Emanuel paid heavy price to get elected mayor (proving residency=$800K -- job pays $216K)
ABC Chicago ^ | 10-18-11 | Chuck Goudie

As mayor of the city of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel is paid a salary of $216,000 a year. He spent four times that much money just to prove that he was a Chicago resident and therefore entitled to run for office.

*snip*

he court challenge that Emanuel had to overcome was proving that he was indeed a Chicago resident and had been for at least a year as required by law.

Emanuel had held onto his home here in Ravenswood, even though he and his family had moved to Washington where he was President Obama's fiery chief of staff, and the house was leased out.

But Emanuel and his legal team won the case, and Emanuel won the election.

According to expenditure records on file with the state, he paid about $800,000 in legal bills.

The Mayer Brown Law Firm was paid $10,000 in January, $215,000 in March and $200,000 in June and September each time.

Emanuel paid experts from another firm about $100,000.

There are still outstanding legal bills of $74,000.

The law firm expenses are just a fraction of what Emanuel spent overall to get elected.

He spent about $13 million, much of it on television ads.

Even though he didn't bring in any new campaign funds the past few months, the mayor's account still showed more than $1.3 million in the latest state records.

Must be something ....

Hope somebody figures it out before his term(s) end.

Separetely, I saw the Big Rat today, with it noisy human fleas, disturbing the peace outside Sothebys. The last time I heard such a racket was actually the first time I'd come across this type of thing -- rabble making life miserable in front of a business. I was not surprised to recall that it was about 8 years ago, outside a hotel in Chicago. Must have been a dress rehearsal.

Correction...He didn’t pay it, his contributors did so.

Typically no politician pays their own way.

What the job pays—$216,000—is chump change. What really matters are the favors of all stripes that benefit hizonner with the passage of time.

Ask the Daley’s.

Rahm didn’t pay a penny out of his own pockets; his lawyers were paid from the campaign fund. And the legal fees were a drop in the bucket compared to all the TV ads and other costs. That’s the way politics works nowaday: we’ll spend well over $1 billion just in the presidential election to see who will get the $300,000 (or whatever) job as president. But you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way, since limits on campaign contributions and expenditures only serve to help incumbents and maintain the status quo.

They all have a salary in the $100,000’s and leave office multi-millionaires. Then some wonder why the hatred of public officials is growing to monstrous proportions.

Barry the Imposter spent over $1 BILLION for a job that pays (above board) $400,000.

He is prepping to do the same thing again for Nov 2012 election.

800K is just peanuts. Rahm, the AC/DC dancing queen, is now the head of the mob in Illinois. The Daleys, with one small break, ran the Irish mob for decades. Are any of the Daleys on food stamps?

It’s all about ego for the godfather of Chicago.

Besides he made $16M or some huge amount by trading (and no doubt, greasy cronyism and insider tips). After all, someone just isn’t that smart or lucky to do so in a few years, starting from a modest amount of cash.

He didn’t prove residency. He proved you don’t have to be a resident to be Mayor.

True but money won’t save him.

No amount of advertising will.

He got 53% against McLame and a dispirited R party with everything in his favor.

He’ll get 42% this time.

Enough for a landslide loss in a 2-way or a Clintonian plurality win in a 3-way.

I liked it, also. Thanks! Thought Daley decided not to see re election because he wanted to spend more time w/the family. And read where his wife was sick.

So back to my original thought - told his time is up - the dancer wants the job and he’s coming home.

They all have a salary in the $100,000’s and leave office multi-millionaires.

Is this true, I mean the all part? There are decent, caring public servants. We must be careful not to paint them with the same brush as the other power hungry, wealth grabbing, left leaning riff raff.

Rahm’s net worth is around $13 or $14 million. I doubt he personally paid that $800,000, but even if he did, it wouldn’t hurt his finances any.
