Here's Why Russia Wants To Train A Thousand Snipers

Reports in Russian media suggest that the Russian army is hoping to train 1,000 snipers in the next few months.
The move is a major reorganization of the Russia's army. Earlier this month Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Sergey Vlasov told reporters We are establishing a phased, multi-tiered system for selecting and training candidates, to teach them how to work as part of a unit and independently. All snipers will have special training once every three or four years.
The announcement has been met with confusion. With reports that the snipers would be pulled from normal troops and the first group would only have initial training of 3-4 months, experts argue would likely be useless in a major war situation.
So why the rush? Liz Fuller at RFE/RL hypothesizes that the snipers are being trained for some kind of close-quarters, urban-warfare type situations which could definitely mass demonstrations or an Arab Spring-type action.
Which leads us to wonder what exactly Russia are expecting...

As the former Soviet officers age and retire, you’ve begun seeing some real changes in Russian War-fighting ideas.
A few years ago, they began training NCO’s on initiative, and operating independent of command. I’d put this down as another step.
Snipers are an important part of US capability.
WOW Thank You, I didn’t know about that guy, JUST WOW!
Yeah, he is a legend.
Perhaps the recent urban fighting in Libya had some effect on them. Many snipers involved. Instrumental in delaying the anti-Gaddafi forces from capturing key parts of various urban environs due to infestations of snipers.
2. 1000 of them is no where near enough if this true
3. There are more “snipers” in any back water Alabama town during hunting season - and they train themselves!
Can we rent them for a little temporary duty around Wall Street?
"Who wants to send a message to Germany?"
You do not need 3 or four months to train a sniper, dang, some of the best in the world had none are a couple of weeks current army is 5 weeks.
YUP.
I'm in a 'back-water' Alabama town...my neighborhood built our own firing range to practice for the coming civil-war here in the US.
Point 3: indeed!
The USA has some 18,000,000 of them about to begin annual training (operation “Deer Season”).
Also, Sniper Alley in Sarajevo.....
Apparently they are going to undergo 3 months training to get to the point that they are accurate at 400-500 yards. Not a great jump in capabilities.
“So why the rush..... urban warfare”
Putin was indicating a revival of the Kremlin.
Probably not scout-snipers but rather designated marksmen such as used by U.S. forces.
Yep. Designated marksmen is what they will be.
