A U.S. Army specialist has been arrested at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska on suspicion of espionage, an Army spokesman said on Tuesday.

Specialist William Colton Millay, a 22-year-old military policeman, was taken into custody on October 28, Army spokesman Lt. Col. Bill Coppernoll told Reuters.

Coppernoll said Millay, of Owensboro, Kentucky, was arrested following a joint espionage investigation conducted by the FBI and Army Counterintelligence special agents.

Hmmm. Doesn’t say who he was spying for, but the base was in Alaska and they’ve been conducting a round-up of Russian spies lately...

The base seems to be mainly air power and defense, directed toward Asia, and Russia in particular.

I’d also say that the likeliest people he’d be spying for would be the Russians.

These days it isn’t just the superpower enemies. Besides organizations like AQ, there is even espionage by corporations looking to capitalize on events or needs. It will be interesting to find out. Alaska has a lot of testing ranges for DARPA.

Actually, as I recall from a briefing I attended back in my old Navy days, most such “traitors for hire” tend to be mid level enlisted males, E-4 to E-7, Caucasian, late twenties to early 40s, technical specialists or working around a lot of tech that gives them access — and oddly enough — science fiction fans.

I joked with my coworkers that I should probably turn myself in just to be on the safe side.

Home to a well-known SIGINT site. MPs assigned to the facility would have high-level clearances. However, I would think their access to actual product would be extremely limited. Unless he was working with somebody.

“Alaska-based military policeman gets 16 years for selling secrets to Russian agent”
Published April 16, 2013
Associated Press

SNIPPET: “An Alaska-based military policeman will serve 16 years in prison and will be dishonorably discharged for selling military secrets to a Russian agent, who was an undercover FBI agent, a military panel decided Monday.

A panel of eight military members from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage recommended a 19-year sentence for Spec. William Colton Millay, but that was dropped to 16 years because of a pretrial agreement. He will receive credit for the 535 days he’s been jailed since his Oct. 28, 2011, arrest. The panel also reduced him in rank to private and he will forfeit all pay and allowances.”
