Salt Lake City Council makes vehicle idling longer than 2 minutes illegal

SALT LAKE CITY — Motorists who leave their vehicles idling for more than two minutes in Utah's capital city run the risk of being fined.

The Salt Lake City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve an ordinance making idling of vehicle engines a crime punishable by a fine of between $50 and $210, depending on the number of offenses and how quickly fines are paid.

The goal, city leaders said, is to improve air quality in the Salt Lake Valley, where more than 50 percent of air pollution comes from vehicle exhaust.

"Anything we can do to reduce pollution on an individual basis contributes to what we need to do on a valley-wide basis," Councilman Stan Penfold said.

The ordinance includes plans for a public awareness campaign and a six-month grace period to make sure Salt Lake City residents and visitors are aware of the new law and its purpose before any fines are issued.

First-time offenders of the ordinance will be let off with a warning.

"Our primary goal is to educate as opposed to enforce," Councilman Carlton Christensen said.

Will Huntsman take credit for this piece of crap too? Guess these folks are still living in 1970 because since cars started coming with fuel injection, the computers are very adept at handling the changes in exhaust gases.

Don’t these people have other things to do instead of putting shackles on the people?

They were kind enough to include exemptions when the temperature is 32 degrees or below, or when it is 90 degrees or above.

So if it’s 34 degrees, they can turn on their motor for 2 minutes, then turn it off, then back on, then off, then back on... I’m going to buy stock in companies that make Starters.

City cops idling in the shade while thay make a few calls on the city's dime, oh, and the air on full.

Train crossings, red lights, absurdity on parade.

'Course, if idling is bad, then stands to reason actual driving, which creates even mnore exhaust, is not too far behind as a target.

The logical end result of ALL lib/dem rules and regs is total disaster and failure.

I am sure there will be tons of city street workers sitting in nice toasty warm truck cabs on the job site this winter.

where more than 50 percent of air pollution comes from vehicle exhaust

Does this cover such vehicles as railroad engines and airplanes, The railroad engines have limited emissions controls and there current are none for jet engines. Both of these vehicles idle for longer then 2 minutes daily in the course of their duties.

It is estimated that On-Road Mobile sources – cars, trucks, buses, and other vehicles licensed for highway travel, generate 37% of Nox while Non-Road Mobile sources – aircraft, ground support equipment, construction equipment, farm equipment, boats, locomotives, and lawn and garden equipment, generate 19% of Nox emissions.
