Iowa Rep. Steve King (left) and Texas Gov. Rick Perry (right), who is running for president, went pheasant hunting in Iowa Saturday.
MERRILL, Iowa -- Rick Perry often waxes eloquent about his wife Anita as the love of his life, but today in Iowa he disclosed to journalists another "long love affair" that has affected him since he was young.
With guns, that is.
"It was a long love affair with a boy and his gun, that turned into a man and his gun, that turned into a man and his son and his daugher and their guns," an orange-and-khaki-clad Perry said of his relationship with firearms before a pheasant hunting trip in northwestern Iowa.
Perry, who took questions from reporters before the shooting expedition with Iowa Rep. Steve King, called family hunting "part of America" and said that teaching children the safety and the mechanics of firearms is "one of the great American traditions."....

Rick Perry: We are fed up with being overtaxed and overregulated. We are tired of being told how much salt we can put on our food, what windows we can buy for our house, what kinds of cars we can drive, what kinds of guns we can own, what kinds of prayers we are allowed to say and where we can say them, what political speech we are allowed to use to elect candidates, what kind of energy we can use, what kind of food we can grow, what doctor we can see, and countless other restrictions on our right to live as we see fit.
I understand the sentiment and feel much the same way but with regard to language and nuance Perry is politically tone deaf. I so much wanted to like and get behind him too -In a way he’s been more of a disappointment than Sarah deciding not to run.
I hate all the candidates.
IF you'd rather NOT be pinged FReepmail me.
IF you'd like to be added FReepmail me. Thanks.
I hear you.
He apologized. Accept it and move on.
I’m moving on too - right into Cain’s camp after Perry’s debate where he called Conservative “heartless”.
It’s something that is too big for me to forget.
So this hunt was a political stunt. Fighures. Why invite press to go hunting with you. I despise this guy so much. The biggest fraud I have ever seen. Obama romney and Ricardo are the same.
So, who are you roooting for and pushing today? Don’t be bashful, come on, fess up.
Too pithy, sorry.
Please try again...LOL.

The pheasant hunt is an annual event honoring Col. Bud Day, a true American Patriot. Congressman Steve King organizes the event and invites who he wants to.
“Perry, who took questions from reporters before the shooting expedition with Iowa Rep. Steve King, called family hunting “part of America” and said that teaching children the safety and the mechanics of firearms is “one of the great American traditions.”....”
I don’t think I would have worded the above quite the same way, but, I agree with him. The safety and care of your firearm is important.
Can we still use a fishing pole ... WITH a hook.
You Go Girl, give them Hell..
No one said the Press had been invited. When people of this level show up in a small town the press (such as it is) usually show up invited or not.
Can you look at his entire body of work and some of his background?
Herman Cain thinks the 2nd Amendment is a states rights issue.
3%ers still pushing Pandering Perry ping
oh I’m betting you ain’t hatin Michele Bachman.. she was looking goooood at the last debate
Hell, the GOP, pundits, elite and many here on FR used the same tactics to bring Palin down, so lets get it on now for the others.
Who would do such a thing?
I'd hit it, but it would be a grudge **ck.
The Cain surge reminds me a lot of 2008 unfortunately. My ex was a democrat so I heard all about how the Obamabots bullied and shouted down all positive Hillary threads. It didn’t endear anyone to Obama.
Amen, Rick Perry. Well said. I feel the same way.
Rational people will begin to get offended.
The faithful anti-Perry posters show up like flies on honey.
They read a great statement such as Perry made above and flip it off.
They are sick, sick, sick.
I can’t wait for Cain to join up with Romney.
Maybe he should try having a long, long love affair with his wife. Last time we saw her, she wasn’t lookin’ too steady.
as a Cain supporter I’m sure nobody would fight harder to protect our 2nd ammendment rights than Gov. Perry and the difference between him and other candidates who pretend they are hunters is he isn’t pretending.. I love hunting too... good for him pheasant hunting in Iowa
“Last time we saw her, she wasnt lookin too steady.”
What does that even mean?
Well, yeah! Bo Derrick isn't running.
I await the day when MSNBC titles an article
“ Obama describes his long love affair with Reggie. “
When asked about today’s Iowa State match up
with Texas A&M Perry said
“I’m for the Aggies. I don’t get confused about who I’m for,” he declared to reporters.
“I’m not going to be one of those people who roll into Iowa
and say, ‘Oh I’m for the Cyclones,
because I’m runnin’ for office.
People see through that pretty good.”
See post #17. John French Kerry is a living stunt, the Annual Bud Day Pheasant Hunt is not.
John Kerry supports taxpayer funded subsidies for ILLEGAL aliens. So does Pandering Rick Perry.
I think 'rational people' will see that for what it is.
“I understand the sentiment and feel much the same way but with regard to language and nuance Perry is politically tone deaf. I so much wanted to like and get behind him too -In a way hes been more of a disappointment than Sarah deciding not to run.”
I talked to a conservative guy from the northeast today who expressed the exact same sentiment.
We call those liberals.
This wasn’t a photo op.
Perry hunts and shoots about as much as others play golf. It was opportunity for him to hunt pheasant(yumm)and I would have been shocked if he had turned it down.
I did a test and went to the latest Cain thread. I see no Perry supporters over there trying to shout it down.
If you don't want to pay to listen to the speeches, you can watch them from home live on C-SPAN from 6 to 9 p.m.
Candidates will each be asked two questions by the Faith and Freedom Coalition and two questions from the Iowa Energy Forum, an oil industry trade group.
4:30 6 p.m.: Registration, meet-and-greet, buffet dinner
6 p.m.: C-SPAN begins live coverage
6:33 6:45 p.m.: Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee
6:45 7:07: Herman Cain
7:07 7:29: Michele Bachmann
7:29 7:51: Rick Perry
7:51 8:13: Newt Gingrich
8:13 8:35: Ron Paul
8:35 8:57: Rick Santorum
His wife may want to tuck them away after the next series of polling comes out.
I had a revelation today of what is going on. I see very clearly now. Keep the faith. Perry is going to win, I have an inside source.
I love guns too, in the hands of bonafide American citizens. Unfortunately, that’s not quite the reality here in Rick Perryland where you can simultaneously be illegal to be here, be armed in a sanctuary city and have in state tuition waiting for you.
The good news is the constant effort to bash him can only mean they are worried...
