Perry Commits to Flat Tax, Reforming Entitlements
The Weekly Standard ^ | October 19, 2011 | Daniel Halper

Posted on 10/19/2011 11:05:30 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Las Vegas - In a brief speech this morning at the Western Republican Conference, Texas governor Rick Perry announced that in six days he would reveal an “economic pro-growth package that will create growth” and encourage investment in America. The plan will involve major tax reform, entitlement reform, a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, an abolishment of earmarks, and a recommitment to energy exploration in the United States.

“Our long term growth requires a fundamental tax reform,” Perry said. Therefore, his plan “starts with scrapping the three million words of the current tax code—starting over with something simple: a flat tax.”

“I want to make the tax code so simple that even Timothy Geithner can file his taxes on time,” the Texas governor said, taking a jab at the treasury secretary who had major errors in his tax returns that were revealed after he was nominated by President Barack Obama for his present job.

“The second part of my plan involves the serious commitment to spending, realizing alternatives” to the path taken by Europe, Perry said. In this vein, the Texas governor went on to affirm his commitment to “reforming entitlements, preserving those commitments to those who are on Social Security … and those approaching the age of retirement.”

Perry did not give further details on what the new flat tax rate would be (or how it might work) or on how he would reform entitlements.

On the balanced budget amendment, Perry committed to campaigning in all fifty states, if necessary, in order to get the provision added to the Constitution.

And he promised to end earmarks: “My plan is to end earmarks for good.”

In revealing tidbits of his economic plan, Perry played up his anti-establishment credentials.

...I have the sense Perry is not going to be rushed into stating a Perry policy on anything until he has all his ducks in a row, similar to the way he waited to announce his jobs plan recently. He’ll take the slings and arrows while he formulates his plans. Slow and steady....

Yes like most politicians he has to put his finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing before he announces his position or changes it should the wind be brisk.

Thanks to Cain the tax system is finally in the forefront of American politics. Others have tried, but failed to get this kind of recognition. Perry’s hand has been forced. Let’s see where it all goes. What will Slick Mitt do?

Damn. Say what you want about HC, the man has totally shifted the debate. Would love to see a top tier of Cain & Perry debating what type of flat tax to employ.

Tution for children of illegals is NOT FREE! It’s called in-state tuition. Get your facts straight because you are 100% wrong on this issue.

999 is a marketing ploy - a catchy phrase that people will remember. Much like $9.99 pizza. It’s a pretty good strategy, except that Cain is having problems explaining the plan to people. With the 999 plan - the emphasis is on the catch-phrase more than the details.

Perry’s plan sounds pretty good - I can’t wait to see the details and how Perry sells them. That will be telling, and will do a lot to compare him with the other candidates and their plans.

Perry has checked and raised the field play by three. Taxation and Energy and a JOBS record are a very big deal. He has now proven to any doubters to be a serious contender and seeing this speedy arrival of substance will result in another cash surge from the big and small dogs who care about taxation, energy and JOBS. Checks please? Good bye Santorum, Bachman, Huntsman, as we thin the field to Perry, Romney, Cain, and even Paul for awhile. Newt?

Cain is a long time friend of neal boortz, they worked together, his plan is what it is because Neals plan is copyrighted. Cains plan is Neals plan, he just cannot say so and unlike johnny come lately perry, Cain and Neal have talked about tax plans for years. The main thing Cain stepped forward trying to cut the size of government, while the two little rinos, Perry and Willard, played dry hump. Their act last night was kinder-garden.

I never was a fan of Perry's. I made that clear here in the past.

Romney is a RINO and strikes me as an odd character. I have several Mormon friends. I love them all but I think that Romney's being a Mormon will hurt him. The Mormon Jesus is not the same Jesus most Americans follow. This will be used against him. Cain is great for the campaign but he has little cash and very little campaign structure beneath him. Newt is the most informed person around but he has been uber-flaky over the years. I first met Ron Paul when I was a kid and used to drive around with him from campaign stop to campaign stop, He was saying the same things back then that he does now. But, he is way too long in the tooth and is a little unbalanced. Bachmann is creepy-crazy and seems like she wants to jump on the nuke ala Slim Pickens, scream like a banchee and go for a ride. Santorum is the karaoke singer of the group. He has heard the tune, he knows the lyrics, but does not sound like the real deal. No star quality.

At this point I support Perry. We are a long way off and to go the distance the winner needs three things: Money, Money, Money. Money buys so many things crucial to a campaign for president. Media, people, data, electronics, etc. Perry has that and he is not Romney. It is not likely to happen but a Perry/Rubio ticket would be insane. If Perry is around in 90 days I would not be surprised to see Palin come out for him. It was obvious that they had been talking. Perry knew Palin was not going to run when he jumped in to the race.

Good news! Cain is driving the debate on taxes and the other candidates are shifting to the right. Thanks for the update.

"Free" taxpayer subsized college money for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

THere is no free taxpayer subsidized college money for illegal immigrants in Texas.

The Texas college system charges a premium for out-of-state students. Students who have lived in the state, and therefore whose parents have been paying state taxes, do not have to pay the premiums. They pay the "in-state" tuition rate, which apparently in Texas covers the incremental costs of a student at the schools. (I know that in some states the college costs are subsidized for in-state pupils).

If a child has attended texas high schools the required number of years, and has maintained a solid grade, and qualifies for a state institution, they pay the full in-state tuition for that school, without regard to whether they are considered legal or illegal.

The state loses no money from allowing the students to attend college. The state actually receives money from these students, which pays the salaries of the workers at the schools. This isn't a handout.

Interestingly, there is a federal law that requires a state which allows illegals to pay in-state tuition based on residence must also allow every citizen the same in-state tuition. I would note that this is a clear violation of federalism and state's rights -- the right of a state to decide for themselves who they want to give discounts to. We conservatives tend to applaud THIS particular usurpation of a state's right to spend their OWN state's money as they see fit, because we just hate illegal immigrants that much.

But the Texas law is not based on residence, it is based on successful attendance in a Texas high school. Any kid from ANY state who attends a Texas high school gets the same treatment (and yes, there are kids who are residents of other states who attend texas high schools and get this treatment, mostly children of members of the armed services but also some parents like Texas schools and pay for their children to attend instead of their home-state schools across the border).

Anyway, it would be a real shame if a great conservative leader was rejected by voters who will love what he does as President, simply because they are upset about a few thousands kids a year getting in-state tuition at state colleges.

Maybe Perry out to start by cutting out his ENTITLEMENTS TO ILLEGALS!

Even Aggies have had it with Perry's In-State-Tuition grants to Illegals!!!

Petition Governor Perry to Call Special Legislative Session to End In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants

The Honorable Rick Perry
Office of the Governor
P.O. Box 12428
Austin, TX 78711

Dear Governor Perry:

I am deeply disappointed that Texas tax dollars are being used to subsidize the college tuition of illegal immigrants in the state of Texas. The Texas government, especially in these troubling economic times, should not be subsidizing the higher education of adults who cannot legally work in the United States.

Governor Perry, I request you to immediately call a special session of the Texas Legislature in order to end the policy of providing in-state tuition and financial aid for illegal aliens at Texas public universities.

Thousands of United States citizens are currently paying $20,000/year more than illegal immigrants to attend college in Texas; illegal immigrants are also receiving tuition waivers and state financial aid. As a candidate running for the office of President of the United States of America, I ask you to put the interests of American citizens before the interests of citizens of foreign countries, especially those foreign citizens residing in the United States illegally.

Please end this unfair policy, which harms

Art Laffer helped WRITE 9-9-9. Why wouldn’t he endorse it.

Of MORE interest is that ONE of the authors of 9-9-9, Steven Moore, now says Cain should drop the sales tax from the plan.

It is funny though seeing so many people citing the author of a plan as some independent proof that the plan is a good one.

Perrys, tax plan, oh, sounds good, where is the link. You can probably get an Oliver typewriter off of ebay, so you can do the normal, bogus long time position stuff.

Good to hear that Perry is taking lessons from Cain!

It’s going to be interesting watching Perry supporters sell this.

They will be fighting the very lies they perpetuated on FR about Cain’s plan.
