October has been designated as Respect Life Month. As Pope Benedict XVI has so often reminded us, abortion is a violation of the social justice teaching of the Catholic Church — a lack of justice for the child who is killed; a lack of justice for the society deprived of that child’s contribution.
Here is a real story about a woman who respected life, and her choice made a difference in virtually every one of our lives:
In 1954, Joann Schiebel, a young, unmarried college student, discovered that she was pregnant. At the time, her options were very limited. She could have had an abortion — but the procedure was both dangerous and illegal.
She could have gotten married, but she wasn’t ready and did not want to interrupt her education. Thus, Joann chose instead to give birth to the baby and put him up for adoption. And so it was that in 1955, a California couple named Paul and Clara Jobs adopted a baby boy, born out of wedlock, that they named Steven.
Yes, this is the same Steve Jobs who died on Oct. 5 from pancreatic cancer. He was, as a reporter from the Washington Post commented, “The brilliant, material co-founder of Apple, who introduced simple, elegantly designed computers for people who were more interested in what technology could do rather than how it was done.”
If you have an iPhone or an iPad or an iPod, or anything remotely resembling these, you can thank Steve Jobs. If you have had an Apple or Macintosh computer in the past, you can thank Steve Jobs.
But at the same time, you can also thank Joann Schiebel for giving the gift of life

A good “moral absolutes” story for a change.
Excellent, thank you. We knew the story but did not have the personal names to give it a face.
She exercised her options. You can make decisions but after making them, you are going to have consequences.
The way you control outcome is to forsee what will happen with a given decision.
My wife was an unmarried high school girl when I first met her. We were married after she finished high school and she got pregnant two years later.
We raised our own kids, seven of them.
They are all productive and raising their own families.
The outcome was no accident.
You are very fortunate. But it was from God, not you. Don’t get proud or you could mess it up.
Thank goodness she didn’t kill her baby, whether or not he would have grown up to invent cool technology.
Was Steve Jobs a good person? That is the question in my mind. Obviously he wasn’t an ax murderer. But what did he do to assist widows and children? To advance Christ’s cause on earth? What side was he on?
The percentages of abortion to adoptions is staggering.
We need more adoptions.
BTW, my son and daughter in law just adopted a Ukranian Down Syndrome girl. They already have a Down Syndrome boy.

Imagine the amount of love in your son and daughter in law’s hearts to seek out and take on willingly this lifelong commitment. Your grandchildren are very blessed.
Wasn’t Beethoven in a similar situation? Oddly, I wonder if Jobs was himself a staunch abortion backer.
I agree. My wife and I were both active in Church and learned a lot from our parents and others.
We passed it on to our kids, and they are passing it on to their kids.
We have 28 Grandchildren.
I wish I could have been so lucky. God led me into marriage with a selfish person. The kids are great but the selfish one left and is in the far country.
