Keith Olbermann: Paid $10 Million to Lose Viewers [ Free Republic is bigger ]

Keith Olbermann is not in the witness protection program, but he might as well be. His show on Al Gore’s Current TV (America’s least watched network) has lost nearly a third of its viewers in four months.

Pretty impressive result for $10 million a year. That’s just his salary.

Countdown with Keith Olbermann was a major draw when it was on MSNBC. On January 21, the network took a big hit when Olbermann announced on air that that would be his last show for them. Then in June, Current launched Olbermann and Countdown.

It was no surprise that Olbermann drew a big audience for its early shows - averaging 106,000 viewers a night. Unfortunately, by August it was down to 79,000. Last month’s numbers were even worse. Olbermann’s average was down to 46,000 viewers and was in no danger of coming close to breaking into the top 30 cable TV news shows. None of the top 30 is all that impressive in terms of audience. For the third quarter of this year No.1 Bill O’Reilly had 2.8 million total viewers, while No. 30 - the 12 AM showing of Dr. Drew on HLN - had 435,000.

If FreeRepublic had only page view per day, from an informed, intelligent Conservative, it would still be “bigger” than anything Olberdork could ever imagine.

Gore apparently was just looking for an excuse to reward Olberman. Surely the station was so stupid as to believe Olberman would attract viewers.

46k viewers is beyond deplorable. I think our local public access station averages more through the evening.

Put into perspective, Drudge averages 1.3 million hits an hour. More people go to Drudge every 2 minutes than have been viewing Doperman.

Allow me to draw a perspective on the size of Olberman's audience...admittedly, it may be apples and oranges, but I'm not here to talk about last night's debate. ;^)

On 12/3/2010, the Coppell Cowboys played the Euless Trinity Trojans in a Texas Regional Final game. Because the game sold out more than 48 hours before game time, it was broadcast on local TV.

Trinity won 41-40, scoring a touchdown on the final play of the game. According to the Dallas Morning News, "The game garnered 99,030 total viewers, which, in the target audience of 25-to-54-year-olds, meant a 1.5 rating and a 4 share locally. Males in the same demographic had higher viewership, with a 1.8 rating and 5 share."

In terms of personal anguish, that game ranks right up there with Franco Harris' "Immaculate Reception."

Wayne’s World had a larger audience!

My College station was larger.
