On 11 October Typhoon aircraft of Number 6 Squadron maintaining the Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) mission at RAF Leuchars were launched to intercept two aircraft in the NATO Air Policing Area that could not be identified by any other means i.e. the aircraft is not talking to civilian or military Air Traffic Control, has not filed a flight plan and is not transmitting a recognisable secondary surveillance radar code.

I have no problem with the Russians doing this, just so long we're doing the same thing to them.

They probably heard them coming from about 200 miles out.

“”Those old Bears have to be getting along in age””

I had my husband come in and look at that picture. He tracked those in the AF from an isolated radar station in Iceland in the ‘50’s. Said, “Yep, looks familiar all right.”

Thanks for posting.

The Tu-95's NK-12 turboprop was very, very noisy, thanks to the large diameter of the propellers spinning at high speeds, and with the propeller tips exceeding the speed of sound while spinning at full speed.

I'm surprised that the Russians didn't seriously look at replacing the two four-blade contra-rotating propellers with two six-blade units with a more modern propeller blade design, which would have allowed for slower propeller speeds and combined with the modern shape, would have drastically reduced the propeller noise generated and also reduced fuel consumption.

Those old bears tracked us while our ship was on the way to Viet Nam in 1972.

I don’t think it is a good idea anymore, not after Sept 11. Someone might get an itchy trigger finger after about the tenth time.

Kind of a nostalgia trip.

You might want to do some research into how recently Tupolev was churning out Tu-95s.

I was aware the Rooskies built this airplane for many years into the age of jets.
