BP won approval from the Interior Department to drill its first exploratory oil well in the Gulf of Mexico since the blowout of its Macondo well a year and a half ago touched off the countrys worst offshore environmental disaster.
The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said that BP met more stringent safety requirements devised by the federal government in the aftermath of the disaster. The company also planned to follow even tougher voluntary standards that exceeded the governments rules.
This permit was approved only after thorough well design, blowout preventer, and containment capability reviews, said bureau director Michael R. Bromwich.
At more than 6,000 feet, the proposed well would be in deeper water than the Macondo well. It is part of the companys Kaskida prospect located in an area called the Keathley canyon about 250 miles south of Lafayette, La. The company submitted the application to drill in January.

Too bad the Interior Department and other government agencies don’t have to meet the same standards and scrutiny as private enterprise. They’d all be out of business if that was the case.
Just a few federal agencies do more damage to our country and its citizens each and every day than BP ever did..
I hear ya on that one, first thing that crossed my mind too.
And it only cost them 20 billion.
Hope they bring a cork
Go deeper, what IDIOTS, go on land and get the shale oil, go to Alaska.
IDIOTS. The deeper the riskier. Obami WANTS another accident.
They don’t deserve it.
They have caused the whole industry to suffer because of their bungling. It is now nearly impossible to get a permit and if you do you have jumped through innumerable useless hoops. There are so many rules and so much paper work and useless forms to complete and records to keep there is hardly time to pay any attention to operations.
Exploratory, huh? Same chance of accident, no chance of producing.
Win win for obastard.
My thoughts exactly! Obama and his Democrat Party have been paid off.
I bet Ken Salazar is getting a 20,000 sq ft vacation home in the Caribbean on an island owned by BP for this.
