New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and several other states dont have reciprocity arrangements that allow someone like Todd to pay an armed courtesy call. Thats because New York officials can deny concealed-carry permits on a case-by-case basis, whereas many other states South Dakota, for example dont put much stock in such scrutiny.
H.R. 822, now in the House Judiciary Committee, makes a mockery of our diverse values and strategies for public safety. If it were enacted, off to New York the South Dakotan tourist could go, 9-millimeter Glock in tow.
Thats not liberty. More like lunacy.

Go figure.
The "lunacy" would be why does someone who lives in SD even want to go to NYC? Perhaps the perps in NYC would be more respectful of out-of-towners?
When he’s in New York working for the NY Times, I’ll bet Frank Bruni stays out of parts of Harlem, Brooklyn, and the South Bronx. Let somebody else be mugged and shot with an illegal weapon, the only kind most New Yorkers are allowed to carry.
A 9mm? Pretty light...Noo Yawk would be .45 territory, imho.
I’m sure he can get a permit with his political views and connections to City Hall.
Most New Yorkers will never be able to pack heat because Bloomberg thinks only the elites deserve self-protection.
They want power concentrated in reporters, lawyers and politicians, not individuals.
Heaven forbid we should allow the little people to protect themselves while traveling from one state to another.
Exactly.
Bruni is a liar. In New York City, the permitting system is hopelessly corrupt. If you don’t have political connections, financial clout or aren’t a celebrity, don’t bother to apply.
That’s the way its been there for a century.
He was up in arms the first time this was posted, too.

Federal and state law enforcement officials can already carry concealed nationwide, regardless of local law. Liberals just don’t want the little people to have the same right cops do!
I don’t know which is more astonishing: A Lib having a 10 Amendment epiphany, or the idea that someone from South Dakota would ever want to visit NYC.
We live in strange times.
Of course, the New Yorkers probably did prefer those nicely appointed, cultured British troops occupying their fair city throughout much of the Revolutionary War anyway, rather than Washington’s surrounding riffraff. Sad day for them, I suppose, when the Brits sailed away.

You posted it in General Chat. Sorry I didn’t see it come up when I searched for it.
but they want universal exception for fagot marriage...
"....Named for its primary legislative sponsor, state senator Timothy Sullivan, a notoriously corrupt Tammany Hall politician, it dates to 1911, and is still in force, making it one of the older existing gun control laws in the United States..."
The main motive for the law was to keep guns out of the hands of a rising immigrant and black population.
Now its used by the elite to keep the rif-raff from competing with their exclusive monopoly on gun ownership in New York City.
Of course Bruni would expect the Constitution’s ‘full faith and credit’ provision to apply to gay marriage.
I wonder why.
Situation Ethics. Carte Blanche for liberals to do anything at anytime. And always be right.
Situation ethics means there is no requirement to be consistent in your beliefs. Right for me is wrong for you. Wrong today is right tomorrow.
I suggest that concealed carry rights are granted in the federal constitution, by the Privileges and Immunities clause. States have no rights to deny Privileges and Immunities granted by other states.
Concealed carry is a privilege granted by your state, right?
I would look forward to seeing a SCOTUS case seeking redress: federal denial of the ability of another state to deny your CCW privilege.
In one state, you’re a law abiding citizen, but cross the wrong state line and you become an automatic criminal.
I suppose they got over it while NY was our nation’s capital.
what do you think of a 38?
Given the necessity to go about unarmed, I would rather be unarmed in North Dakota than New York.
Of course they do. The worst offenders are hypocrites and its OK for them to protect themselves and their families but they want to deny you doing it for you and yours.
I’ve never felt the need to carry a gun in my rural neck of the woods. That’s different in the urban jungle.
Let’s just take some joy in the fact that a deceasing percentage of folks read the NYT, and even fewer actually take to heart what they read.
The MSM is losing, and they don’t like it.
And for me, I don’t give a smelly Obama what a journalist thinks about guns. As if this clown knew which end the bullet came out of.
And liberty is not having obtain a permit to carry open or concealed, much less having to obtain a permit to own a gun. (Four states have it right, only 53 to go. ;-)
What a @$$clown !
Liberals favor uniform federal laws only if it restricts liberty. For example, speed limits (gone for now), seatbelt laws, helmet laws (gone for now), prohibition like more draconian DUI and drinking age laws. Anything that favors individual liberty is out !
Yhea, They're animals up (I'm in KY:) there...
out here in "the sticks"; We just gotta worry 'bout bears, Varmints (rabid 'coons / 'possums) & the occasional HVAC copper wire thieves.
Ky Gun Control: proper stance / good eye / S&W Handgun
500 Cal Magnum / double tap. (short version :)
The three people who still read the new york times are really agitated.
Carl Rowan (used ILLEGAL handgun to shoot at “children”).
Which state, per capita, has a lower crime rate?
Dems were NOT 'reluctant' to cross the NRA - that's a lie. A typical New York Times lie. The reason dems didn't take on gun control WAS BECAUSE THE ISSUE DOESN'T WORK FOR THEM. The polls changed some years back - - dems discovered they LOST voters over the issue - and dropped it like a hot potato...
Amazing that Liberals are so up in arms over law-abiding citizens exercising their 2d Amendment rights.
LOL! Raspberry was a “black lefty Washington columnist.” :^)
Did some research and you’re right, it was Carl Rowan—another black lefty Washington columnist—not William Raspberry who had the unregistered gun.
The original reasoning behind gun control, both in England and America, was a fear of a Communist uprising. You disarm the populace and the government has less to fear, which was demonstrated when the people rose up and threw out the Czar...then were disarmed by the Communists who took control.
Governments fear an armed populace..as well they should!
Turning non-discrimination and equal protection of the law into the the naivete of flyover-country rubes -- in one sentence. J-school really instills some skills, you betcha.
Maybe .46! ;-)
Not to speak of all the liberal politicians and Hollywood stars who have armed guards with them wherever they go.

Frank Bruni, food critic - New York Times
May 2011, he became the first openly gay Op-Ed columnist of The New York Times.
Bruni wrote in Men’s Vogue of his search for a workout to combat the calories he consumes as a food writer, and in the April 2008 issue he wrote about his addiction to sleeping pills.
Talking about gun control with friends in cab, I hear cab driver announce, “I’m carrying a loaded gun.” tinyurl.com/6x8u59l

I love “related stories” tabs. Was reading about Christie on Daily Beast. “Related” was “Weather Man Found with Dead Man in Tub.”
Interesting, important, troubling NYT story about how disempowered and alienated voters worldwide feel, http://t.co/Bb3lVErO

Really? Lawmakers raffle off a Glock in state where Giffords shot? Speechless. http://t.co/miScU80

When I was younger there were occasionally packs of feral dogs that roamed the rural area where I cared for my grandmothers property. So I would open carry when working outside.
Now recently I have found bear tracks on my property and this is only semi-rural. We also have coyote in the area.
I dont so much fear the feral two legged animals here so much but I think it may be reasonably cautious to go armed to protect myself from the 4 legged variety.
For the Lefties it is the same thing.
For those on the Left if you vote pro-gun you are an NRA member or sympathetic with the NRA. For them it is black and white.
Pro-gun=NRA
Pro-gun control=reasonable and logical
The Left does not believe in personal protection. For them no one should have to protect themselves if we just get the guns off the streets nobody will need to protect themselves. They believe that the State has a total monopoly on lethal force at all times; Individuals must always defer to the state the use of arms.
For the Left individuals going about armed is an invitation to chaos and the old West depicted in spaghetti Westerns.
