Of all the departments of our federal government, the most pointless and unconstitutional is the Department of Education. Since it was created back in 1976, test scores have shown no substantial improvements compared to all the money we are spending. If we are looking for ways to cut back our budget and the debt itself, one of the first places we should look is the Department of Education.
The Department of Education's budget has increased over 300% from when it was first established. With this significant increase, one would logically think that test scores of American students would be increasing all around America! Unfortunately, this isn't the case. Even if we go back to when the Department of Education was started in 1979, we still don't see any significant increase in test scores in the US, let alone compared to the rest of the world. It's sad that so much taxpayer dollars is going into a system that really isn't making our children more educated to compete in a world market.

If our Constitution really meant something the federal Department of Education would never have come into existence...but it doesn’t, so it did.
We only need the Department of Defense, Justice, Treasury, and State. ALL of the rest need to be unfunded, shut down, and erased from existence.
Yes that’s number 2 on my list. Return edu back to the States.
Number 1 ofcourse is the EPA.
It depends on what test scores you look at. If we tested them on knowledge of gay marriage, alternative sexual lifestyles, and the value of diversity in all its non-productive forms, I'll bet scores would be way up. It's only if you look at marketable skills that our Department of Education is a catastrophic failure.
Nothing the Dept. of Education does that can’t be done by the states...
...same song for environment, energy, agriculture, etc., etc., etc.
Who would've thought it was Carter that started this boondoggle?
I am for that and a few others.
Now, legal plunder can be committed in an infinite number of ways. Thus we have an infinite number of plans for organizing it: tariffs, protection, benefits, subsidies, encouragements, progressive taxation, PUBLIC SCHOOLS, guaranteed jobs, guaranteed profits, minimum wages, a right to relief, a right to the tools of labor, free credit, and so on, and so on. All these plans as a whole with their common aim of legal plunder constitute socialism.
Now, since under this definition socialism is a body of doctrine, what attack can be made against it other than a war of doctrine? If you find this socialistic doctrine to be false, absurd, and evil, then refute it. And the more false, the more absurd, and the more evil it is, the easier it will be to refute. Above all, if you wish to be strong, begin by rooting out every particle of socialism that may have crept into your legislation. This will be no light task.

Actually, the Dept of Education is also 100% redundant. It already IS being done by all 50 states, plus DC. The federal program simply has the largest budget, and parcels out just enough to keep the states dependent. If the states don't "voluntarily" follow the federal edicts, then they stand to lose about 7-12% of their budgets... And school budgets seem to be pretty strained as it is. No state will willingly let go of another ~10%.
In all of my years of teaching, I saw the federal logo on a few forms and brochures... And little else. As far as I know, they've never helped educate a single child at all.
One of my all-time "favorite" political quotes: when asked what we are getting for all of the billions that we funnel through the Dept of Education, the reporter was told "so that the children know we care". Yeah. THAT'S worth $40 billion per year. Sure!
Stop the federal funding to commie locales, and privatize it completely.
Most of these departments were NOT created to improve ANYTHING! They were created to increase the size of government, to increase the number of featherbedding bureaucrats, and to exponentially increase the number of guaranteed votes for anyone campaigning on promises to continue and/or increase the government largesse!
The Deptartment of Justice?? We certainly don't need it in it's present form. It needs to be a department that oversees ONLY laws pertaining to the enumerated powers of the federal government which are : maintain the security of our nation. ALL remaining issues should be handled by the individual states. I am heartened by the recent dialog about the intent of the framers being that, the Judicial branch of government be the weaker of the 3 branches. It is time that the Legislative branch regain it's power over the Judicial branch and stop the madness coming from liberal activist judges all over this country. They should not have the final say in matters that affect everyone in this country, but should provide non-binding guidance for the Legislative branch. This was the intent of the framers and had we not gotten away from it, we would not be in this mess that we are in now.
Get rid of it. Good idea. Followed closely by the Dept of Energy, DHS, and HUD.
Return edu the parents.
That is the only way to bring quality back.
States are just as much about indoctrination as the Fed is,in fact worse because of the corporatist and NGO money sponsoring vile anti-American curriculum.
If the Federal Constitution meant anything The Federal Income tax rates would be 1% or less. Not because the Federal Government doesn’t have the power to tax more, but because her Authorized functions under the Constitution are so limited that she really doesn’t have a legitimate need to tax much more.
Most of what the Federal goverment now does was never authorized or even envisioned by the radifiers.
Well-stated. I agree 100%
