Natasha Nimer had a simple question: As a trustee in a local labor union representing City of Phoenix employees, did she have a duty to check the books of a taxpayer-funded insurance account it managed?
So she asked the executive board of AFSCME Local 2960. The response was an emphatic “no.”
She dropped the matter and thought it would end there.
She was wrong.
In the months that followed, union officials tried to strip Nimer of her duties as a trustee and steward. They tried twice to force her out of AFSCME, only to have the international headquarters order her reinstated.
Eventually union executives went after Nimer’s job as a civilian employee in the Phoenix Fire Department. They demanded her city phone records, personal and work-related emails, disciplinary files and performance evaluations; even a list of all of the Web sites she had visited. They wanted her computers seized and the hard drives searched for evidence she was doing something wrong.
The mafia should sue the unions for stealing their ideas and methods but I’m not sure there’s a line of demarcation between the two to begin with.
I would suggest that AFSCME 2960 is up to its neck in something very dirty.

Where there’s smoke there’s fire. A federal grand jury needs to question these union officials and audit all their financial records.
I remember asking a harmless question of my manager when I worked in downtown Seattle. I bicycle commuted through some pretty tough territory and thought about getting a glock and a matching fanny pack. But where to put it when I got to work.
So I asked my boss if there was anywhere I could store a gun at work, explaining the situation. He not only said “no”, but said he was very troubled that I would even ask such a question.

Almost made me want to shoot him in the kneecap right there, but I held off seeing as I was unarmed at the time. :-D

Prolly was a company policy, and some companies do this to avoid liability or perceived liability. But in your case there was a looie-liberal boss on top of it. What, you should defend yourself according to state law from toughs whilst in travel? He should at least be glad that you respected company policy enough to inquire how to do it right, if it’s possible to do it right.
How did NAACP find skin off its nose in this one? I mean I’m glad it did, because political correctnessly speaking the race card still trumps the union card, but I don’t quite understand how the NAACP got the race card in play.
unions are Obama’s Storm Troopers and in the past three years their power and influence has been growing by leaps and bounds.
Yeah, he was a typical seattle lib professional. He was disturbed that I was “the type of person that would even consider owning a gun”.
He’s the type of guy that would stand there in shock as gangs came at him and were not interested in a word he said as they beat and rob him. No clue. He was a real milquetoast. I felt bad for him at first, but it was a real passive-agressive thing.
The woman the union was attacking was black. As you said, race trumped union power this time.

Where does the union get off “demanding” that the city turn over its records to them? Who the hell is the employer here?
public “service” unions are out of control.
I tried for 6 months to track down how SEIU handles their pension plans and only discovered that their are two plans.
One for rank and file which is way under funded.
The other one is for the 100 top execs at SEIU which is way over funded.
Money is funneled through a bank in New Orleans.
Beyond that, it was almost impossible to get info.
I would support this woman in a six-figure civil suit.
The RICO statutes may also apply, but that's up to the citizens of Phoenix.
As a trustee, it absolutely IS her right and responsibility to check it.
Many if not most unions are run about the same way as many if not most corporations.
In the interests of the top executives, not customers, union members or shareholders.
Unions are a great deal more opaque to public scrutiny than publicly-held corporations, though, especially because most media people are a lot less interested in investigating wrongdoing. There is a default position, for some obscure reason, that unions are the good guys.
Thus since everything belongs to them, having anyone question their ownership is tantamount to stealing from their pockets.
