We had no common goal.
I doubt it. Iraq is stronger than that compared to its enemies.
You are, of course, correct.
Early in the 20th Century, Communists promoted their cause openly, and there is proof that Joe Stalin funded numerous Communist front groups (ACLU), Lenin had sent operatives as well. The New York Times had Soviet reporters that fully informed them of Stalin's genocides, and they published not a word.
Before WWII they all went to ground because they were attracting the attention of anti communists, and continued with the infiltration and sabotage to this very day ("environmentalists").
Sisyphus didn’t have it as hard as someone trying to disabuse folks of comforting myths.
