Russia: Geneva Convention flouted in Gaddafi death

(Reuters) - Russia believes that Muammar Gaddafi should have been treated as a prisoner of war according to the Geneva Conventions and should not have been killed, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday, calling for an investigation into his death.

"We have to lean on facts and international laws. They say that in a course of armed conflicts international humanitarian rules written in Geneva conventions are enforced," Lavrov said in a radio interview.

Gaddafi died in unclear but bloody circumstances shortly after the fugitive former strongman was captured by transitional government forces on Thursday, two months after he was driven from power in a civil war.

"They say that a captured participant of an armed conflict should be treated in a certain way. And in any case, the prisoner of war should not be killed," Lavrov said.

Russian official says Gaddafi was lynched - October 21, 2011 - A senior Russian official on Friday called for clarification on the death of former Libyan dictator Moamer Gaddafi, saying the country was unstable and subject to mob rule.

'At first glance, it looks like a mob lynching,' Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Russian parliament foreign affairs committee, wrote in an internet blog.

'We need objective information about the circumstances of the death of Gaddafi,' he said. 'I have mixed feelings.'

Kosachev said Gaddafi's death did not solve the problems facing Libya, and called into question Western media reports saying fighting in the country was at an and.

If you surrender yourself to officers of the enemy you can probably expect good treatment. If you keep running and get captured by privates, you’re probably done.

Then the Chechnyan rebels should have been so treated, and not gassed—which gassing by the, killed a number of Russian citizens, including children.

Guess that's what happens when Russia supports Muslim terrorists. As noted in the thread already, didn't they have problems with such terrorists like from Afghanistan and Chechnya themselves?

Let the left in the USA take warning from all this. That is, if they'll ever take warning, since they're so dogged in their indoctrination . . .

The Geneva Convention only applies to the armed forces of signatory nations. I don’t see how it could apply to a bunch raving muslim militia men in the midst of a civil war.

Is the Geneva Convention a chapter in the Koran? If not, it doesn't exist in the peaceful religion world. What does the Geneva Convention say about be-headings and the cutting off of limbs?

I would imagine that the rebels are NOT signatories of the Geneva Convention, therefore are not bound by it. While I think he should have had a trial, these people didn’t have any obligation to go by the Geneva convention.;

That’s great, the country that killed 80 million (most of them through forced famine) of their own citizens in the 20th century are going to raise a stink about Kadaffy not getting due process.

Don't forget that after Libya booted us out, the Russians came in and gave them aid and built bases in the country even as Ghadafi started to purge his opposition.

Exactly my thoughts.

This is a civil war. The rebels can not be viewed as regular army. They are irregular militia with little if any formal training and an only loosely organized command structure.

The Geneva Convention can not apply to the Libyan rebels because strictly speaking they do not even have a country because they do not even have a government.

As soon as Gaddafi was captured, he and the Lockerbie bomber, should have been put on a plane for the US.

Then the plane should have been blown up over the Atlantic. A small bomb that would cause it to tumble down to the ocean.

Not necessary so. The rebel's "government" (National Transitional Council) was recognized by the U.S. (in Aug), the UN (in Sept) and others as the legitimate Libyan gov't.

They have as good a government as Somalia which is to say that a government that does not govern is not a government.
