U.S. Interests: Dictator Moammar Gadhafi finally met his bloody end at a rathole Thursday, and Libyan crowds celebrated. President Obama praised the rebels, proclaiming: "You have won your revolution." Not so fast.
If there is one thing that we ought to know by now, it's that getting rid of a dictator like Gadhafi is the easy part. Gadhafi was a monster, but a known quality. What's hard is ensuring that what comes after isn't worse.
The cheers heard as Gadhafi's body was dragged through the streets are mere echoes of those that followed the downfall of the Shah of Iran in 1979 and, more ominously, the ouster of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt this past spring.
Everyone knows what happened when the cheering ended. Societies having neither freedom nor institutions became sitting ducks for Iran's mullahs and Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.
Will a Jeffersonian democracy follow in Libya? It's not likely, in the absence of an assertive American role.
The U.S. contributed $1.1 billion in war-fighting and humanitarian aid to Libya's revolution, more than all the other NATO nations combined. Democracy talk aside, the U.S. has a big stake in this revolution and an obligation to push for a pro-U.S. result.
Sadly, these days a strong U.S. presence is lacking.
Transitions to democracy pretty much operate on the George Soros globalized "velvet revolution" model big crowds, nongovernment organizations out front, and ecstatic, United Nations-certified elections.

The sad part is that the replacement will be terrible but still better than the socialist we are stuck with.
Who will take over? I suspect Muslim Brotherhood or radical islamists.
One by one the leaders that prevented al Quaeda or MB or the islamists from taking over are being eliminated.
When will it be the Saudis turn?
Hillary is over there pledging millions of US dollars in aid, they are very oil rich.
Obama is craven and depraved to congratulate them on murdering Qaddafi. But he owuld have loved what the Bolsheviks did too then
Great Negotiator Obama.
20,000 surface to Air Missiles missing?
Obama might have some answering to do in a few months.
Qaddafi surely deserved whatever he got. That said, he was no longer working against us. He was not against us. For that reason this kenyan administration fomented a rebellion and overthrow in Libya in order to replace the murderous despot who had given working against America with a new probably Jihadist despotism that will fit right in to the Iranian/AQ/Hamas/Hezbollah/etc. axis.
We have no idea who we are dealing with in Libya.
All this Arab Spring giddiness is a Trojan Horse filled with Islamic extremist h*ll bent on toppling America.
“All this Arab Spring giddiness is a Trojan Horse filled with Islamic extremist h*ll bent on toppling America. “
And I would not be too surprised if Hillary and Obama are not orchestrating this.
But I have no sense of Huma.
Proof that IBD doesn't get the fact that we're broke and that Muslims lack the necessities for 'Jeffersonian democracy'. Not to mention that it's none of our business. IBD is certain to endorse Romney.
I keep thinking about the Shah of Iran and what we ended up with.
And those missing missiles.
Gadhafi: Who’ll Replace The Devil We Knew?
I’ll recommend Obama in 2012.
Moslems don’t do democracy (unless they are muslims living as citizens in the United States of America)
the moslem brotherhood will most likely fill the power vacuum
America was founded as a representative republic, as most of the founder recognized democracy as rule by the mob.
the ‘arab spring’ will likely prove to be the consolidation and precursor to the next attempted world caliphate.
Hopefully we will be around to participate in and write some history.
Just 2 cents worth,
your mileage may vary.
Well, Obama’s a short timer here
Klinger didn’t age very well.
