Rights activists and protesters paraded through Cairos streets on Friday bearing the coffin of a young man they said had been tortured to death in a maximum security prison, calling his treatment evidence that abuses are continuing at the hands of security forces more than nine months after Egypts revolution.
Essam Atta, 24, was killed Thursday after he was caught with a cellphone, relatives said. They said one of his cellmates had told them guards inserted hoses into Attas mouth and anus and forced in water and soap, causing vomiting and bleeding.
Protesters likened the alleged incident to the abuses, including corruption and the widespread use of torture, that pushed Egyptians to revolt this winter against President Hosni Mubarak.
Comparisons were drawn between Atta and Khaled Said, a young man who was beaten to death by police in the port city of Alexandria last year. Pictures of Saids bloodied body were posted online and became a driving force behind the uprising. Now a picture of Attas corpse is circulating on social networking sites, and activists are calling for an investigation.

Wait until the kind campassionate sharia law takes effect and women stoned, raped, physically and mentally abused, children are sacrificed in honor killings, lopping heads, and torture Thats when the party begins, all brought to you by the Arab spring and the American DEMOCRATIC PARTY the radical activists such as code pink and others. Are we having fun yet? Deliberate instability has it’s rewards
Disgusting, of course. But over being “caught with a cellphone?” Maybe he was recording a video of the police or army—even in the relatively civil USA, that’s unpopular with the recordees.
You're right. The professional sadists at the prisons sit around waiting for a victim they can work on, and he was unfortunate enough to be that guy... and non-Muslim to boot.
This is quite a contrast from "torture" defined in the USA as putting panties on the head for which our soldiers are still in prison. In contrast the perps responsible for Atta's atrocities will walk.
Well, they [Egypt] just got their omelett. Tunsina and Libya are getting theirs and our time is coming.
Arab men just can’t stay away from each other’s butts, can they?
...calling his treatment evidence that abuses are continuing at the hands of security forces more than nine months after Egypt's revolutionThis agitation will go on until Egypt's gov't really does fall to Islamofascists who want to abrogate the treaty with Israel.
