One of seven oil companies charged with killing migratory birds during drilling operations in North Dakota has agreed to plead guilty and pay $12,000.

Slawson Exploration Co. Inc., of Wichita, Kan., was charged under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act with for killing 12 birds that died after allegedly landing in oil waste pits in western North Dakota from May 6 through June 20. Under a plea agreement filed in federal court Monday, Slawson will pay $12,000 — or $1,000 per bird — to the nonprofit National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

The maximum penalty for each misdemeanor charge under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act is six months in prison and a $15,000 fine.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon said he could not comment on plea deal because it still must be approved by U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland in Bismarck. Stu Kowalski, an attorney for Slawson, also declined to comment.

Meanwhile, the thousands of wind turbines kill by some estimates a million birds a year.

Yes...that’s true. But, don’t you see, they are “green”. Also, cat-loving greenies allow their cats to roam who also kill many songbirds.

Why doesn’t the money go to the families of the dead birds? Why does some Liberal organization get to keep it all?

I aggressively chase those cats out of my yard, throwing small objects. I chased one all the way home once, 2-3 houses down. I think the owner was really startled when I rang the door and requested she keep better control of her pet, that I didn’t appreciate it being in my yard stalking wildlife.

This is a boatload of BS, but it does set a precedent for the Birdlovers to sue the windmillers.

Ridiculous....Nothing about birds having pea brains???

I always laugh because they put a retention pond in an "elite" area of town...and birds now come by the 100's. Their driveways and lawns are covered with feces.

They hired dogs to scare them off and put up fences and they still have feces all over the damn place. Too funny because the area was in a Wetland originally and the pond was a part of the mitigation policy.

I’d send these dead birds to Obama—so he can use them for a Migratory Bird fund raiser dinner. 35k a plate.

Every winter for the past 20 years we have fed the Chickadees, Nuthatches, Hairy Woodpeckers & Goldfinches etc. from our dozen feeders.

Not this year, though. Black sunflower seeds have nearly doubled in price since last year from $18.00 to over $30.00 per 50 lb. bag. We normally go through 6-8 bags, not counting the suet bars.

I guess we’ll be guilty of murdering these poor little creatures in order to buy pellets for our own selfish desire to keep our house warm.

This green movement BS has really gotten out of hand.

12 frigging birds? It is so petty and ridiculus. It's a good example of how wrong headed and petty these U.S. Depts have become...

Why is any portion of a legal fine going to any organization that wasn’t harmed by this so called offense? Once again the govt is taking money at gun point and giving it to their butt buddies.

Killing birds with waste ponds = evil fossil fuels
Killing birds with wind turbines = good green energy

If the oil companies were smart they’d hire a couple of kids to go down there twice a day and scoop the dead birds out of the pond and bury them, problem solved!
