To those who still think we live in the United States of America, I offer this as proof that the United States of America is a myth.

From the eminent philospher, Pogo, “we have met the enemy and he is us”.

Next step is to tell students to face Mecca and bang their heads on the floor.

Back in the 1950’s and 1960’s we had to learn the Marseilles, but that was in French class.

Yep. Had to learn that one as well. And I do know all the words to O Canada since I've been following hockey since I was 9.

Le Marseilles is a song that has some farther cultural context. I doubt anyone on the planet has even heard the Mexican National Anthem unless they are down there at a baseball or soccer game, or watching a Mexican TV station sign-off early in the morning.

....and bang their heads on the floor.

Hey, you may be on to something. Just think of all the money we could save! Right now it takes the State 13 years to brain damage our kids in public schools. We could cut it down to 6, 7 months tops and we wouldn't have to pack all those lunches!

Isn’t the Mexican National Anthem, “La Cucaracha”?

Don't be silly, everyone knows it's "La Bamba"

This is fairly common in foreign language classes, French, German and it teaches about the culture of the country.

Not a big deal and Perry should not bother to comment.

How is this any different than kids singing “Le Marseillaise” in french class? It’s not like they were really pledging allegiance to Mexico, it’s just a spanish class.

William Brinsdon is still having a hard time fathoming the idea of reciting foreign pledges and anthems in a U.S. public school in the first place.

“Our kids don’t even know the [American] national anthem and here we are…teaching them to memorize and perform the national anthem for Mexico,” he said. “I just think it’s so backwards.”

Maybe McAllen ISD needs to change their curriculum to include teaching the US Anthem and Pledge and maybe the parents need to step up their involvment with their children's teachings also.

Teaching about the culture is one thing. Repeating a pledge or oath or worse engaging in a cult practice is quite another. This is nothing short of indoctrination.

Don’t try to introduce reason into the conversation. This is FR.

She’s just preparing them for college folks. That’s when they can join these folks.

Interesting hand salute they gave but we used to do the same for our own pledge at one time. We grew out of it, they have apparently not.

Judging from the article there is at least one young Texan lady who took the high ground and stood by her beliefs. Good for her! This story will resonate in the community but probably not in the media. I will not be waiting expectantly for Gov. Perry’s comment, although it would be refreshing.

I took Russian in college, we weren’t forced to sing the Soviet National Anthem.

I’m afraid I don’t understand. I don’t feel indoctrinated, and I am not aware of French attempts to put a foothold in America. I AM aware of napoleonic law, and how it bugs me that it exists.. but this is more the fault of Louisianans than the Dauphin.

Did I miss something ?

“Don’t mess with Texas.”

You kidding? Only one student objected. None of the other students had a problem with it. They thought it was fine and dandy.

“Not a big deal and Perry should not bother to comment.”

Listening to a national anthem, or maybe singing it through once, for info is not a big deal. However, pledging allegiance to another country’s flag is a huge deal. Perry needs to comment, and loudly.
