Mark Gibbs on E-Cat
October 18, 2011 2:24 P.M.
By Reihan Salam
At Network World, Mark Gibbs has a column on E-Cat, a low-energy nuclear reaction technology developed by the Italian inventor Andrea Rossi. It sounds, and most likely is, too good to be true. Gibbs projects what might unfold if E-Cat works as promised:
Let’s assume Rossi’s E-Cat works. What then?
From the demonstrated prototypes it appears that you could build E-Cats small enough to power a car or a house. Bundle a lot of them together and you could power a truck, a ship or an office block. Imagine a data center where each row of racks has its own really cheap power generator.

Now you have a world where oil only matters as a raw product for things like plastics so the oil economy as we know it could be dismantled within a few months. Production costs for anything would fall. The power grid would become obsolete. Power stations of all kinds would no longer be an environmental problem. The balance of economic power worldwide would change and, for example, OPEC would become a historical footnote.

The only risk, assuming that the E-Cat doesn’t become horribly radioactive after extended operation or produce some other kind of hazardous byproduct, could be global thermal pollution from so many power generators (if they are very cheap and not dangerous then niceties such as minimizing waste heat would be ignored).

We could see a world where ubiquitous power generation is so cheap it wouldn’t be worth metering (as a consequence, Rossi would become the wealthiest man in the world, assuming that all of the vested interests in the existing oil and power economies didn’t have him bumped off). [Emphasis added]
A public demonstration in Bologna is scheduled for the 28th of October.

As a thought experiment, it’s worth thinking through what might happen to the wold if “production costs for anything” were to markedly decrease. Might labor-intensive manufacturing in emerging economies take a hit? And if so, will this contribute to large-scale political unrest? Moreover, resource extraction is not just important to OPEC: Norway, Australia, Canada, and the United States, among many other countries, might see a pronounced internal shift of economic and political power. It’s all very intriguing.
This can’t be serious.

The article sounds very much as if it were hurriedly written in half an hour.
Could our “journalist” here have written this after a three day bender ... with his boss threatening to fire him?

I don't think I have seen an article claiming that Ecat will cause anthropomorphic global warming before.

A public demonstration in Bologna is scheduled for the 28th of October.

According to a statement by Rossi, this test may be private.

We will run also in self sustained mode, the periods will depend on many factors. In any case, the power output will be 6 times the power input. About the snakes: the time of the snakes is over. The start up of the 1 MW plant is the end of the mental masturbations of enviuos, wannabe theorists, lecturers of calorimetry and engineering. Now LENR goes to the market. The test will not be made by me, but by the Customers’ consultants. Time of chatters is over. Maybe the test will not be good, maybe: it will be the first time I will start up a plant of that dimension, but in this case the problem will be the Customer, not the bunch of imbeciles that instead of understanding that we actually made LENR a reality lose their time digging holes on the surface the water in the middle of the ocean to find the wine. And in the case this test will go not well, we will learn and remake another, and another, and another, but, be sure, we will arrive to the target. At any cost.

As a thought experiment, it’s worth thinking through what might happen to the world if “production costs for anything” were to markedly decrease.

The "dividend" that would be produced in this scenario would be immediately spent by politicians and other elites. It would be converted into a larger dependent class, a larger guaranteed voting block for them. It would be used to supress individual initiative, to undermine thrift, and to devalue self-control and delayed gratification.

In the not-too-distant future, robots are going to displace a huge percentage of the low-skilled work force, already such a hassle to employ. Politicians are going to immediately scarfe up and coddle this segment of society with excuses and promises, trapping them and their decendants in the never-ending cycle. They will be used as yet another ballast load in the never-ending struggle to reach the tipping point.

BTW, thanks for the articles Kevmo. I read every one.

NRO is considered a blog?????

A blog is something like Billybobsonline and then the author turns out to be Billybob pimping his blog. I see it all the time and those are the ones that bother me.

Well, doggone fella' the robots are already displacing about 90% of mid-level management in every country on Earth.

You might not notice it but I was there when it happened ~ just BANG, no more management positions ~ all at once it's specialists and analysts with computing power that could have displaced all the intelligence forces in all the armies on Earth during WWII, and on their wrists watches built out of scrap computer chips that were still more powerful than anything we had built up until 1960!

It's time for the working class to find itself DISPLACED BY MACHINES!

It's only fair!

That’s really going to prove your case .. you never responded to the dns record for that new distributor/customer of Rossi having a 2.95 domain hosted on a server just setup in January that isn’t even registered to do business in the United States and referenced a fake corporate headquarter based in New York State.

This is so freaking fake, anyone who would give this even cursory scrutiny of the facts would find Rossi a failed con artist with shills hawking his greatness to the world.

Clocks a ticking .... October is here and people are going to start pressing the fraud button and the authorities are going to prosecute this guy this time. He has crossed multiple Federal and State Laws now.

The stories I find more intriguing are the guys who gave up when they were inches from pulling diamonds out of the mine. Like Xerox — they had the personal computer, ethernet, the GUI all wrapped up and could have OWNED the whole market. A genuine, $Trillion mistake.

Or HP, when they signed off on the two Steves to make that apple “computer”.

Or the guy who went flying the day IBM showed up to ask him to write an OS for the Personal Computer.

That kind of thing.

From your article: “It sounds, and most likely is, too good to be true”

That isn’t exactly a sterling endorsement.

What was it our Mother’s told us?: “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is”

In other words, it is false with the author holding the slimmest of hopes that he is wrong and the thing will actually work. If the author had done his homework, he would have dispelled any remaining hope and not bothered writing this to his blog.

***Let’s put your hypothesis to the test. SPeaker is Lee Skilling from Enron, has a past but knows financials. Location is North Pole. Lee says he has found the hidden ruins of bukabuka, worth $5B. He needs $5M to dig it out. There are 20 independent archeologists & scientists & a few bukabuka afficianados, all of whom say there’s something down there. Any person would be wary, but the presence of those independent witnesses changes your whole scenario so much that you are unable to adjust to the reality on the ground. You are unable to think inductively, your emotions about Lee Skilling’s past get in the way.

You are a very scintific thinker, as explained, that is what got you into trouble.

I am a logical critical thinker, before I try to even consider evaluating an article or a subject.... I evaluate the source an potential motives of the author / subject.

Then I can either put on scientific hat, a business hat or what ever I need to for considering the opinion or news piece in front.

After some fact checking and some careful consideration, I may or may not press the “I Believe” button.

For some reason, really imaginative people such as yourself, don’t have this logical process, they go right into embracing the subject and try to evaluate the details.

The Chinese have an expression. “View High Up, View Low, View on the Side, Then you understand”

I think you got the Side view covered.

***That’s funny, right there. If you were such a thinker you would have contributed to some of the logical criticism going on. But instead, I’ve caught you in dozens of logical fallacies over the past many threads.

You REALLY consider yourself a logical critical thinker? Nahh, you’re just messin’ with me, right? Here’s a hint: Logical critical thinkers evaluate the data first, then the source and potential motives of the author. You have a gigantic hole in your critical thinking process, and you cannot even see it.

Please take my money.

I am wrong, you’re correct, it does say, “NRO’s domestic-policy blog”.

Nevertheless, this is newsworthy as I think the Ecat is a magnificent device for separating people from their money and I do want to see what the latest excuse for not running the test, not running it as long as they said they would and finally, there’s that little bit where the preheated it for what, four hours before the test? And still they didn’t run it as long as they’d advertized.

A little advice, lose the arrogant attitude and your antagonism towards other posters; it is not winning you any converts. You’re comparison between what you call logical thinking versus scientific thinking makes no sense. If anything, scientific thinking would say that this device violates the laws of thermodynamics, therefore, it is a fake.

If inventors relied on logic instead of science, we’d still be using candles and buggy whips. Besides, I’d say you’re relying on emotion and not logic or science.

We’ll see what happens next. Either he runs the test using valid parameters and accounts for all energy in (such as preheating it for four hours) and it runs over unity which will surprise me but it would be nice if it worked. OR, Rossi will once again come up with a reason for not running the tests he said he would.

My opinion, based on science is that it will not work and he will join Joseph Newman on the slag heap of the history free energy.

Maybe I’m wrong about you. I just went to this thread:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2794833/posts?q=1&;page=1

And I see a bunch of cheer-leading for this Rossi guy yet what has he done? Someone mentioned that he’s used other scams in the past, does anyone know what they were?

Someone also mentioned that Rossi has a degree from a diploma mill, is that true?

I still don’t believe the Ecat works at all. Why does it take four hours to heat up? Why does it need preheating at all? What is the supposed theory behind its operation?

The device I saw looked like it was built inside a shipping container. What didn’t make sense is that if this thing is putting out so much heat, why is he able to use PVC pipe to send the steam to whatever generating device he chooses; I assume he plans on hooking this thing up to a steam turbine. If I’m wrong, someone please point it out. How does a PVC pipe withstand the pressure and temperature of steam?

I am using logic, you don’t have to look at this that deeply to know it is a fraud.

Arrogance is bred by the absurdity of this man.

Like a man who just came out of a insane asylum, convicted multiple times of defrauding people, says he can make unlimited electricity from the air.....instead of ignoring on his past history alone ... we have people in this thread who would bother to ask him how.

I see poster after poster fall for this...it is like a mental disease spreading .... it is the same affect you see in the crowd at a 3 card monte con but on the Internet.

all true, all good points

Rossi got his diploma from a California Diploma Mill that was shut down and the Atty General of the state sent the Dean to jail.

This same diploma is the one that Rossi referenced earlier in this scam but has since stopped talking about it.

We even have pictures of apartment building in Mimi Florida and his Partners in NH.

Even done real estate searches to determine if Rossi even had a factory in the US as he claims ... nope , nothing

Even looked for this new distributor/partner, the website was just put up in January, the domain name purchased for 2.95 in December of last year.

Like I said, you don’t have to plunge into scientific thinking to know this is a fraud. Just look at the landscape of this.

calling him a “stalker” doesn’t make me believe him or Rossi any more.
(even moreso than Rossi’s “self destruct” device he is forced to put in his equipment... to protect a “secret” that Rossi himself admits he can’t explain, and which no major company or goverment is interested in...)

This bet is about the October 28 demo that Rossi is planning.

It’s okay if you haven’t heard of it, and have no idea about it. You would decide if the demo does what it claims. Rossi says he can produce 1MW. The output is only heat, not electricity. So you would decide if his demo generates 1MW of heat. There have been lots of folks looking at the contraption and they’ve found no hidden wires or pipes or batteries. If they do, then obviously Rossi is a fraud and I would lose the bet.

Here’s the URL where I issued the challenge.

We would all need to come to terms, which is an interesting discussion because based upon all the invective I would think these guys would offer 10:1 odds, they’re so certain. Anyways, have a look and let us know if you’re interested. I have been pushing for a little extra tip to go to whichever freeper steps up to decide. It’s not much but it’ll buy you a good six pack of beer.

what will also interest you is Google and the key bump phrase in the article/blog. When one story is posted another bunch of similar stories are all posted at the same time.

That is how you know it is a orchestrated effort.

If I could get the data from Google, I bet this has been going on for the last 3 years or more. Would be a fantastic chart on how to manipulate people.

I am wrong, you’re correct, it does say, “NRO’s domestic-policy blog”.

Nevertheless, this is newsworthy

scientifically - the following statement is as much as can be supported by fact/evidence/observation.

A device of unknown construction and function produced heat and liquid effluent when fed with a clear liquid at near room temperature. The device required electrical input at the beginning of the heat production period.

no it’s not, if you want to post it in news you need to go to the blog’s source and post the original news article.

Otherwise, there is a blog category for your use on FreeRepublic for posting blogs.
