Peacock looking plucked as NBC cancels shows (Dinosaur Media DeathWatchâ„¢)
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | October 16, 2011 | Johnathan Storm

Posted on 10/18/2011 7:42:41 AM PDT by abb

The Peacock is looking like a bedraggled starling at the start of its first fall TV season in Comcast's nest.

Three weeks in, overall viewership, according to the Nielsen Co., is up at CBS and Fox, and down less than 1 percent at ABC, vs. year-ago numbers.

But at NBC, it's down 6 percent.

More ominous: Despite a new entertainment boss and a large bump in spending on program development, NBC has seen the average viewership of its five new series drop a stunning 28 percent from levels achieved by last year's five new series in the first three weeks of the season.

I have enjoyed the few episodes of Whitney that have aired. Free Agents wasn’t bad either. I like humor that doesn’t have politics injected in it.

“Most of them use the same script, with minor variations.”

For a vast majority of the viewing audience, that works. All they want to see is attractive people doing interesting things.

That’s why there’s CSI: Miami, New York, L.A., Buffalo, Trenton, Allentown, Duluth, etc.

NBC’s biggest primetime gamble just became the first cancelled show of the season: The Playboy Club has been pulled from the network’s schedule.

We have Direct TV and apparently they have some kind of a contract dispute going with CBS. If it’s not settled, we won’t be able to see this channel after November 1. It’s going to be a crisis in this house if we can’t watch Gibbs on NCIS!

Why? Doesn’t this reduce revenue and put people out of work?

Maybe they should have nurtured Friday Night Lights better! One of the best shows in many years and they couldn’t move it to a better time slot. If they moved it to Tuesday or Thursday, when it wouldn’t compete with live football games it would have had a shot.

The best character and best show on TV.

I agree. I wish you luck. I predict that they will settle it. If it was some obscure channel then I would worry but being a major channel, I THINK they will settle whatever issues they have. If not, you can watch it on CBS.com. Not as great but at least you will able to view it.

“How are they doing on their MSNBC Democrat Infommercials?”

Oh, you mean their news programs? Seems their man has got low ratings.

Speaking of networks going down the tube...one of my favorites SyFy has gone off the deep end on wrestling and reality shows. I realize that sci-fi series are expensive, but I really used to enjoy some of their good shows.

I wish there was a channel that would just show some of the old 60’s & 70’s sci-fi shows...But I guess that is where Hulu comes in...

On Tuesday, for instance, Harry's Law, the network's most-watched scripted show, got an order for six additional scripts, despite its relatively old audience. Network execs were encouraged by a whiff of strength in the show among DVR users.

Harry's Law is just another foolish NBC Communist morality play, with leftist writers tossing turgid bits of propaganda and idiotic liberal tropes into every other line of the script.

They lay it on so heavily that it's even less watchable than Law and Order SVU (that is, unless you play a drinking game where you get to down a shot every time you identify yet another stale Commie propaganda ploy).

I guess the only show we watch on NBC is “Prime Suspect”, which, I think, must be an American remake of the popular British show of the same name that starred Helen Mirren. We like the show; hope it’s not cancelled.

I predict that they will settle it.

We're with DISH. About a year and a half ago, we lost the entire ABC network, including local Portland news, for nearly six months due to Fisher Communications dispute with DISH. The only thing we really cared about was "Jeopardy"- we were reduced to watching re-runs on "The Game Show Channel". We were really glad when it was finally settled.

Good Sci fi always does well. Shortsighted networks still pull the plug. Any network that green lights new Firefly episodes would have a ratings bonanza.
