Cain on China: “They’re trying to develop nuclear capability”
HotAir ^

Posted on 11/01/2011 7:37:08 PM PDT by Def Conservative

The phrasing’s slightly ambiguous so it becomes a rorschach test on Cain. If you like him and trust that he has a grasp on policy, you’ll think he’s referring here to developing nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The Pentagon’s chief worry right now is China building any sort of carrier, not necessarily a nuclear one, so this would be an odd bit of specificity from Cain. But fair enough — a Chinese nuclear carrier would indeed be a big deal. If you don’t like him and/or don’t trust him on policy, you’ll think he’s referring here to China developing a general nuclear capability, i.e. nuclear weapons. Which, as pretty much everyone in the world except maybe him knows, they’ve already had for decades. The way the sentence is phrased, with the two parts separated by “and,” it sounds like he’s distinguishing the nuclear component conceptually from the carriers. Could a guy who didn’t know what the “right of return” was and who whiffed on the biggest softball question ever about Gitmo really not know that China has a nuclear deterrent? I’m thinking … maybe. Although it won’t be spun that way tomorrow, needless to say.

Obviously he’s referring to First Strike capability.

If he knows China’s GNP and growth rate (which I doubt more than 1% of Americans know), then he obviously knows that they have a limited nuclear capability.

The author set up a false dichotomy.

I like and trust Cain.

However, I don't think he has a CLUE on foreign affairs.

Therefore I question his fitness to serve.

He should have said that.

I guess he was joking again

“He should have said that. I guess he was joking again”

He just figures that people are intelligent enough to know what he means.

...but maybe that’s his mistake.

I don’t have any doubt that he’ll do fine in foreign affairs. First, he understands Muslims to the point of not even wanting them in his cabinet. Second, he’s for a real fence on the border, with teeth. Third, he understands Israel and will NOT throw them under the bus.

Much better than Obama or Bush-43, for that matter. Nothing to worry about with him.

The Pentagon’s chief worry right now is China building any sort of carrier

Most of the Pentagon is thrilled that they're sinking money into carriers that could go into submarines or missiles.

The Chinese carrier is intended for intimidation/use against Vietnam, India, etc.

They can't possibly defend it now, or any time in the next couple of decades, against the US (or Japan.)

I think he’s talking about CVNs, or nuclear carriers. I could be wrong. Cain is not the most well versed candidate.

Ridiculous.

I remember when Palin was receiving this sort of treatment.

For the very same reason. Liking Cain more, every single post I’m reading, and every “news” mention I see.

How’s that “flak ... over the target” thing go?

If the pentagon is “thrilled” China is about to become a naval superpower rival, they need to find another job.

Yawn. The Palin treatment redux. The establishment does this to anyone who is a threat to them.

Even if you're right about his grasp of foreign affairs, and I'm not sure you are, you're better off with a person who believes in the right things and values the right things and can learn the issues, than a person who knows the issues in a factual sense, but believes collectivism works.

First, he understands Muslims to the point of not even wanting them in his cabinet.

It's an explicitly unconstitutional religious test.

Second, he’s for a real fence on the border, with teeth.

Except for where he claimed he was joking about it, backed off the real fence, with teeth, and has talked up electronic assets and virtual fencing.

Cain's not thought through his policies, not thought through the issues, not thought through his messaging.

At this point, voters interesting vetting candidates and not anointing them would be foolish not to ask themselves whether Cain is truly serious and studying the issues or if he's just going to wing it. The one-on-one with debate Newt will be a key test.

9-9-9 looked like a plan from a serious candidate with serious ideas but even the messaging and responsiveness on that plan has been mishandled and there's still considerable confusion. The web version needs rewriting. Cain's taken the "they haven't read the plan" approach to critics which is a mistake. I like 9-9-9 but if I can do better answering critics than the candidate, there's serious problems in that campaign. I felt the same with Perry.

I’m not worried about this either. Cain has a solid foreign policy team:

The LSM cannot stop talking about Cain. They are looking for any excuse to write anything about him. He is a huge trender on all social media and the LSM sites are getting massive traffic from even the weak feeble articles and blogs they are posting. Cain is a goldmine to this guys.

“It’s an explicitly unconstitutional religious test.”

If you believe that, you’re worse than the ACLU and the way they’ve wrecked education in this country.

“Except for where he claimed he was joking about it, backed off the real fence, with teeth, and has talked up electronic assets and virtual fencing.”

Fine, he played with them. The thing that his supporters understand is that he says what’s on his mind first - and if it turns into a media eruption, he plays with it. So, yes, he DEFINITELY is for securing the border and making life difficult for Illegals, rather than CODDLING Illegals, like a certain governor has made a career out of.

I agree with you. Nice guy, not an appropriate candidate for president.
