Mitt Romney is always quick to lambast other Republicans for being career politicians, as if this is his first rodeo and he is a political newcomer. However, the truth is hes been in politics for over seventeen years, many of which have been spent appealing to liberals and moderates and fighting to keep from being identified with Ronald Reagan.
Yet the more one goes back and listens to the things Romneys been saying during his nearly two decades of public service, the more one has to wonder why he thought someone would link him to Reagan in the first place.
....trying to unseat Senator Ted Kennedy in 1994, Romney said:
I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a U.S.Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years, that we should sustain and support it. And I sustain and support that law.
.......And on guns, Romney would be a disaster. For example, while trying to the secure the Republican nomination that eventually went to John McCain, Romney appeared on Meet the Press with Tim Russert and said:
I dont line up 100% with the NRA. I supported the assault weapon ban [as governor].
And he went on to explain that he supported the BradyLaw in its original form.
What Ive learned by listening to Romney is that you have to be aware of the fact that he thinks well enough on his feet to slip past troublesome topics and seize on others more favorable to his ambitions. This lets him get away with telling a few half-truths (or half-lies, depending on how you like to frame it).
For instance, when....

Not to defend Milt, but did Governor Romney allow illegal aliens in Massachusetts to pay the much lower in-state tuition rate at state universities and community colleges? If so, how did he justify giving them a better deal than US citizens from other states? Or, for that matter, allowing them to stay in the United States and attend college in the first place? Inquiring minds want to know....
With Mitt, I suspect there will be a third-party candidate somewhere down the line and it’ll turn into a comical 2012 November election.
Spin, Perrywinkles, spin...
Nope. Let’s not make the same mistake as CW in her drive by’s against anybody but Perry.
If you have any question about a statement you are going to make, just Google it first. Now the other question should be, did he ever support it?
“Not to defend Milt, but did Governor Romney allow illegal aliens in Massachusetts to pay the much lower in-state tuition rate at state universities and community colleges? On the issue of in-state tuition, as far as I can tell, Romney took no action as governor either way on this issue. Mass is one of a majority of states that has no laws prohibiting in-state tuition for illegals, but none specifically providing for it. Only 4 states in the country explicitly prohibit in-state tuition for illegals, and Mass is not one of them. Primary Source:
http://www.numbersusa.com/content/learn/dream-act/map-states-state-tuition-laws.html
Now if I were to guess, I would say Romney probably could have cared less about this issue until it became an achilles heal for Perry. Now suddenly it’s at the top of his list, yet he took no action as Mass governor to prohibit it, so his new-found passion for the issues seems a bit disingenuous to me.

VIDEO of Gov. Perry's speech:
Gov Rick Perry spoke to LaRaza about the drug cartels, shared responsibility of border security and that it is Washington's responsibility to secure the border -- that the Federal government should support the military, deliver the mail and secure the border -- and they aren't doing their job. [HE RECEIVED a lot of applause] He spoke of the money Texas spends securing the border, that it must be sealed and then we can sustain legitimate commerce...He told about protecting the sanctity of the vote and strengthening our shared values, family, faith hard work -- they are TEXAS values and we should unite as citizen's of one Nation under God and concentrate on what unites us. He told his Cuervo joke and they found it funny unlike the Liberal Latino Leaders Give Perry Lukewarm Response (or more likely they'd heard it before)
Why go to LaRaza in the first place? Will he accept an invitation from the Nation of Islam, Black Panthers, Stormfront, the Klan, Aryan Nation or CAIR?
The only GOP candidates that I've mentioned in this thread is lying Romney and my support for Gov. Perry.
I’m ready for it! If the other candidates can’t take him out - a 3rd party candidate would rip him to shreds because they would mean business. The gloves would be off and Mitt’s hair will be tousled for sure. He’ll be eating his wisea** comments like his remark to Cain - ‘Ok, so now I have apples and oranges in my basket’. I was hoping Cain would have comeback with ‘no, Mitt what YOU have in YOUR basket is nuts!’
Rick Perry answering a question about Al Gore:
"In 1988, you supported Al Gore's presidential campaign. Why?
In that group, he was by far the most conservative Democrat. But between Ronald Reagan and seeing what the Democrat Party was becoming, I came to the conclusion in 1989 that I needed to become a Republican.
Have you seen the film An Inconvenient Truth?
No, ma'am.
Have you read the book?
No. I generally don't watch or read a lot of fiction.
Many believe global warming caused the wildfires in your state. What do you think?
Historically in Texas, we've always had substantial periods of drought. World temperatures have also been changing for millennia. I truly believe the science is not settled on the issue of man-made global warming.
I find it interesting that you went to college to be a veterinarian.
And organic chemistry made a pilot out of me. [laughs] After 16 hours of organic chemistry, they pointed out to me that I probably didn't want to be a veterinarian.
So would it be fair to say that you and science don't get along so well?
No. After I graduated college, I had a year of the most technical aerodynamics and physics that you need to be an air force pilot. They weren't cream-puff studies. I have a pretty good handle on science from that perspective."....Source
Listen to Gov. Perry's speech.
Romney sounds like a habitual prevaricator - not unlike Slick Willy.
And the MSM isn't going to cover for Romney, like they have and will continue to do for Obama.
I don’t care if he gave the 21st Century version of the Gettysburg Address, you don’t validate racialists with your presence and the standing of your office.
It’s there so other FReepers can listen and come to their own conclusions.
There ya go again. Guilty conscience? My comment was driven by the plural sense as depicted by the “by’s” and any regular poster here knows that.
Have a wonderful Monday.
It seems like they are. He’s running behind Newt “Baggage” Gingrich and Wrong Paul in some polls. Yikes!
Didn’t Jim DeMint endorse Milt?
His counter proposal to in-state tuition was a total tuition waver for students who were the top 25% of MA grads. The legislature rejected that because it believed wealthier family's kids would benefit.
Had it passed, illegal aliens in that 25% could've had free ride at MA state colleges.
Romney didn't have any moral indignation about tuition breaks for illegal immigrant students, he just didn't want a specific benefit for them to be part of his record when he ran for POTUS.
That sounds exactly like the thinking of the guy who slipped up now and revealed his thinking with, I'm running for office, for Pete's sake, I can't have illegals," doesn't it?
No one should be fooled by Romney. He'll say anything.
Romney also was proud of the fact that he gave free health care to illegals with his Romneycare, and he thanked Obama for putting the same thing in Obamacare.
That is the fact and it is on tape for all to see.
Perry can’t even make it through a debate without a nap. He’s in no shape for the white house.
Well, at least Mitt was a Republican. . . . . . .
Romney is so bad he could make President "govern-by-polls" Clinton look like he had core values!
Sorry sweetie, you can’t re-write history.
Boy, oh boy. What a great endorsement at the time of the primary voting.
“Great leaders are born and good leaders keep working on it. We are not favored with an obvious great leader in the 2008 presidential race, as is apparent from the primary process and the results thus far.
But Mitt Romneys leadership credentials offer the best hope of a leader with substance, and the best hope for a good president who could turn out to be great.”
I see that as a vote for the best of the none of the above. Here is the link that contains the whole text of his comments. http://www.verumserum.com/?p=30490
The cat fight between Ysnkee Governor Good Hair and Southern Governor Good Hair is embarassing. They are like twin used car salesmen separated at birth.
Actually, this link is of the entire endorsement and his “pinch his nose”moment in doing so.

“slip past troublesome topics”
I dont line up 100% with the NRA. I supported the assault weapon ban [as governor]. What Mitt did when he signed the AB was to claim if he vetoed it, his veto would be overridden.
Another one is when he has stated in the debates, he signed a bill for local LE’s to enforce immigration laws. Fact is he signed this EO two days before “Coupe” Deval took office. Mitt knew Deval would rescind this EO
Care to elaborate?
Not sure about MA tuition, but he did give them free medical care in Romneycare.
Do you have ANY thing to add to this thread about Romney?
Or are you strictly anti-Perry?
Obama likes Mitt's advisers too:
Romneys Troubling Appointments (Mitt's environmental policy team now works for Obama) ."EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has taken most of the fire from Republicans as her agency rolls out a slew of controversial new climate and clean air rules. But McCarthy, the EPA assistant administrator of the Office of Air and Radiation, has taken on much of the heavy lifting of writing, structuring, and implementing the rules.
Lisas the coach and Ginas the quarterback in the work of rolling out new clean air regulations, said Daniel Weiss, an energy and climate policy expert at the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank with close ties to the Obama administration. Shes running the plays, improvising on the line.
Another Romney environmental adviser in the effort to regulate greenhouse gases is now Obamas Director of Science and Technology Policy, John Holdren. Dr. Holdren has some exotic views:
..
Don’t need to. You and every Cain, Bachmann and anything other than Perry supporter knows your tact. Just drop in a bomb, making very sure not to indict yourself, because you are just trying to enlighten us, make a comment or two defending yourself for doing it and then, gone! Just like your cubicle mate Clairity, who has quit responding to me because I laid out a challenge she could not address and I would not let go. Only when I used the “All” addressee to the list of my challenge, gone. Shall we venture down the same path?
Let me make something perfectly clear. Half truths and outright lies have no place in an intellectual discussion. I admire your commitment to your choice but for the sake of our ultimate goal of ousting Obama and his merry band of thieves, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth will only get us there. We will not defeat him if we are at each other’s throats.
With that said. I called out the tactics of Clairity as one of a divider using Alinski tactics disguised as a Freeper. Drive by’s are one of those tactics. She only posted negative articles about anyone but Perry and you have the same history, granted you provide clever cover by posting a few Good Perry articles, but the tact is essentially the same.
As a Native Texan, I was eager to see if Perry could walk the walk and he failed in the first and especially the second debates. The first was to defend his “declaration” that all parents subject their young daughters to an injection based on his buddy’s say so. Then the final cut came on his heartless statement. Even though my mother was married to my father during the European occupation, once bearing two children she still had to prove herself worthy to become a citizen of this country. My father’s career in the military was hampered because she grew up in Nazi Germany but did not attend one day’s of Hitlers Youth camps and her father spent the entire war in a coal mining labor camp because of it. They lived their lives on the run and hiding for its duration as well.
Then when he comes out and call me heartless because I feel it is necessary for anyone else to abide by the same rules and standards shot himself right in the arsche!
So, I’m all in favor of you supporting your candidate, but that support falls short when your agenda is to just tear anyone else’s down. If there are any skeletons in the closet for any of them, trust me the media will make sure we all know.
You want a case in point? Ok, her is one. I know you have made comments about Cain endorsing Romney in ‘08. So chew on this example a while in reading all of his comments about that endorsement and get back to us as to why that was a negative then.

Gov. Perry did well by evoking an assault from Romney,
by simply demonstrating that Romney is duplicitous
and disingenuous.
Gov Perry - 1 Romney the Magic RINO - 0
I have mentioned NO one on this thread other than Romney and Perry.
I post “a few Good Perry articles”...... You believe this is some sort of cover, for what?
Vetting other candidates (as my “few Good Perry articles” were vetted quite consistently and rabidly) is not allowed?
Posting a thread where a candidate’s comments are posted for vetting is not allowed?
I am hitting Romney and YOU seem to want to hit me because I support Perry.
Good grief!
"As U.S. real output grew 13 percent between 2002 and 2006, Massachusetts trailed at 9 percent.
* Manufacturing employment fell 7 percent nationwide those years, but sank 14 percent under Romney, placing Massachusetts 48th among the states.
* Between fall 2003 and autumn 2006, U.S. job growth averaged 5.4 percent, nearly three times Massachusetts' anemic 1.9 percent pace.
* While 8 million Americans over age 16 found work between 2002 and 2006, the number of employed Massachusetts residents actually declined by 8,500 during those years.
"Massachusetts was the only state to have failed to post any gain in its pool of employed residents," professors Sum and McLaughlin concluded.
In an April 2003 meeting with the Massachusetts congressional delegation in Washington, Romney failed to endorse President Bush's $726 billion tax-cut proposal."
[Cato Institute annual Fiscal Policy Report Card - America's Governors, 2004.]
The Massachusetts Republican Party died last Tuesday.
The cause of death: failed leadership.
The party is survived by a few leftover legislators
and a handful of county officials and grassroots activists
who have been ignored for years.
Services will be public and a mass exodus of taxpayers will follow.
In lieu of flowers, send messages to Republican voters
warning them about a certain presidential candidate named Romney.
- Boston Herald, 11/12/2006
"In 2006, while Romney was chairman of the National Republican
Governors Association - a group dedicated to electing more
Republican governors - his own hand-picked Republican successor
as governor lost badly to the Democrat, despite the fact that Republicans
have held the governorship in Massachusetts since 1990. Romney largely
ignored the Massachusetts elections and spent most of the time
during the campaign out of state building his presidential campaign.
He came back and publicly campaigned for the Republican candidate
the day before the general election!
Locally, this is a rebuke to Mitt Romney and checking out within six months
after being elected and having accomplished almost nothing,
[Jim] Rappaport [former chairman of the state Republican Party]."
- Boston Globe, 11/8/2006
"Governor Mitt Romney, who touts his conservative credentials to out-of-state Republicans,
has passed over GOP lawyers for three-quarters of the 36 judicial vacancies he has faced,
instead tapping registered Democrats or independents -- including two gay lawyers who
have supported expanded same-sex rights, a Globe review of the nominations has found.
Of the 36 people Romney named to be judges or clerk magistrates, 23 are either registered Democrats
or unenrolled voters who have made multiple contributions to Democratic politicians
or who voted in Democratic primaries, state and local records show.
In all, he has nominated nine registered Republicans, 13 unenrolled voters,
and 14 registered Democrats."

Romney Rewards one of the State's Leading Anti-Marriage Attorneys by Making him a Judge
Romney told the U.S. Senate on June 22, 2004, that the "real threat to the States is not the
constitutional amendment process, in which the states participate,
but activist judges who disregard the law and redefine marriage . . ."
Romney sounds tough but yet he had no qualms advancing the legal career of one
of the leading anti-marriage attorneys. He nominated Stephen Abany to a District Court.
Abany has been a key player in the Massachusetts Lesbian and Gay Bar Association which,
in its own words, is "dedicated to ensuring that the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision
on marriage equality is upheld, and that any anti-gay amendment or legislation is defeated."
- U.S. Senate testimony by Gov. Mitt Romney, 6/22/2004 P>
"Romney announces he won't fill judicial vacancies before term ends
Despite his rhetoric about judicial activism, Romney announced that
he won't fill all the remaining vacancies during his term - but instead
leave them for his liberal Democrat successor!
Governor Mitt Romney pledged yesterday not to make a flurry of lame-duck
judicial appointments in the final days of his administration . . . David Yas,
editor of Lawyers Weekly, said Romney is "bucking tradition" by resisting the urge to
fill all remaining judgeships. "It is a tradition for governors to use that power to appoint judges
aggressively in the waning moments of their administration," Yas said.
He added that Romney has been criticized for failing to make judicial appointments.
"The legal community has consistently criticized him for not filling open seats quickly enough
and being a little too painstaking in the process and being dismissive of the input of the
Judicial Nominating Commission," Yas said.

For example, while trying to the secure the Republican nomination that eventually went to John McCain, Romney...
While Romney will be far better than the Destroyer we have in office now, and I would not hesitate to vote for him when the Establishment GOP will nominate him for us, we must always keep in mind that when Romney ran three years ago - he lost to the Progressive tomato can* McCain. IOW, McCain was considered to be a better candidate than Romney to run against Barry Soetoro.
Exactly.
And that is why the media (Fox included) is helping Mitt hit Perry.
Mitt is a flawed candidate and they need to prop him up. They believe that Obama is so weak Mitt can pull it off.
I don’t agree.
Romney CANNOT WIN.
Deval Patrick is the proof.
IF YOU WANT, REALLY WANT, OBAMA FOR ANOTHER 5 YEARS,
THEN BY ALL MEANS GO FOR MITT-THE POLITICAL CROSSDRESSER.
The Applause O’Meter is not good enough reason to vote for Perry.
LOL-you have the Greatest sense of humor in making your Points!
I really enjoy your posts!
