House GOP to subpoena immigration data
The Washington Times ^ | Tuesday, November 1, 2011 | Stephen Dinan

House Republicans are moving to subpoena a list of all immigrants whom the Obama administration has flagged under its secure communities program but failed to arrest for deportation, after the Homeland Security Department missed a congressionally imposed deadline to produce the information this week.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, Texas Republican, said he wants the data so he can see who is among the 300,000 people the administration has deemed too low a priority to detain under new deportation guidelines. He has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday for the immigration subcommittee to vote to authorize the subpoena.

“Why would DHS want to keep this information from the committee?” Mr. Smith will say at the meeting, according to an advance copy of his statement. “If there is nothing to hide, why wouldn’t they provide Congress with these documents? Are administration officials concerned that the requested information will show that illegal and criminal immigrants intentionally released by ICE have gone on to commit more crimes?”

He first requested the information in August, and last week set an Oct. 31 deadline for turning it over. He said Homeland Security initially seemed prepared to cooperate, but the request became mired in recent weeks and this week he said the department told him some of the data belong to the FBI and can’t be turned over without that agency’s consent.

***

While the Homeland Security Department has set records for total deportations, it has shifted its emphasis away from rank-and-file illegal immigrants and toward those with serious criminal records or repeat immigration-law violators.

***

As a result of the shift, though, illegal immigrants who are working or going to school in the U.S. and not running afoul of other criminal laws are under less of a threat of deportation.

Lamar Smith, Never mind WHO is among the 300,000 aliens that Obama deems too low a priority to deport. I am pissed that there even ARE 300,000 aliens our feds KNOW about but are NOT being deported! That represents either
  A) 300,000 jobs that unemployed citizens could be doing, OR
  B) 300,000 welfare parasites draining the American taxpayer, OR
  C) some combination of A and B.

So we are encouraging illegals to take jobs from citizens. The real irony here is that now that we are educating illegals they will soon be able to take jobs from those that don't see the problem with people coming in illegally to work. Open border supporters have jobs that they think are safe from illegals, will be funny to hear them scream when illegals are taking their jobs.

Lamar Smith is a RIAA/MPAA whore. He introduced DMCA and the proposed e-PARASITE Act - which will be used against FreeRepublic.

Don't let his posturing on immigration fool you: it's "the last refuge of a Republican scoundrel".

It’s the Dems who don’t want to deport anyone. That, and they can’t get their lawyers to work hard enough.

And then, DHS and ICE keep losing even the ones they might deport.

I'll take "C", Alex...these are the workers hired by homebuilders, etc. that get a check AND cost of living sustenance.

Some in both parties like the system just how it is.

Sounds like a "jobs" bill waiting to be passed to me.

It is. I've seen stories of such-and-such plant raided by ICE, followed by stories a week later of x number of jobs opening up and 20x people showing up to apply.

....but instead are sitting in city parks around the country, whining for a government hand-out, because they think they are too good to do the work that the illegals are doing.
