Republican presidential frontrunner Herman Cain got a tongue lashing on Sunday from CBS Face the Nation moderator Bob Schieffer over a much-publicized Cain campaign ad showing Cains chief of staff, Mark Block, taking a drag from a cigarette.
In a rare editorial opinion during the interview, Schieffer accused the former Godfathers CEO of allowing his campaign to send a signal that its cool to smoke.
Let me just tell you, its not funny to me, Schieffer told Cain. I am a cancer survivor, like you. I had cancer thats smoking-related. I dont think its serves the country well and this an editorial opinion here to be showing someone smoking a cigarette. And youre the front runner now.
Schieffer added: And it seems to me as front runner you would have a responsibility of not to take that kind of a tone. I would suggest that perhaps as the front runner, you would want to raise the level of the campaign.
Cain responded that, We will do that Bob, and I do respect your objection to the ad. And probably about 30 percent of the feedback was very similar to yours. It was not intended to offend anyone and being a cancer survivor myself, I am sensitive to that sort of thing.
The online ad went viral last week on the Internet and on cable TV for being unorthodox. The ad shows Block taking a smoke from a cigarette after asking voters to get involved in the campaign.

Brilliant Guerilla Marketing move on Cain’s part. He’s gotten MILLIONS of dollars of free advertising from that silly little ad all for the miniscule cost of producing the ad and placing it on the internet.
I bet the media would have really given FDR and Churchill heck too for their smoking habits. Oh yeah, Double down on that bet.. Schieffer , retire already, your last connection to reality was severed long ago.
Does not Dear Leader smoke a pac a day? Where’s the outrage, Bob?
Cain doesn’t smoke. Barry does, but you don’t hear any complains from the liberal media.
Also, polls show that about 30% of the population are zombies. So that makes sense.
What CBS et.al. are missing is that, smokers or not, the majority of us Great Unwashed are more offended by the painful, painstaking, Political Correctness that we are daily bombarded with, than we would ever be by the sight of a person smoking a cigarette....
The real outrage is rich 75 yr old Bob hogging that high paying job slot instead of retiring and letting a 99 percenter with 100 grand in student loans get a good paycheck.
Wouldn’t you LOVE to see somebody ask him that?
LOL. CUE the pictures of the arrogant litle Won smoking.
Old Sarge, spot on! I believe Republicans need to challenge the liberal media every chance they get. For instance Cain could have said something like, “There you go again Bob with your selective liberal indignation. You have never expressed outrage in the fact that our current president smokes. So shut the hell up!”
CBS is always licking or “lashing” somebody with their tongues. Usually, they lick the ‘RATS while “lashing” the Republicans. Go Herman and Mark! Brilliant move!
Well, Bob, if smoking is so bad, why isn't it outlawed?...Hint: tax revenue.
He just landed millions in tobacco money from the Carolinas and Virginia.
3 states Obama won in 2008 and states where tobacco is major income and jobs to thousands.
Oh, great. That’s gonna give me nightmares.
I’m starting to think Obama is the real target of Cain’s ‘smoking’ ad. Afaik, none of the GOP candidates are smokers. Obama is. Sooner or later this fact will be front and center. Cain won’t rush it. The timing will be right.
And the PC loonies are out of the gate. Go F yourself Bob.
It's all good.
After all of this, I’m waiting for the eight balls in the state run “media” to come out with a “poll” this week that says Cain “only has a 5% name recognition among the voters”. LOL!
The Ad to me just shows pure defiance and cunning to the MSM and the GOP establishment. It shows moxie. Bob is going the way of Olbermann.
First they raised the price so high you couldn’t afford to buy them at the corner store anymore, so I started getting my cigarettes online and having them delivered by mail right to my door.
Then they decided to ban the sale of cigarettes online but NOT little cigars. So I switched to little cigars...which are actually less expensive.
THEN, in a move I am sure was designed to help the US Postal Service, they banned ALL tobacco products from being sent through the mail.
Fedex is much faster anyway.
Meanwhile Schieffer has no effing problem with 40 million young souls aborted from this earth’s existence for the sake of a woman’s right to “choose” (misnomer). Yet he castigates Cain because someone is exercising his own individual right to actually “choose”.
I forgot who said “...first, kill all the lawyers”...but he was off in profession. The very first traitors that should be dispensed with are journolists, news readers and ‘news’ program directors. Then, Politicians, then the lawyers.
We all know the ad is not about smoking. It’s all about freedom and all the PC crap we deal with everyday.
What I want to know is why in these interviews Cain doesn’t state its obvious anti-PC message and just says its Block being Block ? I want him to defend this in your face ad to the liberal-fascists.
“Political correctness does not legislate tolerance; it only organizes hatred.” Jacques Barzun
Tony Soprano and his goombahs can fill all your tobacco needs for less than they charge in the stores.
He can probably supply incandescent lightbulbs, Freon, top-loading washing machines and phosphate dishwashing detergent as well.
Hmmmm, maybe I could become the next Al Capone if I invent and market a phosphate additive to dishwashing and laundry detergents...
ROTFLMAOPIMP!!! It's going to take a looooong time to get the smell of pure 100% bullsh*t out of the Daily Caller offices after Pappas dumped that load.
Funny how nothing ever changes.
I also hear tell the corner bartender can hook you up with Christopher Moltisanti, who has a sideline ripping old 3.5 gallon toilets and shower heads out of foreclosed houses...
But there Bob is, being a liberal and a Democrat on TV, sending a message that it’s cool to be a liberal Democrat despite the fact that millions have had their lives, liberties, and property stolen by liberal Democrats.
I’m outraged at the message you’re sending, Bob. Have you no shame?
I think that Schieffer missed one of the major points of the ad. First, many are still talking about it. Second, the government interference and take over of personal responsibility is, to me, the major point of the ad.
Everybody knows that smoking is detrimental to your health, and is a cancer risk. But it is smokers who light up and put the cigarette or cigar into their mouths; they have the responsibility to make that (bad) decision. They do not need to be ostracized for their bad habits. Let us all get the government out of our lives; it is overkill for those who decide to smoke.
“Does not Dear Leader smoke a pac a day? Wheres the outrage, Bob?”
Waiting for the video of brave bob dressing down dear leader.....
You can buy phosphate at any Home Depot....or Walmart even Add a tablespoon full to your dishwsher and voila! Good for your laundry too.
Ding, ding, ding - we have a thread winnah!
You try to muscle in on my phosphate turf and you could have a real bad accident, pal.
He did say that. FNC (I don’t recall which host)
I used to order cigs online, until they banned it. I didn’t know they could be Fed Ex’d!
Thanks for the heads up!!
Well, Cain DID forget to say “Bless your heart.”
You almost have to wonder if the Government works overtime to CREATE black markets.
Finnish aka Electra-Sol has phosphates. You will have to off them first.
I turned the channel when the slapping began. I have no stomach for lefties like Schieffer lecturing anyone.
But Dear Leader is not smoking on TV, excuse me, internet. LOL! He was stunned and Herman just sat there with that little smile.
Now, if MSM would start taking issue with THIS ad (and play it endless times...)
